Questions from beginner setting up home theater system

by jev55 - 8/7/07 4:35 PM

I am new to the home theater scene and have been trying to come up with a good setup. I have a Samsung 30inch CRT 1080i HDTV which I am very happy with. I have a small living room in an apartment and have decided on only using 2.1 sound. Right now I am using a Sony STR-DG510 receiver and two Polk Audio Monitor 50 floor speakers. I have been happy with every aspect of the setup except for the receiver. My biggest complaints are the lack of inputs on the receiver and the very poor video quality of the HDMI pass thru feature. Also a very big issue I'm having is the un-evenness of audio. When watching DVD's sound effects in movies will be overwhelmingly loud while vocal parts are very quiet. I'm using an Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD player added for DVD playback. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix these issues?

ONKYO TX-SR605 without reservations; seek a price of $379 to $399.
It's 7.1, but should last a lifetime as your system grows. There are many other great choices available; such as DENON, MARANTZ, NAD, etc.

Good shopping,

I was hoping to find something under $300, although if I have to spend more to get all of the features I need I will.

if the video pass thru sux, why not send the hdmi directly to the tv? Its a very common recommendation from the most regular of regulars here.

I haven't heard the Monitors, but I've heard several other Polk lines, including their best, and I find them to be very veiled. Whatever, veiled also has its advantages at times... Not ideal, but one experiment you can try is to use maximum compression anywhere you can set it. In the receiver (could be called "late night" or something), as well as in the Cable box and/or dish box which often have different compression settings. What this will do is to get ALL sounds a little closer to the same volume. Set both to maximum.

For what its worth. I hate compression, myself, but its the only easy experiment I could come up with for you. Im not sure that a new receiver would help out. However, a center channel would be much more promising. Then you can simply level adjust between the 3 channels.

PERSONALLY, I'D GO FOR BEST I COULD AFFORD................

THE TX-605 IS ONLY another hundred. On a limited income, I have to be careful about every major purchase to the cent. Seems like best buy to me; however there are more qualified posters on this FORUM than myself. Please listen to them.

You have some demanding needs, personally there are too many A/V/R's out there for me to make an absolute decision, but I think you'd be pleased with the ONKYO 605.

Best wishes,

Riverledge.

TRY THIS

Run all your vidio straight to the t.v and all your audio to the amp, Also I believe yoy stated that you are only using 2 speakers if so then run stereo only to the receiver. In closing awsome 5.1. sound in an apartment is usually a no no. I would not expand your sound system until you have your own place to live then add a good 5.1. amp and add your other speakers and boom boom sub steweee
