My brand new Canon Powershot A710 IS has a little green dot

by SearchingDigitalCameras - 8/1/07 12:52 AM

I just barely received my Canon Powershot A710 IS from newegg.com today! The picture quality looks pretty good. The only flaw I see is that there's a noticeable green dot on the camera's LCD screen. The pictures look great when I put it onto my computer, it's only on the LCD screen. Does anyone know anything about newegg.com's policy for replacements for defective products? Canon's warranty? Would they consider this a defect? Would it be better to go through newegg.com or Canon to get a replacement for it? Should I even worry about it at all (although it is slightly annoying, it doesn't affect picture quality other than the LCD screen, and it's possible that a new replacement could have a different type of defect)?

Newegg returns

On most merchandise, I believe Newegg.com has a 30 day return policy. They will issue you a return mechandise authorization (RMA) and credit your account for a fixed amount to cover the return shipping charges. If you're certain the LCD has a flaw and wish to return it, you would probably get a quicker response out of Newegg than you would Canon. Good luck.

dead pixel

if the green dot only uses one pixel its probably just a dead pixel. Its no real problem but it can get annoying. Dead pixels are just pixels that are stuck in one color, not neceseraly green. My Nintendo DS has a few of them in different colors.

Canon and Newegg.com's policies

by SearchingDigitalCameras - 8/3/07 2:31 PM In reply to: My brand new Canon Powershot A710 IS has a little green dot by SearchingDigitalCameras

I looked at the Canon warranty that came with it. It said that Canon reserves the right to fix it using a new or used part or replacing it with a refurbished camera. When I bought the camera from newegg.com, I had the choice of either buying a refurbished camera or a brand new factory one for $50 more. When I paid that $50 extra, that was conditional on getting a brand new one, not a refurbished one. It would be one thing if the camera was a month old when the green dot appeared, but the defect was right there when I took it out of the package. It's like what if you went to Wal-Mart to buy an iPod. On one side of the shelf it says "refurbished" and the other side it says "factory brand new". You pay extra to buy the brand new one and once you get home you find a defect in it. You take it back to Wal-Mart and they say that their policy is to replace a defective product with a refurbished one. Since you paid the extra money for a brand new one instead of a refurbished one, would it make sense to get the refurbished one for the price of a brand new one??? On newegg.com's website, it says that they don't pay to have your defective product shipped back to them; they only replace it and send it back for free, since the defect is with the manufacturer. When I bought the camera, the money I paid was conditional on getting a non-defective factory brand new Canon Powershot A710 IS, and told a specific amount of money! When I bought it, I wasn't told that I would be paying this extra shipping and handling charge. I was only told that I would be paying for the product itself and the shipping and handling to my residence. That extra payment wasn't part of the original deal in order to get a brand new non-defective camera. When a reasonable and prudent (thinking) person buys an electronic device from the store that says "factory new", he reasonably assumes that he'll be getting a non-defective brand new product, and doesn't reasonably assume that he'll have to pay extra money that wasn't listed just to get a non-defective brand new product.

yeah i had the same problem, dont worry not a dead pixel. just go on manual mode if u have it and fiddle with the settings and it should go. i have the green dot only on auto mode not on manual mode.
