How much did you pay for your last laptop?

by cjones2010 - 8/3/07 12:44 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I paid about $1500 in May 2006 for a 17" Toshiba w/ 1.73 Intel Centrino processor, only 512mb ram and 120 mb hard drive. Also has built in card reader,dvd/cd reader and writer, etc.. I paid more b/c I bought it through one of the TV shopping networks on 5 value payments. I saw the same cpu new on ebay a couple of months ago and it sold for about $650. It stil works, but is SO slow to boot everything up..plus I am hard on my electronics. I need one of the spill and drop proof ones! :-)

Toshiba Satellite A100 Laptop - No problems

by Whiskey01 - 8/3/07 1:28 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite A100 a year ago for $700 at Staples. They also threw in a $40 value router for the $700. I have no complaints so far. I had a Toshiba Tecra for many years prior to this one and I was happy with it as well so I am a Toshiba fan. The Satellite A100 came with Windows XP Home Edition. It's Intel Celeron 1.7 Ghx processor. ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Series Graphics card, 448 MB of RAM, Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-841S, Toshiba Hard disk drive MK8032GSX 80GB, Synaptics PS/2 port Touchpad, Toshiba Software Modem, 56K, Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adaptor, Realtek RTL8139/8210X Family Fast Ethernet NICand 17" screen.

Nice machine no problems.

Look how far PC prices have come down. I could see a no frills laptop at only a 150 bucks.

700$ plus tax

by 7aji88 - 8/3/07 7:11 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It was a HP ZV6201cl it has 2.0 GH AMD Atholon64, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, and a 128MB ATI 200m gc. It was good back then (one and a half year ago), but now you can get these faster dual core laptops for way cheaper price, but I'm not buying a new laptop because all what you need is a one decent laptop for school or travel and your real station is your desktop which is way cheaper and upgradeable.

With or without accessories?

by Commandoclone87 - 8/4/07 7:39 AM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Steven from Canada

Last March, I bought a gateway MX7525 from my local Futureshop. Just the laptop itself was $1399.00 + 15% tax rate equaling $1608.85. Which at the time was not bad for getting a laptop with 128MB of dedicated GPU memory.

Now if you include accessories such as an 400GB external HDD, wired gaming mouse, an upgrade to 2GB of ram, a copy of Windows Vista (home premium upgrade), a wireless controller and receiver, a 21" monitor, carrying bag, antivirus (yearly subscription), a web cam, speakers, and the three year guarantee, the cost was more like $4000.00 and rising because of the antivirus

Is that in Canada $ or US $?

Are you happy with what you got for what you paid?

Sounds like things are a lot less expensive here in the US.

$699 for my used eMachine

by rebekahsue - 8/4/07 8:27 AM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought my refurbished eMachine laptop for $699. 60 gig hard drive, 512 RAM (more than enough for my Dragon voice recognition software. I'll be getting an external drive for my photos and my articles, so that, when I travel, I won't have to risk their loss.

The only expense, beyond DSL and electricity, has been a short that had to be repaired twice. Laptops are, unfortunately, disposable technology, or very nearly so, these days. I think it's holding up very well for a rebuilt that's been in MY possession for over three years, and I don't know how long its previous owner had it.

Its protection (antivirus, etc.) is all freeware, and I checked CNET's reviews before I downloaded anything. Not one problem, there.

The laptop has been to Vegas and to Los Angeles. It's published several articles and has written an amazing unpadded resume that got a friend his dream job. It's edited two doctoral theses and is on its third. It's had countless photos dumped and edited on it. I wrote my CNET description and have maintained a presence on three blogs with that laptop. I've tracked down old friends and made new friends.

(I also have a desktop that another ex had built for me. I smoke next to the desktop but very seldom next to the laptop.)

I had custom photo labels of my fiance and his toddler on it. When said fiance showed his true colors, I covered the photos with pink fabric = a DIY pink laptop at a fraction of the cost, and it goes with the pink laptop backpack that was purchased to support Breast Cancer research. (I bought sign vinyl - clear - on eBay - several yards - for a small price, and cover the laptop and its pattern du jour, to protect it. The idea came from a motorcycle detailer.)

If I had to give up every electronic toy but one, my laptop would remain.

I paid a little over 1300 for a new gateway 7125C lightweight tablet pc - so far so good - this is my second gateway table - the first is still going strong just heavier so I am giving this one a try... Gateway has great product - it the customer service (or the lack of) that kills their ratings....

Received my nicely configured XPS m1210 as a winner of a contest Dell sponsored last summer.
Great little system; the model's replacement, the new M1330, looks even nicer.

1299.99 - Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347

by rkzander - 8/4/07 9:37 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

We got our Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347, at Best Buy where they did a price match to Amazon.com, who had the lowest price at the time. They also matched Circuit City's Free printer and laptop bag by giving us that amount off of a laptop bag of our choice and a wireless router. We chose the router, as we did not need a printer. The laptop is loaded! Too many features to list. The 17" screen is awesome! The Harmon Kardon speakers sound great, too! The number pad to the right of the keyboard was a plus. The fingerprint reader works pretty good! It has a lot of great features. The battery time is not very good, though. We will upgrade the battery eventually. The laptop is very fast using the wireless. We are impressed! It has a very solid construction. And the no-fault Best Buy service contract is a great deal! It was nice to have them optimize the laptop for us and take out all of the unwanted free trials. This is my husband's first computer and he is having a lot of fun with it. So far, he loves it! A computer guy in town recommended Toshiba. Another thing that lead us to buy a Toshiba was reading comments from other Toshiba owners about Toshiba's tech support. It is 24/7, toll-free, and you can understand what they are saying! They actually speak English! A rare thing these days! The only thing we wish it had is Windows XP Pro, which I have on my desktop. We see some good things about Vista, but time will tell. We have had it for only a week now. We don't regret the purchase at all!

I wish I could get away with the $150 laptop...

by smartipants - 8/4/07 10:06 PM In reply to: How much did you pay for your latest laptop? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Once I configure for my graphic needs (maxed out RAM, super-huge hdd, etc.), my $150 laptop would be up in the $1200 to $2000 range. I bought an IBM ThinkPad four years ago, immediately added upgrades and peripherals, and it's still going strong with lots of TLC. My second laptop (3-year-old iBook 12") was bought used for $60 and is a real little work-horse. I toss it into my carry-case, and take it with me. It has only light versions of some of my software, but it's good for note-taking in class and quick look-ups online. Once I got rid of the big clunker of a desktop PC, I decided I'd never go back. Only laptops from now on! :o)
