by brothergrims - 8/2/07 8:22 AMsounds simple, but after seven years of searching and fighting with Norton ghost and begging local tech guys i still don't have what i need. but it should already exist!, now this answer may already be on this forum and if it is i apologize, but i couldn't find it.
what i want:
after i install all my software, and get the computer happy and stable i then want to plug in a second drive with identical parameters and run a copy prog via the DVD-floppy - or what ever, that copies the drive including the windows licensing to the second identical hard drive. This way when the inevitable happens like i installed software that conflicts, catch another virus or anything that causes a un-reparable problem, i have a fast and easy replacement drive to save the day.
The only problem with ghost 10 is the licensing. this may be something im fighting with becouse i don't know how to use it, but ive read the instruction book, and think i did it right (but i could be wrong), It claims duplicate usage on boot up of the new drive, I am willing to even pay for a duplicate usage fee.
Understanding this method of backup requires one to re-copy the software anytime the primary drive is updated or modified may be a hassle, the security in knowing that anything can go wrong and im am back up and running in as long as it takes to unplug and plug in the other SATA is far above worth it.

All you are trying to do is make a duplicate copy (clone)of your hard drive for backup purposes? I use to do that with Ghost all the time. We were fighting with Ghost to get network installs working. So I finally gave up and just started cloning drives one at a time. I just plugged the clean drive into the machine with the imagine installed, ran the Ghost CD from boot (did not boot into Windows first) and created a cloned HD. Of course we had a site license, I don't know about the legal questions involved with making a clone. But you should be able to just run the utility on your Ghost CD to create a clone. I don't remember there being any magic involved.

yes you understand my question perfectly and I have done the same as you, except when i then reinstall the "cloned disk" i get an error on boot saying that the licensing for my XP fails. i have attempted this several times, with the same result. This is the "magic" i cannot seem to defeat, has this ever happened to you? is your system NTFS or FAT32? Because folks have told me FAT32 does not have this problem.

I used G4u's COPYDISK. No fees. For me an easy to use command line and it was done.
