NEW iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme (Aluminium + Glass)

by h.amiri - 8/10/07 5:07 AM

Hi all,

As much as I love the new iMac's im frustrated at the vagueness of the specs.

We all know the top end model is a 2.8GHz Intel Core2Extreme.
Those who are interested in purchasing one might even realise that the Intel Core2Extreme line of processors are available in both duo and quad core configurations.

Does Anyone know if the chipset here is a DUO or QUAD core?

Thanks for all your help.

Based on the specs at Intel

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 8/10/07 6:10 AM In reply to: NEW iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme (Aluminium + Glass) by h.amiri

and the specs of the iMac at Apple, I would say that the processor is the Intel Core2 Extreme dual-core mobile processor x7800.
This processor has 4 MB of shared L2 cache, the Quad-Core has 8 MB, and an 800Mhz FSB. (Not mentioned at the Apple site)

Now, to answer your next question.

It could be considered quite likely that we will see a Quad-Core iMac at some time, but I would not hold my breath.

The Apple iMac site says

"2.0GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, or 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor"

http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html

Nothing about Quad core in the iMac...

It does, but

the Quad-Core processor is also called Intel Core 2 Extreme processor.

yeah, I thought it would be called the Intel Core 4 Extreme processor too!, so I checked with Intel

Someday, quad-core iMacs will arise

by BeatleMegaFan - 8/10/07 4:33 PM In reply to: It does, but by mrmacfixit Moderator

I figure that since the only Intel Mac advertised to have quad-cores was the Mac Pro, they wouldn't go ahead and make the iMac with a quad-core without upping the Mac Pro some.

The rest of the iMac line is dual-core, so it is safe to reason that the 2.8Ghz iMac is also a dual-core. The site doesn't actually say, " the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor is a dual-core processor," but if you look under the technology pages for it, the name of the processor info page is called "Intel Core 2 Duo processor". They mention the Intel Extreme processor, but they refer to both as one and the same, or at least very similar.

The rest of the processor info talks about the power of the dual-cores and how they operate, so yes, the Intel Core 2 Extreme processor in this case is a dual-core.

The Mac Pro can be very expensive if you decide to make a quad-core, and to get an iMac for less than that with a similar processor wouldn't make sense. The Mac Pro costs $3997.00 with a quad-core processor (processor upgrade only), and the high-end iMac costs $2299.00 without any upgrades.

Roughly, you'd pay about more than half of the price of the Mac Pro for a similar quad-core processor.

Of course, this makes no sense because then the iMac would be much more than it is, so that means yes, it is a dual-core.

X7900

The core 2 extreme in it is the Dual Core, 2.8 GHz Intel X7900. Once again, it is a pre-release processor that can not be used by other makers or bought in a store. Same thing happened with the 3 GHz 8 Core Mac Pro but prolly the 3GHz has been released by now.

Talked to a guy at the Apple store today

by PimPamPeter - 8/19/07 5:29 AM In reply to: NEW iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme (Aluminium + Glass) by h.amiri

... and he said all iMacs have a MOBILE chip. Only these chipsets stay within heat-limits.

So the 2.8Ghz has a Intel Core 2 Extreme chipset with 2 cores. The 4 core chip gets way too warm inside the confined space of the new iMac.
Basically the chip in the 2.8Ghz model is the exact same as the 2.4, only maxed out/tweaked, so it does get warmer than the 2.4ghz model.
I ordered myself the new 2.8 iMac so I'm very curious to the levels of ventilation during heavy duty apps... I'll find out soon enough! :-)

Only if Intel finds a way to cool the Quadcore chip down, will there be an iMac with Quadcore.

Quad -core or not... It rocks if you're coming off a G5 unit

by mediafrenzie - 8/22/07 8:14 AM In reply to: Talked to a guy at the Apple store today by PimPamPeter

What I read is that the 2.8GHz iMac sports an overclocked 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800.

If you go to the following site you can see a performance benchmark comparing the 2.4 DUO to the 2.0 and the 2.8 iMacs. The performance jump makes it worth the increase in price in my opinion.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/08/14/apples_new_imac_core_2_extreme_mac_mini_benchmarked.html

At the same time, Apple has been playing the 2.8mhz sort of low key which makes me wonder if they're not too certain of the product just yet. Well... I'm guinea pig enough to make the jump. The perfomance of even the 2.4 iMac kicks my G5 Dual 2.0 ghz in rear.

My suggestion would be is to trick it up right though. Go for all the options you can afford - huge hard drive, Extreme chip and the 24" screen. As Maccentral and MacLife.com noted, the 24" screen is 10x better by far in color, clarity and the viewing angle.

I've got mine...you get yours the best way you can!

NEW iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Extreme is dual core

iMac (24-inch Mid 2007): About the 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor
You can order your iMac (24-inch Mid 2007) computer with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor. This is a dual-core, Intel processor with 4 MB shared L2 (level 2) cache, an 800 MHz frontside bus and it supports Intel 64 architecture.

Because this processor is a dual-core processor, the Apple System Profiler and About This Mac window identify the processor as "Intel Core 2 Duo."

For more information about the Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor, see Intel's product brief.
