Buyer's remorse? Yamaha htr-5930 vs. Onkyo tx-sr504

by ndurantz - 7/30/07 8:00 PM

Just looking for some opinions. I bought the HTR-5930 thinking it had Dolby Digital EX and DTS Neo:6. I then realized that I read the description wrong! I purchased it months ago, so well outside the return/exchange period. I am toying with the idea of selling it on Ebay - hoping to get around $100 for it and buying the Onkyo since it does have more sound processing capabilities. I would end up being out about $100 (Paid $200ish for the Yamaha, sold for $100ish and buy the Onkyo for around $200), but I would get what originally wanted. My question is whether it is worth it? I probably won't upgrade again for another 5 - 10 years. Onkyo and Yamaha comparable? Thoughts on which is a better receiver? Sound quality is the most important to me. Thanks for any input.

You should be fine?

I believe the one important thing that the Yammy has over that Onkyo is the 5.1 ANALOG inputs. Most dvd players today can decode Dolby or DTS internally.

The only thing you need is a dvd player with those analog 5.1 (6-channel) outputs. All of the Oppo's appear to have them.

In fact, if you get a hi-def player, you can still get HD audio simply using analog interconnects to your Yammy.

Keep the receiver. If you don't have analog outputs on your present dvd player, wait a few months to see a brand name Blu Ray player come down to $300. Some of them are said to upscale regular dvd's quite well.

Thanks, but confused

Okay. Maybe I need a little education from you. Are you saying if I run the sound through the analogs, I can get 6.1 DTS Neo or D.Digital EX performance? I thought the processor needed to be there to create the phantom rear speaker. Also, the Onkyo does have 7.1-channel analog inputs. Sorry if I am missing something. Like I said. Looking for a little education!

you are talking about matrixing. Ah. Ya, you'll need a new receiver, as far as I know*.

only fyi/for your reference, the Panasonic BD players have 7.1 analog outputs. However, if DTS-ES 6.1 i sent via analogs only, I believe the rear channel is downmixed into the surrounds. People hook both the coax/optical and the analogs to get the best of both the older and newer formats.

In your case, yes I think getting a new receiver is the best idea.

I appreciate your reply and clarifying. In your opinion, do you feel onkyo and yamaha are of similar quality? I have never heard a bad word about yamaha, but on occasion about onkyo. I would appreciate your thoughts.

I honestly don't know

Harman Kardon has their fans. I read one person recently state that Yamaha has a brighter hi end, and that HK might be warmer. In only comparing Onkyo and Denon, the first being warmer, and the latter being clearer (maybe brighter?). As the year's end will near, you should more receivers capable of decoding the new formats. You probably don't care, and probably don't have good reason to care either. But for this reason, I might lean towards Onkyo just to have them, + the Audyssey feature. We all have the things we want. Some just want to make sure there's a phono input. Lastly, even if these receivers might have different characteristics, there isn't any best; one might match better for YOUR speakers to YOUR ears...

To be honest, ALL of the brands have a LOT of fans. fwiw, another well versed fellow stated a refurbed Onkyo 804 as a sweet spot deal. Iono, Im sure you'll be happy with most anything. I think the look of Denon is the sexiest, for whatever that is worth! Then again, some models are known to have impossible translations (even incorrect) from Japanese...

I appreciate all your input. I have a former roommate that was quite the onkyo fan. I think I will check in with him to see how his has held up. Thanks again!
