lines at edge of high-def picture

by midiexpert - 8/18/07 12:51 PM

Recently I purchased a Vizio 42-inch GV42LF HDTV, which has 1080p capability, etc. I have Verizon FIOS TV using a Motorola 6200 hi-def cable box. With the cable box set to display at 1080i (this is the maximum resolution possible, as opposed to 720p) I noticed first that standard def signals had some video noise at the top or bottom of the screen. The Vizio allows you to increase the vertical size which eliminated this problem. But on some hi-def channels and on some broadcasts, I notice that there is either a green line at the right edge of the screen, or a white line on the left edge. I can adjust the horizontal position to eliminate one, but not the other (I have seen both at times, but not commonly) and I'm guessing that this is due to lack of overscanning on the Vizio TV, so I am seeing the edge of the screen that is supposed to be hidden due to built-in overscan. It's annoying and not always fixable in it's entirety. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this problem that does not involve going back to 720p on the cable box? I have also contacted Vizio to see if there are any other settings on the TV that can alleviate this nuisance--the TV is otherwise absolutely wonderful and since it is considerably less expensive than other similarly configured TV's, I really want to keep it and see if there is any workaround for this problem. Any and all suggestions would be very much appreciated. There does not seem to be any menu within the Vizio that deals with overscan, and no way to resize the image (enlarge it) slightly from side to side, only from top to bottom (I hope I didn't reverse the terms horizontal and vertical). The cable box also does not seem to have any other settings pertinent to this issue, just the resolution via my HDMI connection, which is going directly from cable box to TV. Would any of the new AV receivers with HDMI have some way to take the incoming signal from the cable box and then adjust it before it goes out to TV? I would be willing to invest in a new receiver if this is the case, but I'd rather not, as my home theatre setup is working just fine as it is without incorporating HDMI into the equation. Thank you.
