WiFi Quilting???????

by EFCussins - 9/11/07 4:01 AM

I read, this morning, on Daily Cup of Tech that disturbed me. An article was about files sharing over a wireless network. This was not in an office or through a home. This was through a neighborhood. I get nervous whenever I turn on file and print sharing on a closed network.

What they were talking about is open non-security. If I was an evil hacker this would be the perfect way for me to inject my evil programs.

They call it the WiFi Quilt Project. What do you think about it?

WiFi Quilting Only a Concept

As the author of the post, I would like to point out that this is just a theoretical idea that I came up with. I am not suggesting that we just blindly open up all of our WiFi connections to everyone within range. In fact, I encourage people to, if anything, lock down their WiFi connections (E.g. http://www.dailycupoftech.com/2007/06/08/a-more-secure-home-wifi-design/).

This post is more about the "what if" questions. Could we potentially create an intelligent way of transferring files via secured and encrypted WiFi links to help reduce Internet bandwidth.

I think that with some intelligent thought and design considerations, I think that we could do just this. I know for myself, I would probably have two WiFi connections into my home, one for my internal network and one in an untrusted DMZ zone that others could access in a read-only fashion and that I could control from my network.
