Hi,
I have a hand-me-down desktop (no original box or paperwork) that has 3 memory slots and is running Windows XP Home. Since it does have 3 memory slots, would the maximum allowed RAM be 3GB? If not 3GB, would there be someplace to go on the computer to tell the maximum allowed amount? (Right now I have 1128MB of Memory and all of it is recognized. )
But I advise more RAM. XP is very happy at 1.0G and up but owners become incensed when they get 4GB and XP reports 3.0 to 3.5GB. Also without a special /3GB switch XP limits application use to 2.0GB. And even if your PC supports 3.5GB XP limits applications to 3.0GB.
Since you have over 1G I'm writing "don't do it."

It will tell you almost everything there is to know about your PC...including the MB Mfg Model number and Rev. Armed with that info you can usually go to the MFGs website and get all the info, manuals, drivers, BIOS updates you need regarding your MB.
Still have question ...post here again.
VAPCMD
That sounds like a great program! Is it a free download?
It'll take you 30 seconds tops. I really don't know the Everest download sites by heart so let your fingers (not mine) do the walkin'.
VAPCMD
It popped up right away on a search. Thanks for the information!
Microsoft has stated on there web site that both WinXp and Vista 32bit versions of their software will only support alittle over 3gig of ram. So waste of effort to put more than 3 gigs of ram in a computer running WinXp and or Vista 32 bit programs! The 64 bit versions of WinXp and Vista can support up to around 16 gigs of ram-probably more than any motherboard that we would use on a home built computer anyway!-Store bought computer too!
