Between my son and I we have three Macs; a desktop each (Old Blue and Whites - one accelerated to 900Mhz, one still at 350 Mhz - and a 1.5Ghz 12" PowerMac G4 laptop used for presentations and the odd video job that the desktops are too slow for.

Six? Why?

Better to recycle, than trash'em! Besides, how would you feel if told you are to be tossed out and replaced by the latest, flashy, unknown?
And it makes it easier to give someone a working machine, without the aggravation of starting from scratch.

Older machines still working are less of a worry when using them outside the house.

How many computers

by wgilbert5 - 7/28/07 12:39 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have four, two desktops and two laptops. I own a Gateway running MS Vista and a laptop running MS XP2. Then, I have an HP running Simply Mepis Linux and a new Dell with Ubuntu Linux preinstalled. If that's not enough for you, I have an HP pocket computer with EC installed and another, a Palm, with Mobile MS installed. Why so many and the different OS's, you ask. Because I'm a computer nut and have to try every new thing that comes down the pike. What's my favorite? The HP with Simply Mepis on it; it outperforms MS in all ways, IMHO!

I have a 3 year-old Mac PowerBook and a 5 year-old Mac iBook. These are absolutely fine for both work and play. Decluttered approx 6 other working and might-come-in-useful-for-spares PCs and haven't missed them at all. Now have time for a life...

And how many have you ever owned?

by jcbowen - 7/28/07 2:01 AM In reply to: Poll: How many functional computers do you have at home? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

At the moment I own just one computer, an Averatec 3360-EH1 laptop. More interesting I think is the question of how many and which computers have you owned from the beginning? I've had just 8 but it's an interesting list. In order of purchase they are a Radio Shack TRS-80 model 1, an Atari 512ST, an Epson HX-20 laptop that allowed me to dial up Compuserve at 300 baud with it's 80 character LCD text-only screen, a no-name PC that I paid quite a bit extra to upgrade the hard disk from 20 to 40 Meg (not Gig!)and on which I installed Windows 3.0 for the first time, a built-from scratch PC that went through so many upgrades that by the time it bit the dust the case was the only original equipment left, a CompUSA house brand PC, a Sony Vaio laptop, and finally the Averatec laptop I writing this on.
