A: The hard drive speed
by Dan_Ackerman - 8/2/07 11:59 AMwill basically have zero effect on your everyday life, unless you're editing video (and even that's a maybe.) The much bigger difference is the 17-inch screen vs. a 13-inch screen -- those are two completely different computing experiences!
Q: A friend has a Dell, which has had a heat problem, and is now under extended coverage via a class action suit. The laptop has needed repair on three occasions, and they are worried what will happen after the extended coverage lapses.

I always like to point out that most laptops are pretty much made of the same parts. The most important thing is design/feel/comfort. So just pick the one you dig the most.

by Dan_Ackerman - 8/2/07 11:45 AMUnless you want to spend a lot, I wouldn't wait around for SSD drives. They pretty much top out at 63GB right now, but they add $600 or more to your system price. But -- it's totally where laptops are going in the next few years.

I have been researching which laptop I would Like to buy for about a week now. I have been reading all sorts of reviews and videos trying to make the best choice. to name a few I have looked at... XPS 1710 XPS 1330(just recently) Alienware, Toshiba satli. and many more. I always use Cnets reviews when buying things and it usually plays a big role in which products I buy. I have a solid 2k to spend and I could possibly spend around 500 to 1000 more if it really makes sense(I also get about a 12% to 15% off the list price thru my business). I would really like for my laptop to have some sort of protection plan for accidents(I think most comp. have this). This is very important to me b/c I don't want to have to worry about my investment going to waist. I will more than likely be using vista so I have been looking at laptops with 2gbram. I had always thought that size didn't matter to me.(if I have to sacrifice portability for performance, thats not a big deal) the only reason I looked at the XPS1330 was for fun and it seemed when I customized the system that it was around the same price range as the 1710 but with way more sleek design.(making me question). I like to play video games on my 360 but have been looking to be an occasional PC gamer. Not a 24/7 gamer like I use to be. so gaming is important but it doesn't have to be the best. I also do a little pictures and am looking to get more into video editing(nothing big). I would be using the laptop at home, on the road, and around town. But I carry a big backpack already so throwing a laptop in there will not bother me at all. Battery life is not a must but a plus(i already plan on buying an extra battery) so that I can use it fow a few hours(plane) w/o plugging in. I am a very indecisive person and am still not sure what laptop I should get. I am open to anykind of laptop(mac?) with a protection plan available. when you buy a computer from dell they give you a billion options for it, including some "options" that only give you one choice. but there was no warning that something had changed. have you heard of this new express card slots? what's the difference and don't you think since the slot looks identical in pictures of the laptops that there should be some kind of warning?

There are even two different sized of Express Card slots. On the bright side, you can get pretty much anything you'd need a PC card for as an Express Card.

by Dan_Ackerman - 8/2/07 11:33 AMPlenty of people have made the Mac switch since Apple added Intel CPUs to their systems -- which makes it possible to also run Windows, thereby easing the culture chock of switching. Limitations depend on the software you want to use (you may not want to buy Photoshop for the Mac is you already own a PC version), or things like the lack of a right mouse button (you can work around this -- touch the touchpad with two fingers and click the button, it's kind of like a right click in many apps). Of course, the biggest Mac drawback for some people is a lack of support for games -- although that's getting better. (And now we'll sit back and wait for the first response from an angry Mac fan…)

by Dan_Ackerman - 8/2/07 11:27 AMWell, you've got a lot of options out there. If you're looking to make your first Well, you've got a lot of options out there. If you're looking to make your first foray into laptop-land, here are a few key things to keep in mind:
The most important thing to note is that for the most part, all these laptops have the same or similar parts inside, at least within their general categories (gaming, etc.). There's basically no laptop you can buy today that won't work fine for Web surfing, working on Word documents, e-mail, etc. Therefore, once you figure out how much you want to spend and what size laptop you want, it mostly comes down to feel and design.
I see a lot of other questions on the same topic, so I'll go into some of the details in a little bit.
Q: Apple MacBook Pro

by Dan_Ackerman - 8/2/07 11:22 AMI think it's pretty cool that you can run both operating systems on your MacBook. That being said, you only need to do it if you need a PC-only program for something, or if you simply prefer the Windows interface. Parallels is cool, but it runs, you guessed it, in parallel with the Mac OS, so your performance may suffer.
Boot Camp avoids that, but you need to reboot to switch between Windows and Mac. Oh, and you'll need some kind of official copy of XP or Vista.
Q: HP Lap-top Blu-ray Drive?

When I had to return the review unit to Apple, she went right out and purchased her own black MacBook from the Apple store in Soho. It's now her main computer, and we haven't had any trouble with it, although I've read about some problems with early runs of the white version.

Laptop battery drain while turned-off
I have an Asus VBI laptop model s96j/z96j. Whenever I fully charge the batteries and leave the laptop unused for 2 weeks, all the juice a are gone. Why is it so...?

Old laptop
i have a old toshiba laptop which will randomly stick with no functions working. I after i could not figure what was happening i got a pro to fix it. sad to say it was the motherboard that was damaged. Being too expensive to repair i my question is if i could use my old HD in my newer gateway laptop. It is the same size and i tryed already but it didn't work. can it ever work or will it never work together.

Sony laptop batteries...
I bought a Sony Vaio PCG-K13 laptop in 2005. It was ok at first, but the battery now lasts a ridiculously short amount of time. Fully charged it says it's at 100% (3 hours, something mintues). In less than one minute, it changes to 84% (2 hours and a few minutes). In less than 20 minutes, I've got to plug it in or it will turn off. I've noticed the same thing with a brand new $2300 Sony Vaio laptop that I was experimenting with. Are all batteries used by Sony such "liars", or am I having some bad luck?

Vista - Activate or not !?!?!?
I've been using Vista since April. But... have not activated it yet. Because the hardware at the time was also quite new (but Vista certified) and I wasn't confident that the system was 100% stable. Today the system is 101% stable, but... Vista, well I think it's risky to say that it's OK, like my XP machines. Some glitches here and there tend to remind me all too much of beta 1.

Till when does one postpone activating their software until they feel comfortable with it, because the risk of problems with HW or SW, after activating it and formating and reformating and requesting new activations, seems a bit annoying and obviously something to avoid???

I was planning on buying either the Apple MacBook or the Sony CR Series laptop. But I read in a review in NotebookReview.com that the battery is so loose that the laptop goes off if you tilt it backward. What is your opinion on this one and is Cnet planning on reviewing it any time soon.

What is wrong with my laptop
I have a Gateway MX6425 with AMD Turion 64 Mobile technology ML-34 1.79GHz and 960MBof RAM. But i found over time it started to slowdown. So i used Ccleaner and scanned for viruses with McAfee and cant seem to find the problem. also i got a 3 errors saying my memory was going bad. could that be the hold problem.

Why So Slow?
Hi there, for the past couple of days, my MacBookPro (120GB HD, 2GB RAM, 15", Mac OSX 10.4.10) is starting up and performing quite sluggish. Start up time was harsh, and using programs were slow as well. This has just started happening. Ive been looking for sort of a Defragment program for Macs but no luck so far...

Dell XPS 1330 or other?
I am on the ever growing back-log of customers waiting for their Dell XPS 1330 to ship. Since I have all this time to wait and think, is there another laptop comparible to the XPS 1330? I was looking at the MacBook Pro but I'm not sure if I want to make the jump to Mac OS. Any suggestions?

Solid State drives
I love the idea of solid-state drives. However, there are only offered with 32 gb of memory. Should i buy a laptop now, or should i wait until solid state drives are made in 128 gb (which is enough for me)

How do you make a USB flash drive bootable
Is there a way to make either a USB flash drive or HD bootable? I have my laptop hard drive partitioned into an 8 gig C drive and the remainder as a D drive. I wanted to backup the C drive to either an 8 Gig USB flash drive or to an external USB HD, so if my laptop HD fails, I could simply plug in either the flash drive or the external HD and reboot to keep working. On Western Digital's web site, they say its possible but don't support it, so they don't give any information on how to make an external HD bootable.

I have been researching which laptop I would Like to buy for about a week now. I have been reading all sorts of reviews and videos trying to make the best choice. to name a few I have looked at... XPS 1710 XPS 1330(just recently) Alienware, Toshiba satli. and many more. I always use Cnets reviews when buying things and it usually plays a big role in which products I buy. I have a solid 2k to spend and I could possibly spend around 500 to 1000 more if it really makes sense(I also get about a 12% to 15% off the list price thru my business). I would really like for my laptop to have some sort of protection plan for accidents(I think most comp. have this). This is very important to me b/c I don't want to have to worry about my investment going to waist. I will more than likely be using vista so I have been looking at laptops with 2gbram. I had always thought that size didn't matter to me.(if I have to sacrifice portability for performance, thats not a big deal) the only reason I looked at the XPS1330 was for fun and it seemed when I customized the system that it was around the same price range as the 1710 but with way more sleek design.(making me question). I like to play video games on my 360 but have been looking to be an occasional PC gamer. Not a 24/7 gamer like I use to be. so gaming is important but it doesn't have to be the best. I also do a little pictures and am looking to get more into video editing(nothing big). I would be using the laptop at home, on the road, and around town. But I carry a big backpack already so throwing a laptop in there will not bother me at all. Battery life is not a must but a plus(i already plan on buying an extra battery) so that I can use it fow a few hours(plane) w/o plugging in. I am a very indecisive person and am still not sure what laptop I should get. I am open to anykind of laptop(mac?) with a protection plan available. i bought a new dell laptop for our COO, installed all apps and then went to put a pcmcia card into it and it wouldn't go in. i went onto the dell chat and the following transpired:

Does Boot Camp really work?
I've read from various sources that Boot Camp allows Windows to run just like it would on any other computer. I've tested out Paralells, and that (at this time) does not support Aero in Vista becuase Paralells limits the system resources. will Boot Camp allow Vista full access to system resources so that the Aero feature will work? (assuming 128mb dedicated video memory)

Back to school laptop
I am going to be a sophomore in college. I learned last year my heavy old 9 pound laptop does not cut it with going class to class. I have been looking at lighter ones but they all come with intels x3100 graphics does it work fine with vista. I was told at the stores that vista is very graphics hungry. could you clarify? Thanks

laptop to replace desktop
Hi, I want to get a laptop to replace my desktop for when we are traveling. I know nothing about laptops. I've heard they perform slower than desktops.
