Open thread: CNET Download.com wish list

by peterbutler CNET staff - 9/25/07 12:04 PM

A library of Linux applications? Screencast demos from publishers? The ability to queue up multiple downloads? Your own blog on your Download.com profile page? A user-based tagging system?

Whatever is on your wish list for CNET Download.com, tell us about it here. We'll update you on whether or not your feature requests are planned in the near future, or give you an idea about whether such a feature would be feasible for us to implement.

Rather than open this thread up to any random complaints y'all might have, let's restrict it to new features that you'd like to see included on the site. We'll leave the complaints for another day. ;)

Cheers,
Peter

Put link to publisher back on the software discription page.

by wil_w_s - 9/25/07 4:55 PM In reply to: Open thread: CNET Download.com wish list by peterbutler CNET staff

I would like to see the link to the publisher/author put back on the software description page. It was there a couple years ago then it was moved to the list of the authors/publishers other software page. It saves a few clicks and I miss it.

Another wish for the site

I have one more simple request. Can you list more than ten titles per page or have the option to list 10,25, 50, 100 titles? Thanks.

Put link to publisher back on the software discription page.

by WheelerCub CNET staff - 2/19/08 1:55 PM In reply to: Put link to publisher back on the software discription page. by wil_w_s

I agree but I also think it would be much more helpful to include all the publisher information on the product description pages to the right of the software product details. An additional link can be provided in the publisher area for "More software and info from PublisherName".

Even thier web site is buggie apearently. I am willing to listen to/read any suggestions at this point. My family is tired of listening to me curse.

What are you asking for?

by BrianZachary - 9/29/07 9:21 PM In reply to: A list of alternative software providers by lindaabc

I don't think this is the correct forum for this question, but I will help you as best as I can. This forum is about help and suggestions for this site itself.

I'm not exactly sure I'm getting what you are asking for. Do you want a list of Windows software that doesn't come from Microsoft? There are a few Windows downloads at Download.com, but all Windows programs are created by Microsoft.

If you are asking for an alternative download website, I doubt anyone here will tell you, since they want you to use Download.com. Anyway, I don't know of any site better than Download.com for downloads myself.

If you want to try an alternative operating system instead of Windows, you could try a different one. I just discovered one the other day called Ubuntu that is Linux based. It's easy to install and use, it's free and you can download it right at Download.com. Here is the link:

http://www.download.com/Ubuntu-Desktop/3000-2098_4-10689104.html?tag=lst-0-1

If none of this answers your question, please repost and be more specific about what exactly you are looking for. It might also help if you post on the correct forum as you may get a better answer there from others who can help better on that subject.

I don't think you understood

by lindaabc - 9/30/07 2:00 AM In reply to: What are you asking for? by BrianZachary

This is suposed to be a wish forum... isn't it? My wish was for something better than Microsoft. That's why I asked for a list of alternative software. Don't call it a wish forum if we can't do things like that. Maybe you should rename the forum.

There are alternatives...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 9/30/07 7:18 AM In reply to: A list of alternative software providers by lindaabc

The way I'm reading your question, you're looking for a comprehensive list of every developer/author that isn't Microsoft. However, that would be unreadably long as there are tens of thousands of alternatives. Take for instance download.com's software selection. Out of the software available on download.com, Microsoft is the publisher of 'just' 1,950 applications whereas there are over 53,738 Windows-compatible applications to choose from. With under 4% of them being from Microsoft it's easiest to just search for key words or browse by category to choose the alternative you want. That is a far less tedious process than examining a list of developers and attempting to determine which ones may be able to help you. And as Brian said, if you want to ditch Microsoft entirely you can switch to a competing operating system, such as Ubuntu, which is free.

More People Who Do Not Understand

by lindaabc - 9/30/07 7:33 AM In reply to: There are alternatives... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

All I asked was for a list of other free downloads that are simmilar products as Microsoft Internet Explore or MSN. It could be limited to ten for all I care! What is with you people that you have to be upset? This is labeled as an Open Wish forum. NOT!!!!! I think you guys should relable it. It is anything but a wish forum. All you have done is complain about my wish... instead of helping!

We're not upset...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 9/30/07 7:46 AM In reply to: More People Who Do Not Understand by lindaabc

We're just trying to help. In your first post you wrote that you were looking for "a list of alternative software providers," which refers to companies and individuals who write software, not the programs themselves. You also went on to say you wanted to avoid "Microsoft and MSM," which is a company and a brand name (actually MSN)...you never mentioned Internet Explorer so it was assumed you wished to avoid Microsoft in its entirety, not just replace a specific program. Sorry for the confusion, but the missing details truly were critical.

As alternatives to Internet Explorer you can check out Firefox, Opera, Netscape, and Safari, all of which are free and top competitors to Microsoft's IE. They can take a little getting used to as each has a unique interface, but give each one a little time and you shouldn't be disappointed. You can download them and others by clicking here for download.com's Browser section. You can also ask questions about the browsers by clicking here for the Browsers forum.

Hope this helps,
John

Sorry

by lindaabc - 9/30/07 8:02 AM In reply to: We're not upset... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

Sorry... I thought it was clear when I mentiones MSN. That is what I usualy brouse with. (I never did like Internet Explorer.) I said (and this is copied)"Every time I try to contact them lately over problems with MSM, all I get is can not connect to the site messages. " I did mention MSM, which is technicaly used to brouse with. I realize there must be many many such brousers but all I asked for was a list. It doesn't have to be all of them. You people put out lists on programs all the time. It could have say... the top ten..... and I would have been happy.

reply to: Sorry

by mountain_racer - 9/30/07 9:18 AM In reply to: Sorry by lindaabc

First, a FYI, MSN stands for Micro-Soft-Network. Which includes a number of programs like your MSN browser. Which in reality is just a modified version Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The confusion comes from the fact that there are other more commonly used programs from MSN like the MSN Messenger. So the initial confusion came from your comments about Microsoft and MSN and the implication that you seem to think they are separate companies.

Secondly, you have also implied that there is no list of browsers from alternative software companies anywhere on CNet's web site. When someone very nicely and politely (John.Wilkinson)embedded links to the lists locations you completely ignored them! Or maybe you just forgot to say thank you.

Thirdly, you get annoyed at people who have tried to point out the fact that you failed the most egregious of tests on any forum. You failed to properly search for that which you request prior to posting. That you will find will most often get you nothing more than more burning flaming responses than any political or religious comments you might never consider posting.

So thanks to John.Wilkinson for his very helpful post. My advice to you, lindaabc, is to always search before you ask. Because, more often than not, on a website with .01% of the information available here on CNet, someone has asked a question similar to yours at some point in time in the past. There are answers to your questions, just take a look - using the search function first.

This forum is for suggestions not bickering and reply backs

by wil_w_s - 9/30/07 10:07 AM In reply to: reply to: Sorry by mountain_racer

If you have a valid suggestion please list it. Some of us subscribe to this thread to hear some new ideas for download.com not to hear people tell each other they are stupid. If some one posts something you don't agree with don't reply back to tell them they suck. This forum is going be huge and none of it will be what it is intended for if every one does that. Thanks

Thanks everyone and so sorry for the missunderstanding

by lindaabc - 10/1/07 10:55 AM In reply to: This forum is for suggestions not bickering and reply backs by wil_w_s

I would like to apologize for seeming unstable in my previous posts and for forgetting to say thank you for the help with the link. I have had trouble with brousing, even through links. My computer seems to hate me. Every few minutes it freezes, even tho I have done every conceivable quick fix a non techie can do. I now have it in the repair shop, and have Mozila Foxfire on it, which I found through the link. The reason I had asked for a list to be given was because I am legaly blind, and have trouble hashing through reams of programs that are available for download. It helps to have a list that I can quickly search, or a link as was provided. Also, I am older then the average user. I never had the benefit of learning about computers in school, or how to properly search for what I need to know using CNET. I just take wild guesses as to what to type in when doing a search. If you do not know what type of program to look for, or are uncertain, it can be difficult and frustrating to find it.(Especially for older people like me) So once again please forgive me for not being clear in what I requested.

I think I got it

by BrianZachary - 9/30/07 10:05 AM In reply to: Sorry by lindaabc

You are using the MSN Explorer browser instead of IE. I used that one myself for a long time and I liked it, especially how it kept my favorites, no matter which computer I set MSN Explorer on, my favorites were there like magic. The problem with using that is having to sign in every time I wanted to use it, and that's after the long tedious ritual of setting it up in the first place. I don't remember exactly when or why, but eventually I stopped using it, probably because it stopped working correctly and I got tired of trying.

Like others have said, there are a whole bunch of other browsers to choose and there are lists if you do a search. A few have already been given here. Personally, I have been using Avant Browser for awhile and have no complaints with that, so check these all out and see what suits you.
