Ubuntu Linux

by Jadoo27 - 9/14/07 11:53 PM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Been using the last release about 5 months and shall change to the next in October.
With Windows becoming bloat ware and process hungry and not to mention other facets best left alone.
One does notice the elegance of Linux as u sink deeper. And YES it does make a difference - people have this funny idea u need to be a geek to use Linux - well i did try in 2000 Red Hat and fell flat on my face but since 2 years back have been having fun with Ubuntu and Windows is - well sort of history now. no need to use 2 gb ram to use Aero - U can do Aero with Beryl in 8 mb ram - just check out you-tube vids 4 ur self. google for: ubuntu beryl
cheers

Linux (Gentoo and Mandriva) - 7, 3 and 2 years

by JLP - 9/15/07 1:42 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have 3 computers at home, all now running Linux operating system. On one system, which is my personal server, I have Gentoo Linux installed for about 7 years now, without re-formating. But even if I didn't format it I have changed the motherboard and processor one time and even a hard disk. And yet all software is very up to date.
My other computers (laptop and a desktop) are now running Mandriva Linux (laptop is using 2007 Spring, on desktop I'm testing 2008 RC1). Laptop for about 2 years now and the desktop for about 3 years. I also didn't need any reformat on these two. Just the normal upgrade to the new version of Mandriva Linux when it comes out.

How old is your operating system's current installation?

by pchts - 9/15/07 2:07 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

To start, I'd never concider installing a new OS to an already corrupt computer! I'd rather buy a new computer with a new OS installed. This way I'd get up to date equipment. Having said that, I got a new laptop in the past month with the new Vista Premium, I must be missing something. I don't understand what all the hoopla is all about. I don't or haven't seen much difference from my old laptop with Windows XP and this system. Am I not using the computer to it's maxium potential, somedays it runs slower than an old dog on a cold day! I attribute that to my wireless network and the house. Don't you just love it when you get an new computer with a new OS and "NO" manual to explain the difference between Vista and lets say ME or 98?

Mine is Mac OS X

by highway61 - 9/15/07 2:20 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been running the same install on my Dual G5 2g system for over 5 years know. It has received all the updates and such. It is still running strong.

On my XP Home Laptop, the OS has had to be reloaded a couple of times. On my Pentium D Dell XP has run pretty well. It has had a number of meltdowns but never so bad that I had to reinstall the OS. Sure is a big improvement from Previous MS OS'es :-) Well Win2k was pretty nice. I still like it better than XP.

Vista, hell no!

by Flirkann - 9/15/07 5:21 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My current install is less than a year old, but recovering from a fatal mobo failure will do that.
I've been running XP Pro from just before SP2 release, and rate the probability of moving to Vista somewhere between never to when hell freezes. If I have to change, Linux will likely be the go.

Windows Vista home premium

by rcraig3 - 9/15/07 5:27 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is the worst operating system I have worked with and I'm no computer geek. I've had nothing but trouble with the windows mail sticking in the out box or in box and can't get it deleted unless I pay Geek Squad to remove it. It is so slow running, I've had to wait minutes for the mail to even pop up. I've had XP and no trouble for about 2 years. Everyone I've talked to hates this Vista as much as I do. I'm self taught on the computer so don't have all the answers.

Vista Ultimate for one month.

by Ron Geiken - 9/15/07 7:05 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Vista is a lot more annoying than any other operating system that I have had, and yet I still like using it since I have a quad processor with 4 gig of ram that likely overcomes most of the major Vista problems. I have programs that I use every day, and I have to verify that I actually start it by clicking on an OK button. Seems like after a few weeks of using a program that Vista would check that it would be OK to launch without verification. I suspect that a lot of people will disable the verification program after a while, since it is really overkill on their part. I guess Vista is the Windows operating system of the future, so will just grin and bear it.

Actually most of the programs seem to work fine, and in fact I have some 16 bit programs from the past that I can also use. They give me some "gobble de ****" when they shut down, but they seem to work fine. I am still looking for a decent address book, since the one that I have had since the mid 90s doesn't seem to work very well under Vista.

Office 2007 is a super program, but the learning curve for it to use it to it's full capabilities will be years. I love the 2007 version of Word and Excel, and Power Point was thrown in for good measure.

If Microsoft finds some way to "smooth" over the program verification thing, it will make the O/S much more enjoyable to use. Compatibility of most of my programs has been very good. I tunes 7.4.1 still seems to have an incompatibility problem with the Vista Color Scheme

Linux Mint Cassandra

by brf50b - 9/15/07 8:02 AM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My computer has Linux Mint Cassandra installed about 5 months ago. I dual-boot with Windows XP (installed about two years ago) which I hardly ever use. My wife's machine uses Windows XP installed about 3 years ago. The Windows machine works fine; my Linux machine will be updated within a couple of months (new distribution coming) because it is so quick and easy!

How old is your operating system's current installation?

by leonsoles - 9/15/07 3:17 PM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Hewlett Packard Kayak that I bought as a re-conditioned computer in 2002, It's operating service is Win98SE. It is still working great for an old O.S.

In January of 2007 I bought a Dell Dimension 8100 from a relative. It's O.S. is WinXP with service pack 2. It was bought new in late 2005, but hardly used when I got it. I had to rid the system of a couple of viruses that careless web surfing by the previous owners had caused it to pick up. Also restored quite a few gigabytes of storage by getting rid of junk that Dell puts on new computers.

Both computers are still working fine.

6 Years old Windows 2000 Server

by brupub - 9/15/07 3:43 PM In reply to: How old is your operating system's current installation? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I need Terminal Services and would have upgraded to 2003 Server if I could find all of my necessary drivers. WinDrivers etcetera haven't found what I need.
