Why is Imac so difficult to use.... PLease read

How do I copy several tv programs and movies that I have recorded on DVD's to an external hard drive and still be able to watch it without using the original DVD?
I tried just copying/dragging what was on the DVD into folder but when I tried to view it on Front Row I got nothing. It showed just to folders, one called Video_RM and Video_TS. What happened...did I do something wrong?
What must I do to make this thing work? PLease be specific. BTW, I have a 24in Imac.

I've done that and played it with VLC PLAYER. Now if the DVD is copy protected that's an entirely different matter and the answer to that is... it's not supposed to be easy.
