The XPS 1710 has 72 and the XPS 1330(i think only allows the 5400rpm HD, do you think the 1710 is worth getting for this reason. THanks
will basically have zero effect on your everyday life, unless you're editing video (and even that's a maybe.) The much bigger difference is the 17-inch screen vs. a 13-inch screen -- those are two completely different computing experiences!
The laptop has needed repair on three occasions, and they are worried what will happen after the extended coverage lapses. Is there any way to get Dell to just replace this with a laptop that doesn't have this built-in time bomb?
Hey Dan , Im looking at a budget laptop with decent performce i have about $1000 to spend i was looking at the 1420 with the nvedia card? any other recommendations?
Is getting a Blu Ray drive or an HD DVD laptop woth the extra price tag or should I hold off and buy a stand alone player once the so-called format war is over?
Anyone needing super-hi-res movies on a tiny laptop screen.
Like the title says, Macbook pro 2.4 ghz or dell xps 1330
Both are pretty groovy. go to the Apple store, then go to some other big box electronics store, tey 'em out and buy based on feel/look. I always like to point out that most laptops are pretty much made of the same parts. The most important thing is design/feel/comfort. So just pick the one you dig the most.
Hi,
I was planning on buying either the Apple MacBook or the Sony CR Series laptop. But I read in a review in NotebookReview.com that the battery is so loose that the laptop goes off if you tilt it backward. What is your opinion on this one and is Cnet planning on reviewing it any time soon.
Thanks.

India.
On the battery for my TZ150 -- but so far it hasn't shut itself off -- never heard of anyone having that problem.
I heard that Vista still has a few bugs it has to fix... is that true? should I wait a bit longer or just go ahead and upgrade?
Just wait until you eventually buy a new one -- then you'll have Vista. don't bother with doing an upgrade on your current machine.
I have a Gateway MX6425 with AMD Turion 64 Mobile technology ML-34 1.79GHz and 960MBof RAM. But i found over time it started to slowdown. So i used Ccleaner and scanned for viruses with McAfee and cant seem to find the problem. also i got a 3 errors saying my memory was going bad. could that be the hold problem.
that starts up with the system. Go to the run menu, type in "msconfig" and look under the startup tab -- you may find a ton of programs (napster, itunes, demo software) eating up resources. Check out this handy "clean your laptop" video (starring yours truly) for a more detailed explanation: http://www.cnettv.com/9710-1_53-28721.html?k=%22insider%20secrets%22&tag=cnetfd.vid
hello dan i have a question about memory upgrades on laptops. i want to know what would happen if i upgraded my laptops memory to 4 gigs even though 2 gigs is the limit and what do you think about corsairs memory chips esp the sodimm ddr2 1 gig
and what would u say would be the best memory chip to buy i own an hp pavilion dv6141
Will I really see much difference between 2.2GHz and 2.4GHZ? (Considering the 15.4" MacBook Pros)
What are the main differences between the 17" and 15.4" Macbook Pros other than the price and screen size?
At least from the more expensive of the two 15-inch models. Here's a decent chart with the specs: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=MacBookPro
If I were to buy a Macbook pro, do you think that going from the 1999 to 2499 macbook pro would be worth the extra 500?
I am on the ever growing back-log of customers waiting for their Dell XPS 1330 to ship. Since I have all this time to wait and think, is there another laptop comparible to the XPS 1330? I was looking at the MacBook Pro but I'm not sure if I want to make the jump to Mac OS. Any suggestions?
If so, the closest thing may be a non-pro 13-inch MacBook. You can always run Windows on it through bootcamp -- but I stand by my earlier statement that the XPS m1330 is pretty frickin' sweet.
What can speed up a wireless laptop? I just switched to one and it is so much slower than my old desktop.
Lots of new laptops support the new faster 802.11n wi-fi standard (faster than the usual 802.11g). See if your laptop and router support that.
I love the idea of solid-state drives. However, there are only offered with 32 gb of memory. Should i buy a laptop now, or should i wait until solid state drives are made in 128 gb (which is enough for me)
Also, how long do you think will it be until all laptops are made with SSD's?
Unless you want to spend a lot, I wouldn't wait around for SSD drives. They pretty much top out at 63GB right now, but they add $600 or more to your system price. But -- it's totally where laptops are going in the next few years.
Thanks for your time!
I have been researching which laptop I would Like to buy for about a week now. I have been reading all sorts of reviews and videos trying to make the best choice. to name a few I have looked at... XPS 1710 XPS 1330(just recently) Alienware, Toshiba satli. and many more. I always use Cnets reviews when buying things and it usually plays a big role in which products I buy. I have a solid 2k to spend and I could possibly spend around 500 to 1000 more if it really makes sense(I also get about a 12% to 15% off the list price thru my business). I would really like for my laptop to have some sort of protection plan for accidents(I think most comp. have this). This is very important to me b/c I don't want to have to worry about my investment going to waist. I will more than likely be using vista so I have been looking at laptops with 2gbram. I had always thought that size didn't matter to me.(if I have to sacrifice portability for performance, thats not a big deal) the only reason I looked at the XPS1330 was for fun and it seemed when I customized the system that it was around the same price range as the 1710 but with way more sleek design.(making me question). I like to play video games on my 360 but have been looking to be an occasional PC gamer. Not a 24/7 gamer like I use to be. so gaming is important but it doesn't have to be the best. I also do a little pictures and am looking to get more into video editing(nothing big). I would be using the laptop at home, on the road, and around town. But I carry a big backpack already so throwing a laptop in there will not bother me at all. Battery life is not a must but a plus(i already plan on buying an extra battery) so that I can use it fow a few hours(plane) w/o plugging in. I am a very indecisive person and am still not sure what laptop I should get. I am open to anykind of laptop(mac?) with a protection plan available. Thank you very much for your time and knowledgable advice.
Not great for super hardcore gaming, but for most of us, it's fine. Make sure you get the extended battery, tho'.
Dan,
Hi! I really need your help as my new husband & I have an International Ministry in West Africa {now also based here in the U.S. as I am an American} & one facet is feeding orphans & widows! We need to raise money for both the Ministry & to pay our monthly expenses & are just about to launch an Inport/ Export Business, shipping laptops to W. Africa. Would you please be able to help me as to which web sites & web stores are the best in this endeavor? Also, I am a "baby" to say the least about software etc. & presently my husband is overseas in the field & is very limited in his ability to help me with research etc. Please anything to offer to this equation & business prospect we would be most grateful, thanks!!!
My husband advised me to buy Pentium M & Centrum, as they would move in the market; yet I really need so much more help, even after reading for many hours on~line!!!
Also where would I go to continue to get the basic info on computers/laptops? Anyway, thank you soo much for your help!!! God Bless you and your family!

Hmmm..It's hard to suggest a specific system without knowing your budget and size requirments, but I'd, as a default, look for a mainstream 15.4-inch model with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and at least 1GB of RAM.
i bought a new dell laptop for our COO, installed all apps and then went to put a pcmcia card into it and it wouldn't go in. i went onto the dell chat and the following transpired:
07/26/2007 01:49:49PM Agent (SMB_CURTIS_11994): "This system comes with a Express Card slot."
07/26/2007 01:50:08PM Mark Ingoldsby: "what is that"
07/26/2007 01:50:53PM Agent (SMB_CURTIS_11994): "This slot is a smaller thinner version of the standard pcmcia slots."
07/26/2007 01:51:54PM Mark Ingoldsby: "i have a verizon wireless card that is a pcmcia card that the COO needs to use on this laptop, is there any way i can get that card to work on it?"
07/26/2007 01:52:53PM Agent (SMB_CURTIS_11994): "Unfortunately if the card does not fit in the slot it will not work on the system."
when you buy a computer from dell they give you a billion options for it, including some "options" that only give you one choice. but there was no warning that something had changed. have you heard of this new express card slots? what's the difference and don't you think since the slot looks identical in pictures of the laptops that there should be some kind of warning?
Yes, this trips a lot of people up, because the slots look very similar, and vendors often don't point out the difference. There are even two different sized of Express Card slots. On the bright side, you can get pretty much anything you'd need a PC card for as an Express Card.
Do you recommend building your own laptop? Are the companies that offer this option reliable?
going to any vendor you like, Dell, HP, Alienware, etc., and they'll let you configure just about any part on your laptop -- cpu, RAM, vidoe card, wi-fi options, etc. It's the next best thing to building it yourself.
I am going to be a sophomore in college. I learned last year my heavy old 9 pound laptop does not cut it with going class to class. I have been looking at lighter ones but they all come with intels x3100 graphics does it work fine with vista. I was told at the stores that vista is very graphics hungry. could you clarify? Thanks
I check out these days, unless it's super top of the line, I always turn off the transparant windows in the Vista appearances menu, or sometimes even switch the theme to Windows Basic.
for Back to School ideas -- check out this cool video I just did on that very subject: http://reviews.cnet.com/4660-10621_7-6757395.html
What do you think of apple laptops versus windows? also, do you think that it's worth it to go for the 2499 macbook pro instead of the 1999 one?
Plenty of people have made the Mac switch since Apple added Intel CPUs to their systems -- which makes it possible to also run Windows, thereby easing the culture chock of switching. Limitations depend on the software you want to use (you may not want to buy Photoshop for the Mac is you already own a PC version), or things like the lack of a right mouse button (you can work around this -- touch the touchpad with two fingers and click the button, it's kind of like a right click in many apps). Of course, the biggest Mac drawback for some people is a lack of support for games -- although that's getting better. (And now we'll sit back and wait for the first response from an angry Mac fan…)
What if I only want a laptop for email, exchange of photos, the news and occasional surfing like in "Google" and such.
pretty much any modern laptop would work. I'd say the default middle-of-the-road choice right now is a "mainstream" laptop, which is a model with either a 15-inch or 14-inch screen. A good example is the recent Dell Inspiron 1420, a 14-inch that starts around $800.
Hi, I want to get a laptop to replace my desktop for when we are traveling. I know nothing about laptops. I've heard they perform slower than desktops. I would use it to pay bills online, surf the net, e-mail and play games, mostly Sims2. My desktop is a 3 year old Alienware, which I love. I want a quality laptop. What computer, brand & components would you recommend for me. We want to spend around $2000. Thanks.
Well, you've got a lot of options out there. If you're looking to make your first Well, you've got a lot of options out there. If you're looking to make your first foray into laptop-land, here are a few key things to keep in mind:
The most important thing to note is that for the most part, all these laptops have the same or similar parts inside, at least within their general categories (gaming, etc.). There's basically no laptop you can buy today that won't work fine for Web surfing, working on Word documents, e-mail, etc. Therefore, once you figure out how much you want to spend and what size laptop you want, it mostly comes down to feel and design.
I see a lot of other questions on the same topic, so I'll go into some of the details in a little bit.
I just bought a MacBook Pro. I did not get Windows or Parallel Desktop. Is it a good idea to install this or should I just limited it to the MAC SW to avoid all the MS problems?
I think it's pretty cool that you can run both operating systems on your MacBook. That being said, you only need to do it if you need a PC-only program for something, or if you simply prefer the Windows interface. Parallels is cool, but it runs, you guessed it, in parallel with the Mac OS, so your performance may suffer.
Boot Camp avoids that, but you need to reboot to switch between Windows and Mac. Oh, and you'll need some kind of official copy of XP or Vista.
I know HP has a laptop with a HD-DVD drive, will they ever produce a laptop with a blu-ray drive? or will they produce a laptop with a dual Blu-ray / HD-DVD drive like in their one desktop model?
Officially, the answer is "no," as HP is somehow involved with the HD DVD parent group. But if Blu ray continues to dominate in the public eye, I think some hybrid drives will eventually start showing up. But don't hold your breath.
When you reviewed the macbook, did you notice if the plastic construction looked prone to breaking or cracking? and did the corners bother your wrist while you typed?
Thanks Dan,
Candice
When I reviewed the first Intel-powered black MacBook last year, I brought it home, and my wife (also a tech journalist) took an instant liking to it. When I had to return the review unit to Apple, she went right out and purchased her own black MacBook from the Apple store in Soho. It's now her main computer, and we haven't had any trouble with it, although I've read about some problems with early runs of the white version.
Is there any way I can built a laptop? Like lets say buliding a desktop...
It's pretty hard to do that, but a few companies, such as Asus and AOpen offer barebones kits where you can add your own CPU, OS, etc.
Hey Dan,
Do you have any recommendations on a good laptop?
Thanks
Good laptops, huh? You've got me stumped. Just kidding -- but it depends on what you're looking for. I'll expound in a little bit on my philosophy of laptop buying.
Are you trying to connect an external drive that requires power through a USB port that is unpowered? Might be worth checking...
I've heard that Intel is winning the mobile processor battle now. Is this true and why?
In fact, we just checked out the mobile version of the Core 2 Extreme CPU in a review of the HP HDX (should be live later today.)
About a year and a half ago, AMD was ruling the roost with the X2 CPUs, but these things always go back and forth, and the ball is just in Intel's court right now.
One thing I love about desktops and hate about laptops is the general lack of user-serviceable parts inside. I'd strongly suggest consulting the manufacturer.
Alrighty, let's get this show on the road. It's time to submit your pressing queries (hopefully about laptops, but you know, whatever's on your mind), and we'll go from there. Keep an eye on the clock, 'cause in 60 minutes, I revert to pumpkin form.
