Text messaging, only, if...

by ldschap - 9/5/07 8:49 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Text messaging I think would be fine, except some phone have really loud clicking sounds when they input characters. If those could be muted, then I think it would be fine. But those clickety-click sounds can be more distracting in a way than a quiet conversation on that same cellphone.
Also, in case of emergency, the Captain would always have the right to have passengers cease and desist using their cellphones, if in his view, they are providing a nuisance either to other passengers, or to the operation of the airplane itself.
Common sense and decency should be the rule here, don't you think?

No

by Illio - 9/5/07 8:53 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The thing of it is, human beings on cell phones lose all concept of what it means to be courteous to those around them. They also tend to take a mile when you give them an inch, so allowing them to text message or check their emails means that in an instant they will be talking on the phone and yelling in our ears.

So no, let's keep the distractions to rowdy children and people with normal loud voices. That is enough.

Absolutely not on planes

by tensbuff2 - 9/5/07 9:00 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Given the proliferation of inconsideration in use of cell phone is public, use on planes would create captive victims who would be unable to escape to another room.

FAA WILL NOT ALLOW IT!

by FCouples1211 - 9/5/07 9:18 PM In reply to: Absolutely not on planes by tensbuff2

It is not up to the discretion of the airlines... it is the FAA! Cell phone use is unsafe for planes because it not only can interfere with radio communications but it can also affect the VOR instrument tracking and positioning systems on the aircraft. If the right signal at the correct frequency is sent out by a cell phone, the aircraft's VOR may suddenly point to the cell phone signal instead of pointing towards an airport beacon or ground VOR. This affects the plane's ILS and navigation systems which can be fatal during an instrument-rated 0 visibility landings.

No, H-E-double hockey sticks No, Absolutely NOT!

by zephyr99 - 9/5/07 9:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Please take this from a "road warrior" who does turn the phone back on as soon as the announcement after touchdown allows--cell activity DURING the flight is NOT a good idea. Too many people would believe their "right" equates to a license for rude, inconsiderate behavior. I fly nearly weekly, and I've seen it all. No set of "rules" will ensure a pleasant flight for all passengers, and flight attendants have a difficult enough time taking the hits for ATC & weather delays and other issues totally outside their realm of control . . . people with a dispensation for the inappropriate will not adhere to any gracious admonishment from a flight attendant. Oh, and to say “just texting” will work—do you know how many passengers push the envelope on every single restriction? I do not want my energy drained by the fights that will ensue or the ceaseless tapity-tap of those who will push this ability to the max. I spend far too many hours in confined quarters at cruise altitude--please do not make incessant chatter a part of this experience.

Cell Phones on Airplanes.

by plwertz - 9/5/07 9:21 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Should not be allowed. In the crowded environment of a aircraft cabin, use of cell phone violates the privacy and comfort of all others on board, especially the guy in the adjacent seat to the caller. I could see allowing a call ten minutes before landing for the purpose of notifying someone standing by with transportation.

cell phones on planes

by morroaldy - 9/5/07 9:26 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

it's already too noisy on planes. It seems there's nowhere in America a person can have any quiet time. Betweem the smells, the stagnant air, the obligatory drunk and the kid, planes are a like a test you have to get through.

NO F...ing Way!

by jandav41 - 9/5/07 9:36 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

People on buses talk loud, louder and loudest on their cellphone, as if they have the right and privilege to interfere on someone else's peace-and-quiet and peace-of-mind, often becoming argumentative, and then abrasive, both with the called-to and with you if you complain and ask them to 'hold it down'! A bus is a closed-environment, but one can move to another spot, or get off the bus, but definitely NOT SO on an airplane, whether on the gound or in flight. The noise-level could become impossible - imagine 300 squalling children - and the urge to commit murder comes quickly to mind..... "Road rage" would have nothing on "plane rage"....

Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes?

by tlebert1 - 9/5/07 10:04 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

For texting and voice mail only with the restrictions that the phones be set on vibrate, no speaker phone and keypad sounds shut off. Offenders would have their phones flushed down the toilet and could retrieve them after the flight. If they really wanted to??

Yes, full function... with caveots of course

by cascadia4 - 9/5/07 10:22 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think they should be allowed, however, rules must be put into place. Like I mentioned in another thread... there are already Airphones, and people can place calls on those all they want.

It needs to be communicated effectively that voice use is for short calls at a reasonable tone. To get the point across more effeciently, perhaps advise people that if they refuse to disconnect the call after two warnings they will be banned from flying with the airline.

It really needs to be a case by case basis.

And, if you really think about it, it's issues like this that point out what is horribly wrong in our nation: a 'me first, screw you all' attitude. No one is considerate anymore, even these jerks on here complaining about loud people on their cell phones. Do you all drive at the speed limit, signal while turning, smile and wave (enzyte guy style), and have never cut anyone off? If you answered YES to all the above questions, you are either a freak of nature, outright lying, or in the worst case of denial I have heard. I talk on the phone all the time while grocery shopping. Many times I'm not even saying anything, and people give me dirty looks. I whisper and people put their noses up in the air. Same people get into their car, open the phone, and damn near kill 3 people getting out of the lot.

So, let the cell phones be used on the plane, vibrate ring only, and short, quiet calls. If you fail to be a considerate human being, they should just tazer your ass and throw you off the plane once it lands.

Well said

by TXBrandi - 11/26/07 8:03 AM In reply to: Yes, full function... with caveots of course by cascadia4

YAY! well said! Thank you! I see people all the time talking on the phone in public and they are not yelling and they don't disturb me any more than if someone was standing right there with them. If they did this on a plane, I would not be annoyed as long as it didn't go on the entire time and it was not night time. Of course I agree that there are some stupid, selfish, annoying people, but I like the "tazer their A** idea! I think if we keep standing up to those jerks, people will be forced to be polite and this could work.

I hate all the generalizations about people who use cell phones in public. It is not true that we all yell or that we are addicted to our phones. Just because you see us on the phone in the grocery store does not mean that we always spend half the day talking about nothing and we have no life or that we are insecure. Sometimes we are just taking care of business or catching up with a friend while we are shopping because we won't have time later! I am very busy and I just like to multi-task so that I don't find myself at home sitting on my butt talking on the phone -that is something I can do while I shop -and I guarantee you that I don't talk any louder while I do it and I don't even do it all the time or for very long at a time. I don't talk when I'm checking out and I don't talk about personal stuff that would be inappropriate. If for some reason, the person on the other end can't hear me in my normal voice, I tell them I'll have to call them back later so that I don't yell. People should not judge all of us the same. I see many other polite cell phone users all the time!

Yes - Under certain rules

by jonnyj771 - 9/5/07 10:24 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The rules would be;
1. Respect others and put your phone on vibrate
2. No headsets are needed, you aren't driving
3. Respect others and keep the language clean, at the same time, keep your voice down to a minimum
4. keep calls to under 5 minutes.
5. no Speaker phone

Any violators will have their phone confiscated, and they can be cited for infractions. The citations can be delegated between the FAA and the airline.

Should Cell Phones on Planes Be Allowed No No No

by BigJer53 - 9/5/07 10:34 PM In reply to: Poll: Should cell phones be allowed on planes? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

JerSooz says ... Just recently was on planes going both to Denver and also Chicago from California let's just say Let's Keep it Quiet

The just before Take Off and as Land that alone is amazing how quickly can grab our cells ... more amazing is how others like myself are looking to see if others are complying ... Not a Question if a Cell Phone might crash the Plane ... It's more Can Others follow driections so can have an Orderly Flight plus stay calm ... enough nerves are frayed with the 1st Time Flyers alone being extremely tense

Now the Reason say No No No even to Text Messages is Number 1 imagine a Person has just Broken up with Someone! ... Do You think You can Control this Person on an Emotional Roller Coaster doing the "I Love You More! No I Love You More!"... Better yet is it the Flight Crews resonsibility also? ... Bet would say with Big No to both

Second Scenario People Traveling who do Business ... What if the Business Meeting or Deal Traveling to ... The 1st is Canceled or 2nd Falls through ... Again Don't You think might have an Emotionally Upset Person

For Business People if a Person doesn't understand Your Traveling to Meet Them is why can't contact you ... Then better might think of a different Person or Place to do Business with ... There's a Control issue here ... None of Us are that Important even especially when flying ...

*Notice next time on a Plane is like a Big Trailer of Cattle just think what if everybody was even Rocking in Seat Emotionally upset* Yoo Hoo People who Fly lovingly refer to Flying as another "Cattle Call" did You ever ask why?

Since 911 People are looking to who might stand up with to Protect the Plane if on Your Cell Your Not the One! Your to Self Centered plus may have already put yourself in Danger ... You Might just be the Idiot a Terrorist might use as an example "See this Loud Mouth who Talks to Much Thinks is so Important" Yes a Big Reason also Cell Phones even Text Messaging shouldn't be allowed

(Oh Yes Why No Text Messaging See Above!... 2nd Reason Being Might if Text Messaging a Terrorist Might be Embellished to Follow a Time Schedule as in Message Stating "Give Your Life Up So Can Send a Message to World You Can Be a Hero to the Cause if You Crash This Plane")

Maybe Now will See the Big Picture! Why Cell Phones or PDA's that can transmitt Text Messages should never be allowed if Not Enough this here is the Last and Final One

Just Put Yourself back to Last Dropped Conversation or Better Yet seeing the "No Service Available" when used Cell ... Now ask Yourself did You stay Calm?
