Laptops are pretty useless compared to a nice desktop. I hate the screens, the slowness, the useless and awkward mouse pad, the constant recharging, just to name a few things. I have had to use them on the job for field use, but could never use one for home or fun use.
"I hate the screens"
This is the trick of buying a laptop, you've got to be aware that an expensive laptop doesn't mean a good screen, but a cheaper laptop might have a really good screen, comparable to a desktop screen. Mine has a really good screens.
"the slowness"
Don't you realize that the same part being used in desktop could also be used in laptop (although desktop parts is much hotter and less energy efficient). Mobile CPUs is as fast as a normal CPUs, only less hungry on power and dissipate less heat. Probably you're experiencing slowness in your laptop because you're using a very small RAM or lacking a decent graphic card. Laptop with a decent graphic card is usually quite expensive, that's what you got to consider, with laptop you'll have to invest more money than in a desktop.
"the useless and awkward mouse pad"
Have you ever heard of USB mouse? You could choose a mini mouse if you want a compact, small mouse that don't take much bag space. But most laptop bags are usually much bigger than the laptop itself, so you could actually bring a full-sized mouse with convenience.
"the constant recharging"
Some laptops provide an additional external battery slot which could extend the usage life of the battery. And newer laptop are much energy efficient, and newer batteries have a much better capacities.
I paid $399.00 for a T30 IBM Thinkpad.
we gave her a 12" Powerbook G4. $2000 for this little Mac that sports a DVD burner. That's been 3-1/2 years ago. It's been through everything she could muster and a 6 month stint with me (Dad) in the dusty, dirty dirt of Iraq and has never missed a lick. Well worth the money as I'll likely get her a new Mac laptop to take her through college and take the old 12" job for myself. --Ray
Old Latitude CP for my sister to do word possessing with. That's all it does. I run Xubuntu on it.
Around $799. I got a very good deal. It is new (not second, not refurbished) Compaq Presario V3221AU AMDX2 1.6Ghz 1GB Vista Home Basic, with a free memory upgrade to 1GB which I took and a bonus printer which I don't take and reduce the price $25 further (so it become $774).
never go back!
Instead of in a very expensive laptop, the PALM handhelds have the same power and their mobility is full, of course I am speaking about the Palm treo and newer models, which have of course documents to go, mobile opera, and so on software. Only then You realize that having a fair good desktop pc and a palm is all what You need, You won't need a laptop (specially when You need to plug it in to recover power).
Oh and by the way, newer models include, camera, mps player, higher memory, and has a bilt in cell phone, so why a laptop is needed?
Palm can't do anything laptop could. An Interior Designer would require, for example, to create a 3D model of the room for his/her next client, while s/he is on the way to meet them.
Other more common scenario is a marketing staff, which is on the way to do a presentation on his/her next huge buyer, and are going to do a final tweaking to his/her PowerPoint, which s/he just remembered that morning. Borrowing the Buyer's computer to tweak the presentation would give a very bad impression, and bringing his/her own laptop would avoid cases where a presentation which has been prepared for weeks is undisplayable, because the client's computer is unavailable (they don't have one or it's being repaired or anything). Also working with own laptop is more comfortable than borrowing client's computer.
Not all scenarios could be handled by the desktop on your home, and the palm in your pocket.
I am disabled, and I can't sit at a desk for any length of time without hurting so much that I want to curl up and die. I use a lap desk and put a laptop on it, and with my wireless mouse, it's PERFECT! A PALM product is ENTIRELY too small and doesn't have nearly enough functionality. I, and nearly all of my disabled friends, need "something in the middle" -- and that's a laptop! They are LIFESAVERS for us! I think we're keeping the laptop companies in business! ![]()
a Dell Inspiron 6000 purchased a year ago
Hello, where exactly did you get this at that give away price?
Either it is a mistake on my part, or somebody hacked into my account. Therfore, for security issues, I just now changed my password.
I spent just about 1850 on my last laptop - a Toshiba - which I had custom built.
Except for being forced into Vista as the OS, I love it - 17" screen, fastest laptop processor available, big HD and 2GB RAM(soon to be 4GB)
