Another quickie on shielding

So if I have a six foot component cable and only need to run two foot. Can I wrap it in a coil or will it interfere with itself?

Just wrapping it isn't enough. You need to provide a place for the stray current/interference/whatever he is trying to do, to drain. Connect the shield to the third wire/ground on the power cord or to the metal chassis of the equipment.
