Hey guys,
I am about to buy me some HDTV and I narrowed my choices down to Pioneer PDP-5080HD or Panasonic TH-50PZ700U.
I want to hear some opinions which one I should pick and why? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
I was looking at the same two TVs, and I decided on the Pioneer 5080, even though the Panny is a 1080p. The first reason for my decision was that I thought the Pioneer had a better picture on it, with better contrast and better color saturation, it just looked better than the Panny, even with the Pioneer being 720p and the Panny 1080p.
Second the quality on the Pioneer is better, not that Panasonic is bad, they're not, Pioneer is just better.
And third, I liked the speakers on the Pioneer better, with its dual digital amps, the speakers on the Pioneer sound better than a lot of satellite speakers that you can buy. Couple that with the fact that the Pioneer has its own sub woofer output on the back of the TV, you don't need to hook it up to a home theater set up to get great sound from it. In my home where the TV went, it is almost impossible to have a home theater set up in that room, so I have my Pioneer set to surround sound and the sub woofer plugged into the back of the TV, and I have actually had people that came over ask me where I hid the surround speakers because they were hearing it, but they couldn't see any speakers.
As far as the 1080p thing is concerned, I sit twelve feet from the TV, and from everything I've read, at that distance on a 50" TV you can not see the difference between 720p and 1080p. Which brings me back to reason #1, which was, even though the Pioneer is 720p, it still has a better picture. One last thing is the cnet ratings, the Pioneer PDP5080HD got a 8.7, the Panasonic TH50PZ700U got 8.0, so don't let the 1080p hype make your decision.
Now I am a bit confused though. You keep saying this thing about 1080p, don't they both have 1080p support?
I really want 1080p cause I play video games and watch HD movies and stuff.
Once again, I thought they both supported 1080p.
The Pioneer does support 1080p but it is rated at 720p (768 to be exact) as far as output. You can play 1080p video games and HD movies with no problem and they will look fantastic. It simply scales the 1080p to the TV. As I said at the end of my last post, don't get hung up on all the 1080p hype. You wont see any difference unless you're sitting three feet away from the TV, and then it will be very minor. Far more important is the video processing and filtering, which is far superior on the Pioneer. I have a XBOX 360 with the HDMI cable, and it looks fantastic on my 5080.
Bottom line, why do you think cnet rated the Pioneer 8.7 and the Panasonic 8.0?
What type of subwoofer will I be able to hook to this TV? I cannot get an answer from any local sales people or the manual for the TV.
I don't have room for the home theater system and would like to get the best sound possible from the TV itself.
cost ratio from very decent Panny. But the Panny just isn't a Pioneer.
Depends on your budget & wants.
I want one that is rated at 1080p.
I have also decided to go with the Pioneer PDP-5080HD. Definitely do not let the 1080p label fool you. A lot of things come into play such as screen size and view distance. If you are sitting eight feet or more away from your set then at 50" you will not see the difference. Also, burn-in is greatly exaggerated. Yes it can happen. As long as you properly break in your tv you should have no problems. You may notice some image retention. That is NOT burn-in. It will go away. Once you buy your set refer to AVSForums.com to get a good idea of how you should have your settings for break in. The break in period is the first 100-200 hrs. of use. If you have an old crt or another set I suggest gaming on that until your tv is broken in. Best of luck with your purchase!
with a whole other thread. Sorry about that. Anyways, due to the inablity to edit posts...here it goes. The pioneer has better connectivity. It is rare that you find a plasma of this class with 4 HDMI and a cable card slot. Not to mention all of the componet connections as well. Hell, ecstatic when I found one that had 3 HDMI inputs. Also, due to the deeper levels of black the Pioneer tends to have better color saturation than the Panny. I guess you really have to compare them side by side at your nearest B&M store. As I said before, don't let that fancy 1080p label fool you. Think of the room where you will be placing your set, the viewing distance, ambient light(due to the Pioneer's anti-glare screen) and so on and so forth.
here's the thing. my apartment is pretty small and I'll setup the HDTV in the living room and probably sit about 6 feet from it. the room isn't very bright because it's not on the sunny side.
what do you think?
The best thing I can tell you is to go to your nearest Best Buy or what not and compare the two side by side. View them from the distance that you would be viewing them from home. From there I think it will come down to which you personally find better. Also, I know that the Pioneer uses a pixel orbiter to lessen the chance of burn in. Burn in is a non issue if you properly break in your set. Find out what, if any, the panny uses to combat burn in and also treat it if it does happen. From there I guess is what you like the most. Good luck!
I know what you're going through, been looking at HD TVs to buy for 3 months and finally found the best one. Cnet doesn't have the complete review and rating yet because it's too new. The Pioneer PDP 5010FD is true 1080p and the black levels are out of this world, 80% better then any other plasma! Got mine yesterday and I'm stoked!
Yes the PDP 5080 looked better then any other plasma TV until I saw the PDP 5010...called Pioneer tech suport and it's their best out there at this time, better the Cnet's top two rating plasmas which happen to be both Pioneer.
I might have to consider Pioneer PDP-5010FD. Looks awesome!
I was set on buying the PDP-5080HD. Now this set comes out. I found the 5080HD for $2400 and the 5010FD for $3870. Im wondering if the $1500 extra would be worth it. Hopefully they have a review up on here soon. I would like to see how it performs.
yea, there's a hefty price difference but I really wanna know if it's worth it.
come on CNET, give us the review for 5010FD already!
