I just built my own system for the first time ever and I'm having some issues. The computer is working wonderfully except for when I hit the render button in 3DS Max. About 75% of the way thru, it shuts down. It does this every time. I've applied the silver compound on the processor and I've got multiple fans. I can't figure out what the problem could be. I would really appreciate some insight.
I've got an Intel Core 2 Quad Processor, ASUS Motherboard, 2GB Ram, Ultra 550 Watt Power Supply, and EVGA 8600GT 512MB Video Card. Thanks.
Some have too many fans but try the simplest test. No cover.

you can also use 4 concurrent super pi instances: http://www.xtremesystems.com/pi/
you didn't mention what specific mobo/chipset but you'll need to find temp/fan monitoring software (preferably one that logs to a file) so you can see what temps your cpu is reaching and what rpm your fans are spinning to.
if your cooler uses the standard lga-775 push-and-twist pins, make sure it's mounted properly. no wiggling should be tolerated.
Try this to monitor your computer's vitals:
