We have three pcs

by markandcheryl - 7/28/07 3:32 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

We have three, one each for us and a spare case with motherboard, ram etc in the attic for the kids when they are older. All three are custom builds, and the kids one is cobbled together from bits we have upgraded from. Thing is, with technology going as fast as it is,they will say its obsolete and old fashioned and cann they have a laptop each instead? My husband will be in mourning for the good old days of chunky hardware, serial cables and cases which well earn the title of towers!

Farewell my lovely (or not...)

by MegsL - 7/28/07 3:38 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have two computers, one three-and-a-half-year-old Dell Dimension 8300 desktop and one four-and-a-half-year-old Sony R600 Vaio laptop.
The desktop does nearly everything I require from it - documents, still image editing, internet etc - though it doesn't handle video very well.
The Vaio does almost nothing I require but I can't bear to part with it, it is so beautifully made and so perfectly finished.
Like some collector who might prefer an 18th-century wind-up pocket watch to a 21st century solar-powered one, I am stuck with this Vaio laptop. Do other people find similar difficulties in bidding farewell to once-loved outdated gadgetry?

I have two 17" G4 Powerbooks, a 13" Macbook, and a lonely T23 that is currently running XP, but will soon be running Ubuntu. (I'm not counting the TiVo boxes...even though they're Linux :) We're on the tail end of a complete, deliberate migration off of Windows (and also off of desktops.)

I have 1 laptop (HP) and three desktops two HPs which are six and seven years old and work fine and one Dell about four years. one HP had a harddrive which was replaced by HP on the off chance that it could go bad. They all work very well untill my children and grandchildren are over. They think computers are new to me. I started with paper tape and punch cards.

I have one pc at home

by starworth - 7/28/07 6:05 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought it in 2003. It's a Dell Dimension 4550 with 112 gb hard drive. I've since added memory, and it's time for a tune up, but it hasn't given me any problems at all. I LOVE IT

How many Computers

by aintnorainbowdorothy - 7/28/07 6:55 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

At present, I have two custom-built Desktops, one running XP Pro SP 2 with 200gb hdd and 2gb RAM, second dual 320gb hdd stacked, SATA with external 500gb hdd RAID Storage. Has XP Pro SP2, Vista Ultimate, Office 2007, Office Groove, Exchange, SQL Server, Exchange Server and so on. Two Alienware Laptops, one with 160gb hdd and second with 100gb hdd, both 7200 RPM drives, one cheapest Vista, Home Basic, other with Vista Ultimate, 4gb RAM in both, iMac G5 160gb hdd, dual 2.0 PowerPC chipsets, all the goodies, and last iMac G3, 80gb hdd, Power PC Purple, the one I could upgrade to OSX 10.4 and will upgrade to OSX 10.l5, as I will with G5. Both are faster than Intel machines so have no intentiuon of replacing them. All are wireless. Use Linksys Gateway and Linksys 802.11x Router. Not a bad setup for a single user. Incidentally, I use all six for different functions.

Dell, Dell, Sony, IBM

by dknapp - 7/28/07 7:01 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Dell 8100 -- My first Dell - for wife and daughter. E-mail, iTunes.
Dell 4500 -- My second Dell - for me. Gaming, video editing.
Sony PGC-4G1L (notebook) - Wife's work computer for VPN access
IBM/Lenovo T-60 - My work computer for VPN access

Dells run XP Home
Others run XP Pro
All work as advertised and have had NO problems. Use wired network except for Sony, which uses wireless for easy access around the house and is possibly our most easily accessed web browser computer due to small size, great screen and wireless.
