because of playstation sales, but I’ve been doing my research and playstation sales are now leveling out and gamers don’t give a hoot about high definition dvds anyway. The strategy of merging gamers and HD-DVD watchers will definitely not, "Tip the scale". The real war is supposedly decided by the dedicated HD players and dedicated movie watchers. Two things are for sure. It’s still a toss up of who will win (despite what cnet articles you might have read). And BluRays better technology has nothing to do with who will. Remember betamax (the shame of sony) and minidisc. Better technologies that were left in the dust. So I would not be so quick to give out awards to BluRay just yet.
I was watching a news program that was discussing the Blu-Ray vs HD DVD war not long ago. Believe it or not, but they mentioned that if the pornography industry got involved in the war, meaning that they choose one format over the other (i.e. Blu-ray or HD DVD), it would be over for whichever one the porn industry didn't go with due to this industry being a multi-billion dollar industry. They also mentioned that the porn industry had a hand in the choice b/t betamax and VCR. Not sure were they got their info from, but interesting eventhough.
but I have heard that as well. And I also saw on one of those shows (greatest 80s tech show on TLC or Discovery, I can't remember now) that porn had a huge part in deciding VHS's victory.
I think that may have been the same program I saw. Weird how something like the porn industry can make such an impact. Guess it goes to show how big that industry really is given that it is usually a hush-hush topic.
I do believe the porn industry will be a big factor, but a lot of the articles I have read say that the porn industry will not. They were a deciding factor in the vhs vs betamax war, but are not suppose to be such a factor now because of computers. I guess most porn is downladed through computers now. There is actually a lot of interesting stuff going on with our current format war. HD-DVDs higher capacity disc, bluRay finding ways to bring production cost down, and all kinds of other improvements. The best of course being the hugh dropping prices. When or if there finally is a winner it would be really interesting to see what the deciding factors were. Maybe it will just come down to PR. Monster and Bose are prime examples of that ![]()
After doing research and purchasing an inexpensive $33 temporary DVD Player (Coby DVD 224 which I made region free for PAL & NTSC) I decided on Oppo 970 once I relaized they convert between PAL and NTSC and can play either disk on a good LCD TV via HDMI. Also the Oppo is Multiregion capbable which I need since I always try to get UNCUT versions of Exploitation movies and most of the truly uncut versions aren't available in NTSC or PAL region 0 or 1.
a natural nice possibility. The value factor is absolutely great. However, the low cost includes the unit being plastic. A Faroudja chip by itself is a good indication, but not the be all & end all. Value in a unit is also because of good thought been put into the internal processing.
I got an Oppo recently for an additional unit. It works ine in general, but I'd say my two Denon disc players (one fairly expensive & a cheapie) provide an even more crisp video & better audio for sure.
High def players have the format war to settle down & then let the prices get very affordable. Then enjoy one of them. Just one humble opinion.
