Need small speakers for yacht but don't want to use Bose!

by emrtr4 - 9/2/07 12:38 PM

It seems that the yachting/ boating industry loves Bose because of their small footprint. I happen to know some things about audio and I know that Bose is overpriced and weak on sound.

What systems or speakers (I am looking for high end) would rival a bose system in terms of footprint size. This would be a system used indoors on a yacht and as thus I am not looking for "marine specific" equipment, but residential audio.

Also, while this is a high end yacht there is not a lot of room for major audio/ video equipment. What would be a good small A/V receiver ?

How small is small

I believe its very hard to overcome tiny cabinet volume. So how small? What do you expect from them? Sub as well? Just two speakers? Do you like it bright and forward, or laid-back/warm? If just two speakers, you only need a stereo integrated. Is this the case?

What is the all important budget for any component? Cost is of zero concern?

These are bigger than Bose, are self powered, designed for near-field it seems. Don't know the cost, but not cheap I imagine, one idea:

POLK SPEAKERS, wide range of sizes. Same goes for KLIPSCH, check out their CINEMA SERIES '6' and '8' models are very good. Even a bit smaller are their two "QUINTET" systems. NHT, (NOW HEAR THIS) speakers are excellent.

Aimed toward the "higher-end" make sure to check out the Danish made JAMO brand. Now owned by KLIPSCH Audio Technologies, their distribution is more wide-spread. JAMO manufactures many higher quality systems. Even a line dedicated to special applications.

Best shopping

P.S. I don't know of any high quality "midi-size" A/V/Receivers.
17" to 17 1/4" is pretty much the standard rack size. riv.

Mini speaker popularity has come & gone over the years. Certainly not well versed on them, I am aware of the highly regarded Mirage brand. These are a step above direct sold Orb & probably Gallo, too. They are of the roughly spherical shape & project the sound omni-directionally. Their Omnistat model is $1700; the cheaper Nanostat @ $800 a pair.

Midi receivers? Mass market audio makers have had midi size units over the years. Mostly somewhat unexceptional. A better quality maker, NAD, has a half width receiver/CD unit (NAD C715). No video capability in it. But NAD has the good rep for better than mass market/headed towards higher end quality.

A quick online look could determine if they may be of further interest. Good hunting.
