Stereo Bluetooth Headphones

by dwdawson - 8/5/07 7:15 PM

Does anyone if the make a single earpiece stereo bluetooth headset? It would be mono, of course I know it sounds strange; why do you want stereo to mono, but I want to hear my music through my single earpiece. IT is ok that it is mixed to mono, but I can still have one ear open to drive, talk, etc and talk on the phone.
So far I have not found such a product and I was wondering if a company even makes one?

Listen to music using mono piece

From what I understand (cannot confirm) on what I have read regarding the Jabra BT8010 stereo/mono headphones, if you purchase just the mono piece and not the stereo piece (Verizon sells the pieces separately instead of pairing them together), it should work how you want it to, without needing the stereo piece. Give it a shot.

Stereo bluetooth music to single mono earpiece

After purchasing the Jabra BT8010 Stereo/Mono Bluetooth Headset, I can now confirm that you this device allows the user to listen to music from a single earpiece if desired, and switch to phone mode and vice versa. Simply, do not attach or purchase (if sold separately) the 2nd stereo unit for the other ear, if you do not intend to use it. It's that easy!

Plus, what's great about this is that you can listen to music and look like your on a call all day instead of enjoying music (in case walking around with stereo headphones all day makes you look like a slacker). :-D

BT8010 does not combine stereo channels into mono...

No, it's not that easy. He was asking for one that can mix BOTH left and right stereo channels into mono. The BT8010 does not do this as tested out of the box. I haven't checked my firmware version or updated but a Google search reveals that this remains the case. The mono-only A2DP-compliant (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile - AKA Stereo Bluetooth) BT8040 does combine both channels but, despite the claims on the box, there is no AVRCP support (Audio Video Remote Control Profile).

The BT8010 has been discontinued but can still be found cheaply at Fry's Electronics ($40; seen for $30 after rebate)... well, cheap for a CID Profile (Caller ID) BT headset. The BT8040 seems to have been discontinued about a week or two ago, likely due to the false claims on the package.

The 8bananas.com S100 stereo Bluetooth headset has a detachable earpiece and I was told in an email that it will route both channels through the main earpiece when the secondary in-ear bud-style one is disconnected. That said, I still didn't trust the second-hand info* from the email message and so I just decided to get a BT8010 rather than spend $75 to test their claims. I will see if I can wire it to do stereo or something.

For what it's worth, I work a security job and thought I needed stereo in one ear because I needed to hear my two-way PTT Motorola radio, but the 8bananas people pointed me to a product on what I believe to be a sister site (http://www.closeout.com/db-blucomm-k1.html). 22moo.com is their parent site. Actually, I have to listen for alarms and the phone on most shifts, so the mono BT idea is still top priority.
