Hey tom and molly and maybe Jason i guess (jk) Response to Philippe's email about the early viewing of the abc show caveman. Because my Father Works for Abc in the Commercial Air time department, he brought home a handful of dvd's with the pilots of a whole bunch of new abc shows including "Caveman". So yes me being the person that i am made my family watch it and im sad to say that the pilot was not as good as they wanted it to be. Apparently they are re shooting it because there was not enough character development so maybe it might go past 2 episodes. So hoped that helped =) love the show guys take it easy
The caveman-Geico commercials are the worst!
I like the old- "but there's good news! I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico!" ones.
Alex
the pilots to several new shows are available for download on a the bittorrent sites. usually the pilots are filmed several months in advance so that they can be brought to network execs who will view them and decide if its good enough to include in their lineup. somehow they are leaked onto the torrent sites and they can be viewed several months before the official season premiere, a lot of times the downloaded pilot is different from the official pilot due to recasting or reshoots. one example was smallville where there was another actress who played clark kent's mother in the original pilot. the powers that be of that show had a change of heart, hired annette o'toole and reshot all the scenes and what aired on tv was different than the original pilot showed to the network bosses.
I'm curious as to whether Geico needed to give some legal "OK" for a studio to develop a show that stars their advertisement mascots. What are they getting out of it? During the show, will there be constant plugs for Geico?
CAVEMAN DAUGHTER: Daddy, can I please go to the high school dance?
CAVEMAN DAD: I'm sorry, daughter. I absolutely forbid it.
CAVEMAN DAUGHTER: I hate you! Why can't you be as cool and flexible as Geico Auto Insurance? By switching to Geico, I saved enough money on car insurance to buy my prom dress!
Ooh, and maybe they could work the gecko into the show somehow. Like maybe the gecko is the family pet, but only the father can hear it talk. Or better yet, the Gecko only exists in the father's mind and he starts questioning his own sanity, like Gaius Balter or Ally McBeal.
Okay, I'm starting to like this show.
Not sure of the legal "OK" from geico, but i know that the copywriter of the spots, (and apparently a VP at the ad agency) is writing (or wrote, rather) the pilot. But, just the fact that they've been clearly established as "the geico cavemen" geico will get associated with them. so it's a plug, without an overt plug.
Which is good financially for geico, cause they won't have to fork over cash as far as i know.
That being said, i'm pretty sure it will be horrible. there are only two funny spots in that campaign, the first one where the dude yells, "not cool!", and the aiport one where he glides past the sign. when those dudes talk, it's just not funny for the 30 seconds of the spot, don't see why it'd be good to watch it for 20+ . . .
With a Tivo nation you are seeing seepage from adverts to product placement and soon blatent plugs. Caveman in the incarnation is from Geico so my bet is you'll see more seep.
Bob
but not in show advertising
I have some inside information regarding plotlines for the upcoming ABC series "Caveman". Warning - spoilers follow.
Pilot: - a typical run at "Introduce the Cast" (cro-magnon style, lots of grunts and groans, a plug or two for Geico)
Episode 1 "It Takes a Village": thin plot - a caveman community coming together, coupla cave-babies are born.
Episode 2 "Elmo's Fire": Elmo is exiled for defaulting on child support payments - despondent and feeling rejected, Elmo takes out his frustations by rubbing two sticks together (you can guess the rest).
Episode 3 "All you can eat for $4.95": After Elmo discovers fire, the tribe welcomes him back and they band together to hunt for wild Geico Lizards.
Episode 4 "The Bronze Age": the writers are still working on a seamless segue into this Season Finale.....
Keep up the great work BOL - you're both entertaining and informative.
I work at a large ad agency and also had early access to all the network pilots on DVD.
I actually like the caveman commercials a lot. I even went so far as to track down the song from the airport commercial and downloaded it off Itunes (Remind Me by Royksopp.) But after watching the pilot I can guarantee this show won't make it out of the first season. In fact, I expect it to get the axe well before that.
I love sitcoms. There's just too many serious dramas and serials on TV these days for my liking. But I haven't seen a truly great, original comedy pilot since My Name is Earl (the show itself has grown a bit staid of late but the pilot was absolutely brilliant.) I haven't watched all the network pilots yet though. Hopefully there will be a diamond somewhere in the rough.
thanks for the song info though. I found and downloaded it as soon as I read your post.
