I don't think anybody can squarely say, neither technology has any lack of marketing or money behind it (Sony behind one, Toshiba/Microsoft behind another (theres a lot of other major companies involved as well, but that gives you an idea that cash and marketing is no problem)). There was a theory that HD-DVD would take over with the launch of Vista, but Vista supports both with no problems, so that didn't come to fruition, PlayStation 3 plays BluRay, and hasn't been gaining the market share it was hoped to gain, Xbox360 plays HD-DVD and has done exceptionally well in the past few months...its hard to say really

Honestly I would say they'll both win, in a way, HD-DVD is a stop-gap product, its just DVD, enhanced, while Blu-Ray offers some better technology and larger future storage capacities over HD-DVD, which leads me to believe it has the potential to stay around longer.

As far as a PC drive I saw http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136124 the other day, LG is a good company, and that drive basically gives you everything, although it'll require a full PC built around it for home theatre (figure probably $1600 for the whole setup, and most of the money is in that drive). I'm sure similar drives are going to make it to the HT segment, however it may take some more time...

HD DVD and Blu Ray

by TheBoots - 8/21/07 3:19 AM In reply to: good question by ozos

My friend who works in Microsoft tells me that the HD DVD format was hatched by Microsoft purely to prevent Sony from gaining a position in the HD media segment because both compete very fiercely in the game console market. Assuming this is largely true, and combined with a history of suspicious intent on Microsoft's business model in the non OS area, I have stayed clear away from all non core Microsoft products. It seems their business model in relation to consumers is to dominate a sector until no competitors are left, then they begin to neglect us and worse, keep prices high (or not allow prices to erode as there are no alternatives eg Windows OS software). Further examples are the crappy browser after they killed Netscape (which by the way, consumers forget that Microsoft is still serving its "sentence" having been convicted), the ugly Xbox360 which they are throwing money at like there is no tomorrow just to kick Sony out so it can dominate our living room and start making us pay a "subscription", the horrible Zune which we do not even hear of now, introduced just because someone has found a business model that makes money and Microsoft in their usual culture, unabashedly tries to muscle in. I truly wonder what their shareholders think?

Shareholders? They don't like that the stock price has been

flat. But I presume they bought in to share in a giant money making machine. Typical shareholders aren't keying in on greenness, public service or philanthropy, but more like hoping greed benefits them.

(NT) Advantage: BluRay, but I'll wait for better prices.
