When you break it down HD DVD isn't really cheaper...

by paulndyment - 8/23/07 11:12 AM In reply to: HD-DVD is cheaper, and has better interactive features by RatherBeFlying

I don't think you know what you are talking about. Have you actually used Blu Ray's interactive features because they are just about the same. Look up the production cost per gigabyte of memory per disc: Blu Ray vs. HD-DVD. With some simple math you will find prices of $0.077 per GB on HD DVD SL media and $0.052 per GB on Blu-ray SL media.
HD-DVD is based on the same old technology as DVD... ask yourself this: Why did we do away with VHS?
Blu Ray is a NEW & IMPROVED version of the the standard format. Why would anyone settle for less?

Because of Star Trek...

A new version of ST-TOS with new computer graphics and new-recorded sound will be released in November on HD DVD. It's more redone than the new U.S. tv version...

HD DVD all the way

by thierrydan - 8/23/07 1:02 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

They are less restrictive then blu-ray and will grow in storage space. Not to mention, that i do not have to repurchase my entire collection against the wishes of sony and its cohorts.

Neither

by gslrider - 8/23/07 1:27 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm glad I'm in no rush to get either one. I'm even in no rush to get a 1080p LCD. My older Toshiba HDTV (480p, 1080i), with a Pioneer up-converting DVD player, suits me just fine. I won't lie, because I'm already impressed with 480p up-converted standard DVDs, I am tempted to go completely 1080p HD.

But with all things considering, ie. not very many HD channels available, prices (although dropping, and will drop still by the time I decide to go full HD) are still alot for me, and this HD DVD vs Blu-Ray thing, too much headache to deal with now. I'm on the fence on this one. Actually, I'm at home, enjoying my current set-up, with a drink in hand, and getting a back rub from my girl. And strolling every so often to the fence to see what's going on. Then back to my home.

Blu-Ray

by mini14gb - 8/23/07 1:50 PM In reply to: Blu-ray by Challkhmc

I like how the HD-DVD camp down plays the PS3 sales as though they should not count in the battle of the formats. I use my PS3 as a dvd/blu-ray player more than gaming. Stand alone players are great but why not get the PS3 instead and get a total media player? The $100 above and beyond a stand alone blu-ray player is a no brainer IMO. HD-DVD is fine but I think Sony will finally win a format war. I mean the Red Sox finally won a world series so why not Sony??

Blu_ray

by mini14gb - 8/23/07 2:01 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Just one more thing about Blu-Ray and PS3. PS3 on top of being a blu-ray player is now going to offer a TV Tuner/Recorder that can store movies to HDD for later viewing and can transfer them to the popular PSP portable. One more reason to buy a PS3/Blu-ray player over the HD-DVD xbox.

SONY REMEMBER THE BETAMAX

by scottrug - 8/23/07 2:09 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I do own Sony products. I have a DVD Players and a 55" Projection HD TV. I have a XBOX 360 and when the price of the HD-DVD player was lowered i bought one. So If I wanted to have a Blue-ray player it would be cheaper to buy a PS3 and thats not going to happen. If and when a combonation hd-dvd/blue ray player is at a normal price maybe I will get it. If you haven't learned from your past mistakes you will be doomed to repeat them again, I guess SONY is behind the learning curve.

I can understand all the Sony hate, however

by jostenmeat - 8/23/07 2:48 PM In reply to: SONY REMEMBER THE BETAMAX by scottrug

BD is a lot more than Sony!!! I also despise proprietary tech, but I think in this case its QUITE different. Here's a good current AVS thread, "Aren't you worried about Sony (price, proprietary technology)?"

Blu_Ray

by mattkenseth17 - 8/23/07 3:06 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I like Blu-Ray discs because they have a higher capacity than HD DVD. Given Sony's track record with format wars (BETAMAX v VHS), things look grim.

Blu Ray

by ridesearch - 8/23/07 3:11 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

HD may have the lead in features now, but sooner or later the number of features will come down to how much you can fit on the disk. And I see the Sony production as an incentive: Toshiba's got the cheap players, and they're cheap for a reason. To make them that far below expected price the players will have been developed quickly, and made on the fly. They work now, but we'll probably be seeing a lot of them dying before too long.

Blue Ray of Course

by Jefftech - 8/23/07 3:37 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Much better format, longer movie on a single disc, quality vs quantity, etc...
As well, the best studios are backing BD, Master & Commander, Day after Tomorrow, Castaway & on & on.. come on the release of the HDDVD (Bockbuster?) "Blades of Glory" gives you an idea of those 'other'studios'idea of a movie...give me a break Ha! Ha! Ha!

HD DVD

by haslum - 8/23/07 5:03 PM In reply to: Poll: If you had one choice, which format would you pick? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have seen HD and Blu-Ray, for me, HD produces a really good picture, like super life like, clear and brilliant--Blu-ray seems artifical, not real, over the top. This is why I hope HD wins the war.
