My gateway 7426gx (http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/7000Series/4651sp3.shtml)laptop keeps shutting off on its own. I've already used a can of air duster on the vents and opened up the computer and dusted off the heat sink, etc. I also have a laptop cooler. It seems to only shut off when the laptop is plugged in. (Doesnt usually shut off running on just the battery.) I do not have the original ac adapter, could that make a difference?
Is the replacement AC brick the same voltage?
Try a tool I use. http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html is on my Athlon 64 laptop and I have it set on the DYNAMIC speed setting. This way the CPU slows down and makes less heat when possible.
These Athlon 64's are hot CPUs so we need all the tricks to keep it cool. On some older units (over 1 year) I have to refresh the CPU heatsink compound. How old is this unit?

The computer itself, I bought on ebay from someone who said it was refurbished last year. (september) This year, around january I had to replace the the ac adapter because it wasnt working (This was the original adapter, it said gateway on it and everything) Both adapters are 90 watts, but I dont know about any of the other specifications. (The amps, voltage, etc.) I made the stupid mistake of throwing away the original plug after recieving this one. Will that program work with windows vista? (I dual boot windows xp professional and vista business now, using vista most of the time)
That's what I compare.
I'd try the program on XP (of course) to get the CPU to throttle down when possible.
As to Vista it has it's own CPU speed control so I wonder how you set it up. While I bet there is a problem with the laptop you can avoid a trip to a repair counter by running the CPU at the lower clock rates.

Where would I find out how I have vistas cpu control set up? (Administrative tools?, if so which one?)
No offense but try google on the simpler items.

i got vista to slow down the processor (around 1600 mhz) but with that program you told me about for xp doesnt. I have it set on battery optimization setting, and its still at 2400mhz.
Sorry it didn't work for your laptop. Usually this means the XP OS was not installed by the factory and whoever installed it forgot or can't find motherboard or other drivers.
Without such speed stepping (dynamic or other) the CPU could run at full tilt which in some laptops can't be handled due to poor designs or failing heatsink interfaces (that heatsink compound issue).
You're close those and good to read you have it under control in the OS you use the most.

I did get it working by installing the driver for my processor (the one that came with my system). My processor is now at 800 mhz, but is there a way to make it 1600 mhz? (without setting the program to the dynamic)
What you can do varies with each laptop but even at 800MHz my R3000 Athlon 64 laptop seems to run along just fine even when playing a dvd or compiling apps.
