There is an IP address conflic with another system on the...

by famousp - 8/22/07 8:41 AM

I recently moved into a new apartment complex that includes free internet. As far as I can tell, the entire complex is one giant LAN, with internet service provided by GRU.net.

The complex is brand-new and I was one of the first people to move in. The internet worked fine for the first week, but my wireless router broke during the move-in so I've been using a LAN cable. Everything worked fine.

After everyone else moved in and filled up the apartments I have not been able to connect to the internet through the connection in my room (I am actually connected to someone's random wireless router right now, but the signal is weak and slow). When my Local Area Connection connects, I cannot get an IP Address. Instead, I receive the error message:

"Windows System Error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network"

For the heck of it, I ran ipconfig and got these results:
ipconfig results
Local Area Connection Status Screen

I know there are several threads already dealing with similar issues, but they all seem to involve a recently installed router in someone's home or workplace. I have no access to the routers or switches in my network so I doubt that I'll be able to make any changes to them.

Any help that could be provided would be appreciated greatly.

System Info:
Dell Latitude D820 Notebook (about a year old)
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Network Card: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

For some reason CNET added their own address to the beginning of my links. The text links are:

Try

pinging 127.0.0.1 or localhost. If ok, ping the default gateway 192.168.11.1. If ok try, ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew.

Pinging

by famousp - 8/22/07 2:37 PM In reply to: Try by Darton Fury

I am not at home at the moment so I have not been able to ping those addresses. However, I tried ipconfig /release when I was at home and it did not work.

When I get home I will try pinging the address and post the results. Thanks again.

Working OK now

Don't know what happened, but when I got home tonight I managed to get a connection for the first time in a few nights. I'll make sure to post again if it all goes haywire, but for the moment I'll just be glad it works.

Never mind...

Accidentally connected wirelessly while messing around with connection settings and figured my connection was good again.

This time my computer appears to connect to the network. However, I am still not able to access the internet. Tried pinging, and got mixed results. Check them out at:

Still not sure what to do. If anyone can help please do; I'm tired of getting disconnected from this weak wireless signal I'm pirating.

It says that

your ip address is manually configured. If someone else had the same ip address, on the network, then I can see where the problem is. I have three computers on my network. Each time I connect, My computer finds me an ip address that's NOT being used.

Thanks

Actually just logging back on to say that I had found the problem - for some reason the computer set itself to manual mode - I had never touched those settings. What's more is that even after setting it back to automatic, it somehow kept reverting back to manual.

Finally on the fourth attempt it stayed on automatic and is working great now.

Thanks for the help from both of you.

If you

are going to manually configure, you need to select an address on the 192.168.11.xxx network, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Try a new Ethernet cable as well.
