Hey I was wondering if anyone owned or had experience with the HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion. If yes then I have a few questions. Does it need any sort of data contract with a wireless company? If no then is a contract optional? I assume it plays MP3's and vids, but can it stream online videos/mp3's on websites? Can you download any feeds from the Internet? Is there TXT messaging? If yes then does it cost any monthly fee or charge per message fee? Is it compatible with AIM or any other IMing service? Is VoIP available? Is GPS good quality?
Please answer as many of the questions as you know. Any response will be helpful, wether an answer to some of the questions or an opinion. Thanks for your time.
1.) It is not a smartphone, just a standard PDA, so there are no contracts for cellular service, be it required or even optional. (It cannot be used as a cell phone.)
2.) The internet access is 802.11 b/g, meaning you must be within range of either a wireless network or WiFi hotspot that you are permitted access to. It's up to you to find such locations and ask the owner for permission to use their connection to the internet. If you're more than a few hundred feet from such a hotspot you cannot connect.
3.) Yes, it can stream multimedia content if you have an active internet connection.
4.) Yes, you can access RSS feeds, provided you install an RSS reader application.
5.) No, you cannot text message. Remember, this is not a cell phone. Hence there is also no fee.
6.) Yes, you can connect to AIM, Yahoo, etc, though you must download/install an IM client yourself. IM+ is one such option, but it's not free. Agile Messenger is another option.
7.) Yes, VoIP is available, but not all providers offer it and you must be within a hotspot to use it.
8.) Yes, the GPS receiver and associated maps are of good quality.
Hope this helps,
John
Well I think your post covered it all. Thank you very much on clearing all that up.
Can I use skype on HP's iPAQ rx5915 to make pc to phone (landline and cellular) calls????
Referring to this Skype KB article, the iPaq 5900 series only supports chat due to reported limited support for the processor.
Sorry. ![]()

Thank you very much. Your reply to my question will force me to look for another PDA with integrated GPS functionallity with which I can make Skype calls.
Ronnie Lanoy.
Dear John,
Considering the facht that Skype does not work on the rx5915 for making phone calls, can I instead use net2phone on HP's rx5915? Or is there any other VoIP provider that can work with the rx5915?
Best regards.
ronnie Lanoy.
I was wondering if there was any way to connect a web cam to this device?
You can't use a standard PC webcam, but there are plenty of SDIO webcams out there, many approaching 2MP. The prices, though, can be a little steep as some cross the $100 mark.
John
Thanks for the help....I have one more question for you....Is there any way to always stay connected to the internet...kinda like you can get a data card for a laptop?
There are two ways. The first is to use Bluetooth to link your PDA to your cell phone and connect through it. The other is to purchase an SDIO GPRS card, which also requires that you have a compatible cellular service/data plan. I should note, though, that such cards are hard to find and usually run close to $200, making Bluetooth a much more lucrative option.
Hope this helps,
John
I am considering buying an rx5900.
I am a technical man and understand the difference between "strong signal" and correct network settings.
There have been reports (see http://hongwuwang.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!84C5DF1A44B3163C!975.entry or http://www.mobileplanet.com/ft.aspx?k=77955) that setting up a WEP-protected network can be "buggy". What is your experience?
Also, how does the display read in sunlight?
Thanks,
Vic
I have one of these as well. I had no diffculty at all setting it up to work with my home wireless network, which has WEP encryption and MAC address control.
I also use it for internet access via bluetooth with my mobile phone, which nobody else seems to have mentioned (I am in the UK and use Vodafone GPRS). In my experience the GPS is a bit slow to start, but otherwise works fine.
just dont buy it. worst hp product ever.tried two both failed to respond properly.
