I use CCleaner and Eusing Free Registry cleaner. One finds what the other one misses.
I have found through all the years of using Windows XP that it really benefits your XP Experience if you re-install. Trying to fix your registry, or going in and editing your services & startups is tricky business. And a lot of the time, more time consuming than a fresh install. It is legnthy, tedious, but your computer will hum....( Of course if you do this, back-up all your data (MUSIC< PICTURES<VIDEOS<CUSTOM SETTINGS>)etc.
When your re-install windows uninstall all programs that are obsolete, unused, or bad. Do all of your Windows updates, and then install your anti-spy & Anti-Virus. I have done this well over 100 times(In a Computer repair sideline Business). It is what has worked for me.
I started having the same sloooowww ness of my XP just this week. Each time I wanted to download, I could only achieve 15kbps in spite of previously enjoying 500+ on ADSL.!
I have read countless pieces of advice and papers from googling this and that.
It seems to me that the consensus of opinion is that a re-install is not only necessary in this case but also advisable . It is even recommended by Georgia University boffin to re-install at least every 6 months (OIT paper from 2003).
In my case, the problem seems to be a bit more terminal because there are so many glitches appearing each time I try now to re-install my XP. I have this morning decided to dispense with my 4 year old HD (Westinghouse , i think, ) and purchase a new 160 GbHitachi PATA from PC World at only £30.
I am convinced that this is the solution. Fingers crossed!
cheers
Ed
A lot of good advice here. The main two things that cause slowness that wasn't once there, are RAM use and Background program.
In my experience, McAfee (and Norton) have been major issues on XP. I use Grisoft - AVG and have no problems whatsoever.
I use CCleaner too, and that helsp a ton. The recommendations to re-install every so often is absolutely true, as unfortunate as it is. It puts everything in it's place, and most updates and patches are pushed out based on the notion that it's going on a completely default and fresh OS setup.
I'm no computer expert, but a few weeks ago my Compaq computer that was less than a year old (and fortunately still under warranty) started to run so slow I could do almost anything in the amount of time it took to even start up a program. I ran the PC Doctor that came in the software with the computer and it gave me an error code that I could report to HP for technical help. It turned out that my hard drive had to be replaced. I got it back last week and it has been running like new. I ran the PC Doctor when I first started having some problems with the computer in January (it was only 4 months old!) and it told me I had hard drive damage. I did not want to have to start from scratch loading everything back in so I did not contact them at that time. The problems with the slowness forced me into it just in time. By the way, I don't recommend the Compaq computer, but the HP warranty service was fantastic. It was quick and painless (for having to ship it to HP.) They also gave me the option to send me a new hard drive to install myself.
Clean out junk files, "defragment" your hard drive, "check disk" your hard drive (check both boxes). Buy Iolo, System Mechanic 7 Professional for about $40.00(US). This program does it all and is available at Terget. Do the maintenance and run this program routinely (every 18 hours of use or so). If you don't know how something works you'll need to learn, don't be afraid, "helps" can be found throughout the OS. The worst that can happen is you'll have to start over or need to buy a new computer. If these suggestions don't help then come back and we'll look deeper. Could be "other" but doubtful.
Ignore the last item on this list unless you have to.

Also, don't forget your emails and pictures. Photos take up a great deal of disk space. Throw stuff away.
Hello again everyone, it's Jonontherd
I want to thank everyone who answered my post and participation. Seems this is a fairly common problem, well I took your suggestions and my PC is running better now but do every once in awhile will get a program that will seize up so I'll have to reboot and start over. But in the future I plan on dumping XP all together and run Windows Media because my focus is watching movies and music. I'm gonna put in a HP Lightscribe burner and a 800 MB hard drive ang a Gig of ram so I can put some of my favorite movies on it, heck one day I'll get broadband so I can have on demand like Netflix. All of you have been a big a valued help to me and props goes out to you all who have maid my life a little easier.

Hi All:
Thank you everyone for helping me with ideas to free up my slow computer. After repeated defragmentation, rebooting, and the finale hidden Temp files from DVD files I can say I am now up to 50% free disk space thanks to your suggestions.
