I can sleep through the clickety click, but not through the "big boss to employee" conversations or any others for that matter. Three hours is a short flight for me with 6 hours coast-to-coast being the norm. I like to catch up on some sleep or read during those times and lots of cell phone talking (or any at all) would distract my attention or prevent my sleep. Checking voice mail should also be a quiet thing that could be done, but NOT replying to a voice mail - same problem with lots of talking about things that I do not or should not have an interest in and that would keep me awake.

There are legitimate times when a person might actually need to use a cell phone on a plane but I think there should be significant penalties to disuade the yakity idiot that has no respect for the other passengers, e.g. 1) a major "air-roaming" surcharge (probably a higher cost for those "cost-is-no-object snobs" in first class), 2) a special "booth" about the size of the toilet with maybe two or three "stalls" to isolate callers from the other passengers and 3) some way of limiting connect time to maybe one or two minutes. And no inbound calls! Also an electromagnetic shield around the lavatory!
None of these are difficult to implement and would provide the air traveler with the opportunity to make that important call.
Absolutely not! There are always irresponsible persons who will take liberties, annoy other people and cause dangerous disputes. Air safety must be paramount
Although I can see having the convenience of it (ie. not having to pay to use the airline phone). The cons out way the pros far more. It's bad enough when people chat unnecessarily on their cellphones while they are driving. Now imagine a bunch of them confined in a small area gabbing away. And trust me, there is enough cellphone junkies out there, that it's safe to say that's what you'll get on an airline. And because of that, more passengers will get annoyed, arguments will ensue, safety will be compromised. And all for what? Some woman wants to know the latest gossip her gal pals have. Some dude is trying to impress a chic on the other line. Not worth all the hassel.
One can argue that there are some people that actual could benefit. As in a business person conducting last minute deals. Contacting family or friends regarding delays. But those are only a hand full of legitimate reasons. For the most part, people will just use them to break boredom, gabbing for the sake of gabbing. With no consideration for others.
Most cell phones can radiate up to .4 watts while transmitting. If 50 people are talking on their phones this is collectively 20 watts of concentrated rf energy distributed randomly throughout the plane. This is approximately the power level at which the aircraft communicates with the ground. However, aircraft antennas are placed external to the shielding aluminum skin of the aircraft and are installed with high levels of engineering care and lots of electronic equipment compatibility testing. Fifty cell users would employ one hundred(transmit/receive from on-board cell equipment) different frequencies in the cell bands producing many and varied signal mixing combinations. Add to that the unknown mixing catalysts of turned off AM/FM radios, on or off MP3 players and a host of other electronics that can passively generate spurious signals in the presence of RF (transmitter signals) and you have an uncontrollable and unknowable spectrum of RF noise. Will it interfere with navigation/communication? Maybe not, but no rf engineer worth a grain of salt is going to sign a document guaranteeing a plane will not have problems that could endanger human life.
I say load up the planes with cell users and sometime in the next year or two a serious incident is likely to occur and that will put the issue to rest. There's nothing like smoldering bodies and big lawsuits to stamp out the "anyone can make a call anytime" dreams of cell phone addicts.
Remember, the creator made selfish, rude and stupid people too. Sometimes they get their way---for a while.
How annoying is it to have to listen to someone else's conversation while standing in line at the bank? Multiply that by . . . thanks, but no thanks.
Many times when I am flying I am either trying to concentrate on putting final touches on a presentation or I am trying to relax in preparation of an upcoming event. I don't need the annoyance of multiple conversations, not to say anything about some of the more obnoxious ring tones.
If we are forced to have to put up with cell phones on flights - cordoned off a "special area" for those that just simply cannot be out of touch!
I find cell phones annoying enough in the office, stores, parks, etc. On a plane there is no way to get away from the cell phone.
The FAA is not the one who has bans. Most people think that is the reason. They could care less. The primary reason the airlines do not dant you using cells on the birds is for the sake of the FCC ban. You will be tripping a huge amount of towers all at once rather than only hitting around 3 at a time on ground. Your signal will me confused in the cell system at an elevation of 320 or so depending on the length of your flight. Think about it. Tripping 40 towers plus is confussing for the computer system to direct to the ground trunk system.
It has NOTHING to do with the avionics. The FAA frequencies are in the 120's to be generic. Airplane phones (early generation) were in the early 400's. Second generation changed slightly but are still are in the same neighborhood. The Turbines cause more RF than your phones will put out; not to mention the electric static the wings build up and radiate off.
You can fly around in small birds (general aviation) and use cells no problem. It is a scare tactic the industry has been using on the people.
Cell phones provide a very vital link when used properly for work or emergencies (not for social calls) - they are very useful and indispensable. 9/11 would never have taken place had cell phones been allowed to be used on board. Imagine a 100 callers calling 911, NYPD, the world trade centre, the CIA, Pentagon, USAF, White House, US Army all together!! The warnings & callers would have been so many that most probably - 99% probability - the 9/11 attacks would not have been able to be pulled off succesfully - unless a moron was ruling the USA and morons/villains were staffing all these offices. There would have been so many calls and warnings, that surely the USAF or someone would have shot the planes down or taken alternative action.
This proves how useful and indispensable cell phones (with all functions) on flights can be to prevent hijacking and terrorism and accidents/disasters - eg. if an aircraft has lost an engine/all engines, has got lost/crashed or someone has fallen sick.
If I had to listen to some college age bimbo talking drivel for 4 hours on my flights from Phoenix to New York I would probably have a police car waiting for me on the other end. It's bad enough listening to their crappy music bleeding out of their Ipods...
This may sound warped but remember 9/11 ????
Think about this for a moment ....
How many cell phones do you think were used that day ???
Not one report from ANYONE that they could NOT get through
to a loved one because of INTERFERENCE on any level no matter
of the call came in to a cell phone or out from a cell phone.
The only reason I'd say no is if someone talked loud enough
to disturb the person in the next seat/row.
People on cell phones have absolutely no manners. It is bad enough to have to listen to someone shouting into their cellphone or talking about the intimate details of their lives without the chance or ability to get away from them. I think that if it were legal, that I would henceforth refuse to fly anywhere for any reason. I think that the same rules should apply to all public places, until some technology is developed that makes their calls completely private from all other people around them. Who among us has not had to put up with some person talking loudly on their cellphone in a restaurant or theater? There is too much noise in our lives already without the banal chatter of uncaring people on cellphones.
A designated area should be set aside for it, so that people could go there to make a call. Or there should be an area you can choose to sit in where cellphones are allowed. A bit like the old smoking or no smoking debate. As a non smoker, I'm like the guy who says it should be allowed if they go outside to do it, smoking that is.
The trouble with cell phones is that when you are in an enclosed area, you become a victim of the user. You can't escape hearing how Wuvvy Duvvy wuvs Schnuggle Buns or how Mr Powermad threatens his peons into action or Miss Blah-Blah-Blah impales you with her YAKKITY-YAK-YAK-YAK at a pitch and volume suitable for a jet engine testing facility. It's unlikely that anyone is so important that they can't do without talking to someone via cell phone for the duration of a flight. The text and/or voice mail checking would be great...no ringers, musical tones, etc. But if they really need to talk, set them up a couple phone booths in the back or near the restrooms.
Ever put your phone next to your tv when your're making a call or using data? If not do so, see what happens. Now imagine that on plane instruments and com channels when landing.
They say no phones for a reason.
