IE7 and Mozilla can't browse internet...WMP can??!!??

by boochkn - 8/1/07 3:25 PM

I haven't messed with Vista much, but a co-worker needs my help. Her laptop can connect wirelessly to two different networks. Once connected I can resolve host names and ping internet servers. When I open IE7 it says "website found, waiting for reply" and that's as far as it gets...eventually there's a page not found error. I have tried many, many websites and none will come up. I then opened Windows media player and went to the Urge tab...it came up fine, McAffee even pulled it's updates down. So I installed Firefox and guess what? It acts just like IE7. I have disabled the connection and re-enabled...I have disabled the unused ethernet card. I just don't understand how Vista works well enough to solve this one.

Going into IE Or FireFox under the connection and LAN/Network settings ticking on Auto Detect Proxy setting for this network?

There does seem to be an open issue for some and there are other tries to get it to work if this one does not. We didn't think to test other programs so am glad to hear that they worked so it is a browser issue.

Yes I made sure the 'Automatically detect settings' was checked...I even tried it unchecked. I also tried turning off the protected mode and then restored all browser defaults. I also disabled the firewalls but nothing yet.

Try disabling the new IPv6 protocol. I am not on my Vista laptop right now but I believe I found this in the network properties settings. This again did not work for everyone.

Our Vista laptop worked fine on two different home routers one was open and one was WEP protected so I had to add that but when it went to a hotel one it would not go online.

Being able to see the Network, Connect to the Network but then not be able to use it is quite frustrating to say the least. I must say I have had this happen traveling with my XP laptop also tho, usually because when I opened Internet Explorer it didn't give me the option to log into that network and it wasn't an open one.

Exact ******* thing happened to me. I eventually figured it out that Mcaffee had blocked all internet browsing abilities when it updated. I uninstalled it Mcaffee and got another Anti-virus(Which I already Planned on doing) After I uninstalled it firefox worked. You may have to restart after uninstalling mcaffee.

McAffee was the issue...pretty great product to still allow WMP to access the internet. Stupid bloatware.
