Not at ALL!!

by tycarg - 9/8/07 8:35 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are many reasons to not allow them as there are many out there in cell phone land that are rude and uncaring. Let us not forget that these cell phones can also be used by terrorists as a detonator of explosives.

Yes! Have all forgotten September 11, 2001?

by dyslip - 9/8/07 8:47 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Cellphones were the major reason the passangers on Flight 93 knew about the terrorist attacks and fought back. They used their cellphones on board never mind FAA rulings. Did the plane fall out of the sky because of cellphone interference? No! But we know their stories and their heroism because many used their cellphones to reach out to family and authorities.

Also, if cellphones were legal, the bearded lady in the next seat would still be talking, but now she would be talking to someone else not me! I've got my foam earplugs ready. Bring 'em on, just make sure their in meeting mode.

Airplane Cell Use

by kenroman - 9/9/07 11:08 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Not a big fan of all the disturbance it will create; however, there are already phones available if people are willing to pay the premium and with current cheap cell plans there would be no disincentive. If people would limit it to necessary use it would work, but that would never happen. Ever watch people on the freeway these days when they are bored and especially the natural instinct of women to communicate. Do we need to go back to smoking or nonsmoking, ie cell or no cell seating w/sound partition- good grief. If it were not currently cloaked in a "safety" issue there would probably have already been freedom of speech law suits.

No for voice communication, yes for texting, email, etc.

by k9alliance - 9/10/07 12:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think my subject line is an ample answer. It allows for communication with no more annoyance to anyone beyond the current level. If any type of voice communication becomes acceptable- AT ALL, We'll need "phone police" on planes!

Much like the "10 items or less" line in the grocery store... too many people either don't count their items, or don't really care about being polite to others. The apparent justification in the store is: "Oh, only 11 items, that's just one more than 10..." this time, the next time it's 12, then 15 and so on. Just like the "limit lines" in the grocery store-- if you let people make any calls at all, they will surely abuse the privilege.

So... my vote is for no calls-- period.

Absolutely not!

by redlfnt - 9/10/07 6:39 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Airlines don't allow smoking on flights for the same reason they shouldn't allow cell phones. Nobody should be forced to be a part of someone else's bad habits! 99.99% of the cell phone conversations that I've been forced to listen to in line at the sandwhich counter or grocery store were not important enough that they couldn't wait until the person got home or at least in their car.

Sure?

In a plane, people are often bored and in fact, would just now have time to say hello to a friend they haven't spoken to for a while. Why not use that "useless" time for some kind words?

Post 203 of 250

yes - but

Please don't annoy each other - only use the buzzer! Don't chat for hours, but, maybe the price will do the trick!

... just imagine if highjackers could use their phones to stay in contact ... or influence the engines or the board computer ...

Cell phones don't annoy people.... People annoy people

by mpmacal - 9/12/07 4:52 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Alas... A vast number of folk have no manners or common sense. I would love to vote yes, but the sad fact is crass, unthinking, selfish people force my vote to no.
Example: Last night I was dining out, and the table next to mine had two twenty-something ladies. The phone RANNGGG - a loud pop tune that made most surrounding folk jump.
...then it started. A full half hour of cackling like teenagers. One handed the phone to the other, then leaned in, yelling over the one who held the phone. The manager finally had to come over and ask them to move to the lounge if they "needed" to use the phone. It is a good example because fact is, they didn't NEED to use the phone. They WANTED to use it, in total disregard for their surroundings.
There is something about the phone that make people behave as if they are home alone. Unlike PDAs, laptops, and even handheld video games, the phone makes some folk forget that others are victim to their yelling, cackling, and high volume ring tones. They either don't know, or don't care.... so neither do I. I vote NO!

Yes...only in a separate cubicle for the purpose

by vbhisey - 9/13/07 9:37 PM In reply to: Cell phones don't annoy people.... People annoy people by mpmacal

A soundproof place the size of a loo (and maybe next to one). That too on payment... of maybe a buck per minute. Pay before you can get out. This I believe will address everybody's concerns. If you need to use it badly enough, pay up and not disturb anyone else. Also, all alerts (including calls) should be set on silent or vibrate only.

No, HELL NO!!!

by jgvillan - 9/14/07 12:10 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I know there is much discussion about can cells is used on planes or not. Also taking in the things about with 9/11 and so on. Sure, that was unique, one hell of an emergency, and sure...I'd say use it and call who ever they want to. However, that was just one example on one tragic day. Not disrespecting anyone affected by 9/11.

On a typical, normal, every-day type flight? HELL NO, keep your cell where it should be. Off and in your pocket. Let's take the flight out of the equation, there are just too many people out there to just can't take the phone away from their face in public. You know who you are, who just has to have that important lengthy conversation, screaming at the top of their voices, and in a public place.

There are places where cells are just not allowed. How would you feel when you are sitting just two chairs away from that guy, or lady, who (even with the cell on vibrate) just can't shut up during a movie. Or if you are in class, and your concentration breaks when that, not too loud ringtone goes off. Sure, those examples won't bring down a plane, but it won’t kill ya to be "out of touch for a few hours."

And don't get to me about "I can't live without it for a few hours." A school class sometimes takes more than an hour, and you don’t wanna be interrupted. Movie theaters are the same, and you don’t wanna have that $10 experience spoiled by a ringtone. If you are locked up in a flying sardine can, would you wanna be sitting next to Mr./Ms. I can't shut up via cell phone? I know that I would not.

That's just my two cents on this issue.

Give me a break...leave your outside voice, outside.

by BradPOWELL - 9/18/07 8:26 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Yes...I am in that group who votes no on cell phone use on the confines of a comercial plane. It is bad enough that we have become a society that has become berift of basic courtesies that the words "pleae" and "thank you" have become all too lacking in our daily lexicon. That people find it all too nessesary to talk insesantly into a Bluetooth headset at voice levels far too high for discreet conversation is a sad and telling indication of the depths that our society is sliding into. Perhaps the generalization does not fit YOU but you know of whom I speak and that percentage of the populace that is just one step above the primordial stew is growing in number. I am OK with wireless LAN on teh plane to check email and text but talking on the plane cannot be an option. The has to be a line and I fear that given an inch teh folks would take a mile. Besides, with the shrinking space allowed travelers on commercial airlines (I speak of any seat other than first class) there is barely room enough as it is to simply sit withou sharing sweat much less work a laptop. On teh CRJ models two grown men side by side is an exercise in arm/shgoulder space allocation. For that other fellow next to me to yak incessently on a cell phone is a level of torture that only can be experience in a miltary Survival Course "Resistance Lab" where an interogator has his way with you beyond what the Abu Garaib internees ever expeienced. Cell phones on Commercial flights...no thanks. I'd rather sit next to that smoker who smells like an old, well filled, ashtray. Oh the horror of it all.

Cell Phones on Planes---You've gotta be kidding

by bjohnm - 9/20/07 4:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

No No No No No. There are way to many morons in the world that would never shut up, and certainly would not care how loud or annoying they were. And you know what, they don't have to have their same annoying conversation with the person next to them. I fly regularly, and I know how to avoid that. I "nod off" to sleep, or bury myself in work.

As others have noted, it's a good time to get work done or catch a nap, and it's also one of the few times I know I can be "unplugged" for a little while.

I don't want to be crammed in with 10 people around me having phone conversations, and my sales people calling me for the entire trip.

Use whatever excuse you want to use, but do not allow it. I have visions of ever increasing air rage, and the flight attendants do not need to asked to police cell phone manners.

It's the same reason trains have/had smoking sections....

by Dana Nowack - 9/25/07 10:39 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

...no one wants to be bothered with the smell. As for cell phones on planes, no one wants to be bothered with the noise and other people's personal problems. This idea might only work if each plane was designed with at least three enclosed phone booths in the rear of the plane. To enforce the rule, if you are caught talking on your cell phone in any other area, it is confiscated until the end of the flight. Sometimes, you have to be taught what you learned as a child because as adults we often forget the rules of courtesy we were taught as children.
