He must really love his iphone:

The North Denver News reports that Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae, Colorado recently underwent “whittling” thumb surgery to better enable him to use the iPhone.
Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae is a big guy. So he has a hard time using the features on ever-shrinking user interfaces on devices like his new iPhone. At least, he did, until he had his thumbs surgically altered in a revolutionary new surgical technique known as “whittling.”
That's an expensive iPhone.
He just risked his life for a phone. ANY surgery poses the risk of death or permanent disability, from anesthesia reactions to clotting dysfunction.
I wonder if he died if his family would have a case against apple... oh no wait, apple would win because the patient was obviously psychotic. ugh.

It won't be long before phones have voice to text message so you don't have to type at all.
That said some folks could use some whittling on their tongues.
Text is not using your your voice, that's what a phone call is.
Voice Mail and Voice Messaging are related in the same way Email and Text Messaging.
I can access my voice message via a pop up vs. dialing in for the 'real deal'.
Text messages would still have a place just like telephones have not gotten rid of letters.
Just leave a voice mail if you don't want to type.
