Cell phones one planes

by bkscott - 9/6/07 5:19 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Text and check messges only. My experience with people on cell phones is that they think they are using tin cans with a string and talk louder than normal voice levels. Ringtones interrupting the public space would be annoying too.

No No and No !

Too obvious to answer why.

Sure... Why Not

by CTerrian - 9/6/07 6:14 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

While I'm flying, I could care less what the others are doing. My only complaint during a flight was this rotten kid who kept kicking the back of my seat. Maybe if he had a cell phone to play with, I would have been much happier.
But what's the big deal anyway? Most seasoned flyers kick back the seat and were headsets. If others are on the phone, it won't be that bothersome.

sick of it

by punkzanyj - 9/6/07 7:37 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Because people already act as if the world is their personal phone booth when they have a phone. I'm already a captive audience to someone else's phone conversation on the bus and train here in Chicago. I do not want to be subjected to this in the air.

If people could follow any sort of courtesy when using a cell phone, this wouldn't be an issue, but most people don't care if they bother anyone else with their loud calls. Do I need to hear your gossip about your job? Do I need to hear about how your sister in law is a f*cking B!tch? How about you wait till you get wherever you're going to talk about your date last night?

If I can't even have my PSP on during takeoff because it might interfere with the nav system, I have a hard time believing it will be 100% superfine to have a cellphone transmitting and receiving.

Cell phones on airplanes. Safety and annoying conversations

by labtechs66 - 9/7/07 5:49 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a friend who flew for United. He said they didn't allow cell phones as it was a safety issue. He said, "there is a reason why there are not small items allowed on the floors". In the event of a emergancy landing, small items such as cell phones can become dangerous. How would you like a cell phone flying by your head as the plane decended at high speeds? Not me.

Second, have you ever been at a movie and someone is talking on their cell phone? In that event, you at least have the option to leave. In a plane, you can't leave. You are stuck for the duration of that flight with someone talking and talking and talking and talking, (you get the drift). Is there a solution? I don't see how you could enforce any rules that would help relieve the situation.

Even if a plan is figured out so cell phones would not be dangerous if the plane became unstable, I don't want to sit next to someone chatting for hours! If people were not so thoughtless and rude, then I'd be all for allowing cell phones on airplanes. However, there are people that are thoughtless to others and it could really make a long flight miserable!

No cell phones on airplanes!

Is it about ringtones or noise?

by tgg1979 - 9/7/07 10:37 AM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Many people keep talking about ring tones etc. In my opinion, the first issue is security. Flying, even if some don't see it like that is a risk and as much as possible it would be good to limit those risks. So the first issue is that of security: do they interfere with navigational and communications systems? If it is clearly determined that this is not the case then a plane is just like being on a bus or train, just another means of communication.

Now, let's just suppose for a second that after many studies it was determined that cell phones are safe to use on planes then it should be allowed the same way it is on busses etc.

No Cell Phones on Planes

by SFDANGERMAN - 9/7/07 12:44 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Flying is already stressful enough with screaming kids and babies, pets (I had a cat next to me once, nearly had an allergy attack and only one other seat left so I moved - Animals do not belong in the cabin, if they do I'mm bringing a possum to prove my point), drunks, and unlike the 1970's when people were polite and dressed up, fllying today ias worse than taking the Greyhound bus (which I still do sometimes) Imagine trying to sleep if someone is talking for 6 hours cross country, you know it will happen. And imagine the risk to companies when employess talk business and include confidential information. The me is number one society has taken over, rules are no longer complied with let alone common courtesy. Technolgy is great, but we have to stop promoting a 24/7 rat race. There needs to be some downtime and time to rest relax read a book or do work on the laptop. I can imagine already if this is allowed there will be increased tensions and very likely aggression. And it is not just in US. In Europe in 1999, I leaned my seat back on the bus, and of course this guy complained. Don't balme me blame the bus design. Not my fault your so pig headed I cannot rest my backfor comfort. Also, I have been rear ended once while a guy was on a cell phone driving, and still have neck problems after 12 years. $8200 settlement does not cover my continued pain and suffering. Also been hit by a car while driver was on a cell phone, did not even stop. So we allneed to use these devices in a safe manner and not cause harm or discomfort to others. I see everyone promoting world peace here in teh bay area and global harmony all of which I agree with, but start at your own personal level and see if you are pissing people off first. As well as your carbon foot print, look at your ******* footprint as well. Most of you have a huge ******* footprint and do not get it.

Some people really do need their cell phones.

by jimcjhb - 9/7/07 7:07 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I work for a company that does business from Alaska to Northern CA and have a CEO and EVP/COO that frequently travel to the various locations in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Northern CA. There are times that I need to speak with these persons and even others with more focused jobs within our organization. If these guys are on planes, then even though I may have a legitimate emergency, I have to wait until they get on the ground before I can get their input on time sensitive issues. I agree that there are some persons out there that have absolutely no regard for others in their vicinity and can be extremely rude with their loud conversations, however, I think that cell phones are valuable tools for the business community and should be utilized to their maximum benefit.

The company you work for requires a Business Plan desperately

by Vicdownunder - 9/8/07 2:16 AM In reply to: Some people really do need their cell phones. by jimcjhb

Business was in place a long time before cell phones
and there are a lot of indispensable people on boot hill but life/business goes on.
I have a business partner and when I fly he takes over all the delegation, as I may not return from holiday. (Wish)
Air flights are fatiguing enough without cell phones.
No cell phones for peoples safety, "sanity" and an old fashion thing called manners that are disappearing in this world.

Cell phones on Airplanes

by rmckean - 9/7/07 7:36 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I wonder how well the service would even work at 30,000 feet thats over 5 miles from the nearest cell tower. I live less than 1 mile from a tower and I get poor service inside my home.
I am for cell phone usage because I use an air card on my laptop for internet access that uses a cell phone modem

Everyone is missing a huge fact here!

by jamesbrydon - 9/7/07 9:01 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm a private pilot, so I know first hand that it's almost impossible to get a single above 5,000 ft (I have Sprint). Almost every single ATP flight is above 20,000 ft, unless the airlines put antennas on their planes, you will not be able to make a call.

restrictions!

by bornlikethis38 - 9/7/07 10:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Scientifically, talking on your cell phones which I think includes voice mail is bad for the planes, but text messaging is not because of the type of information you send, but if you have the ability to use text messaging then your phone can at the same time receive calls which can bring that plane down. I know all that research thats going on is saying that cell phones don't have an effect on planes, but that only applies to private jets, almost any rotary plane and commercial jet could go down and kill hundreds.
