Why Is My Preference Not Even Listed

by DSaint - 7/11/07 5:39 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I purchased a JVC HD-ILA (LCOS - Liquid Crystal On Silicon) after careful scrutiny of other types of 1080p Displays. As a matter of fact, not only did the JVC FH-series 57" look demontrably better than the LCDs and Plasma models, but even outshone the Sony model using similar technology. It was reviewed by a few publications and praised as possessing a superior image quality to all the other sets they had tested under $5000.00.
My ONLY question is what do you have against JVC? Why have you not listed them in the main models people can vote on in this Poll?

Sony sxrd has the sharpest picture i have seen ,i was blown away by it ,even sharper than the panasonic plasma's,and i was a panasonic supporter for years.Guess i'm not the only one happy with sony ,look at the poll results ,sony by a landslide. And no the jvc did not out shine the sony ,I was leaning towards buying the 57 inch jvc -Ila,till i seen the 60 inch sxrd sony .

Totally Agree

by tqat25 - 8/22/07 9:29 PM In reply to: Why Is My Preference Not Even Listed by DSaint

I too own a JVC HD-ILA set. Mine has a 720p display and have not found a better hd picture anywhere. Black levels are excellent and even standard definition looks great. It seeems as I read the reviews by CNET that there may be some bias that comes into play when it comes to their reviews. The only negative, is there seems to have been some lamp issues with my model set. I personally have not experienced any lamp issues after almost a year. Regardless, JVC hd sets have a great picture and always seem to be omitted when it comes to reviews on this site.

TV Brand

by barrettjg - 7/11/07 5:40 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is a very complex question. I have been a TV servicer since 1965, and I have seen TV’s become such trash over the years, that I really do not have a preference at this time. I have personally owned RCA, Sony, and currently own a Toshiba. All of the TV’s that I have owned came to me through customers poor decisions not to have the chassis repaired. We give free estimates, and none of the sets had over a 90.00 dollar repair. My Toshiba 36 inch is 7years old, and one of the last good sets that they made. Phillips is about the worse set made today, parts are obsolete after 6 months, and have such poor definition, I honestly do not know how people can watch them. RCA was once the best set made great color saturation as well as a sharp picture with lots of depth. This is also true for older Sony’s, but not for today’s TV’s. We constantly see 36 inch flat tube Sony’s with bad CRT’s that cost more then a new set. LG is a brand that came out of the blue just a few years ago, and just try and get parts for them. Actually as I look over the list, Panasonic is one of the brands that I can find very little fault with. Good parts back up as well as sharp picture with depth. Samsung makes one of the best HD TV’s, in my opinion, I am sure everyone has a different opinion, but parts can be hit and miss.
It is too early to tell about the flat panel receivers, although I do see a trend that the LCD screens will not last as long as the plasma sets. They use an inverter board to convert a low current pulse into a high current voltage to light up the florescent tubes that back light the screen. These are high failure parts. We have several in the shop now, mostly from the home shopping networks, that can’t be fixed.
My suggestion is to have your old set repaired until the smoke has cleared past the 2009 cutoff date, when HD will be mandatory, and everyone will be totally confused, good luck.

Favorite Brand(s)

Have never had a Panasonic TV or any Panasonic devices I didn't like - quality and an outstanding TV PIX! Have a Pan 25" that is over 20 years and still a brillant, sharp picture. Have a 50" Pan HD - wonderful, bright, clear picture. Reliability, still unknown, have had only for 6 mos.
Had a 36" Sony Vega - also excellent. It's Panasonic or Sony - they are the best!

I like Runco TVs made in the good old USA

by thehifidoc - 7/11/07 5:47 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Mr. Sam Runco started making TVs in the San Francisco area nearly 20 years ago. He owns the trade mark on the phrase "Home Theater" When the first came out, only the wealthy could afford them, but today They have 42 inch Plasmas for as little as $3995.00 and 26 LCDs for as low as 1595.00 These things have the best picture bar none. The best part about them is that they make Non-HD programming look very nice as well. So if you really care about picture quality and you have a master card and you can make the payments call your local Runco Dealer, you will find as I did that there is nothing like it.

Sony of my owny

by Hoffyone - 7/11/07 5:48 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been a Sony man all my adult life. The first Trinitron I bought back in 1982 and had it or over 15 years when I gave it to my nephew who had it until it died 5 years later. Just picking a Sony up off the shelf and you can tell these things are made to last (HEAVY!)

I maybe purchasing a Samsung 52" Plasma here in the near future for our new home (Don't tell Sony). I feel that I am cheating on them. Sad huh?

SAMSUNG

by ice82 - 7/11/07 5:51 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The TV that I am using right now as a part-time monitor for laptop is Samsung 3251. This is a second Samsung I own and I have also owned Sony's CLD for a while.. but Samsung is the best!
Sony's quality is very good, but they are far too overpriced.
IMO, Samsung offers the best combination of top-notch quality and price.

Service techs perspective

by sordello - 7/11/07 5:53 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Panasonic is far and away the best value in almost every perspective. They make a reasonably priced set that for years has been amongst the most reliable made. When they do fail there are lots of service centers and the parts are reasonably priced.

Sony is also a excellent brand and has a lot of appeal but is not nearly of the quality that they built their reputation on in the 70's and 80's. Even then their parts were extremely expensive - sometimes outrageous. Even with this they make some top end equipment. My biggest problem with Sony is their tendency to make their equipment only work with sony accessories. Too proprietary!

Sharp and Toshiba have always manufactured a very high quality products although the service end has become a bit sparse and although parts are available they both went to single source distributors in the 90's - not always the best option.

LG... Now that is an interesting story! Does anyone remember Zenith. This is what remains of Zenith after the Goldstar takeover. Interestingly enough these seem to be excellent sets - The parts are available everywhere through Zenith parts network. They seem to be of very good quality and have an excellent picture. I think not a bad choice...

Most of all... Have Fun!

Sony

by pll911 - 7/11/07 5:59 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have bought Mistubishi's, Toshiba's, Sony and Pioneer. They all seem reliable, with Sony the most and it has the best internal audio system as compared to the rest. I do use my Bose audio system when I watch HD movies and the like, but can't be doing this all the time. Five of my TV's are now HD. It will be a long wait before the other 5 remaining flat CRT's die (4 Sony's & 1 Toshiba).

ProScan

by mnhammer - 7/11/07 6:30 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to TVs, what brand do you prefer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Back in 1999 I splurged and bought a 32" ProScan. It has been the best TV that I have ever owned, and the picture quality is still as good as that first day. I did have to have it serviced once, can't remember why, but it was only something very minor. I dread the day that I will finally have to replace it, but I am confident that it will last until I am required to go HD. Too bad that RCA decided to drop the line.

I also like ProScan

by Web Webster - 7/12/07 1:40 PM In reply to: ProScan by mnhammer

Although I'm a JVC fanatic, I have had excellent experience with ProScan as well. I have a 35-inch ProScan console from the mid 1990s that's gotta weigh a couple hundred pounds and is 53 inches tall. It's been relatively trouble free, the only exception being the few simple controls on the set itself, which I probably wouldn't use even if they did work. Since the remote has all the controls, it's fairly complicated. In order to compensate, ProScan thoughtfully included a second remote that has the same simple functions as the on-set buttons, so a guest can use the set without pushing the wrong button and screwing something up. The best part about this console is the sound quality. It's by far the best I ever heard in a TV set.
