No debate here

I've owned the HD-DVD player for months now, I've seen Blue-Ray playbacks... No contest what so ever.. $$$, Quality, Sound, just as good unless you're among that 1% that we all know.

Why upgrade to HD DVD...

by Danimal81 - 7/26/07 5:18 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Well, I can not speak for anyone except for myself however I think the real reson for upgrading to an HD DVD system would only be for the enhanced Audio & Video quality. I mean those of you that are saying that its all about the price are looking at it backwards. Price is always an important factor when making a purchase but in this case its a secondary decision. The real driving factor for anyone to even consuider switching to a different format and having to replace their entire DVD collection has benefit in some other way than just parting with their hard earned $$$. Lets face it, the picture quality on the HD DVD's is head and shoulders better than normal DVD. Its like watching analog tv and flipping to HD TV. There's no comparison.

I will be purchasing a HD DVD player to go with my HD system but not just yet. As soon as the "war" is over I think the picture will be even clearer. I am pulling for the HD DVD and not the Blue Ray becasue well SONY sucks. Hope this helps and makes you focus on the real question in mind...

Price point!

by rowhill - 7/26/07 5:28 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Sony should remember why they lost the Betamax/VHS war - price! There's no doubt that the picture quality of the Blu-ray is better than the HD-DVD (just as was the case in the Betamax/VHS shootout), but consumers buy on price, not picture quality. SONY!!! Are you listening??? I'll buy after the marketplace decides on the format. I was burned with a Betamax when the marketplace went with VHS - that's not going to happen again!

Bluray still uses MPEG2 on many titles

So it is absolutely untrue that the picture quality is better.

Other: Studio Support

by epstewart - 7/26/07 5:33 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I lean toward Blu-ray over HD DVD because there is only one major movie studio not releasing on Blu-ray: Universal. Meanwhile, Blu-ray has five exclusive studios: Disney, Fox, MGM, Lionsgate and Sony. Three remaining majors — Warner, Paramount, and DreamWorks — support both formats, and New Line has indicated it will likely do the same.

There are rumors Universal will go "format neutral" and support both formats by this time next year. That would mean every major studio releasing on Blu-ray. If that happened, I think Blu-ray would be declared the winner.

other, if ever

As I see it i need to replace most of my equipment to get any benifit from it, like an hd tv. At this point my old analog still has a great picture an regular dvds look and sound great on my 5.1 surround system. and with over 400 dvds in my collection I figure that i can probably skip both HD dvd formats and probably be ready for the next fromat that comes out after these.

Won't upgrade till it is the only recourse

by Bageech - 7/26/07 5:51 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I won't be upgrading till the DVD I am using now will no longer work. I am tired of upgrades that really do not enhance my life, but rather just are one more thing to make it more difficult. Give me reasonable system I can learn and leave it alone.

For instance, I would be happy to have the GUI of Windows 3.1. Fine make it backwards compatible and working faster and better, but don't make me have to learn it over and over. I have Windows XP now and don't want to get into VISTA till I have to.

Porn Porn Porn

Porn will decide the format war. It did for the Beta/VHS war and you know how that turned out....

As for me I have both with the xbox360 & PS3 and I get my movies on Netflix so there's no investment in titles.

Blu-Ray is in my opinion, better than HD DVD, but this is because it is larger. While Blu-Ray takes 25GB on a single layer, HDDVD take 15GB. The more memory it can take, the more DVD Titles, the clearer your music and audio/video is and everything's better, eventually.
I know that blu-Ray can take multiple layers, so that eventually in a single disc you can have a Hard Disc comparable memory size, which is optical and therefore less prone to damage. I don't know exactly what HD DVD can take, so I can't really comment, and what I say is from my little knowledge, but nevertheless, the war is good because the prices will be lowered, and then all one has to do is to purchase a blu ray and HD DVD compatible player or writer, and can choose what to do at that particular time - whatever feels best.

HD DVD supports web enabled content

by js1013 - 7/26/07 12:53 PM In reply to: Extra Content by dre.caruana

Every player has an internet connection, HD DVD movies are already available, like Blood Diamond that have web enabled features.
BluRay is way behind here.

Practicality

by ranron - 7/26/07 6:08 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been a BR fan for a while until I realized this: BR movies are in MPG2 and HD-DVD is in VC1.

Also HD-DVD is cheaper to produce, so for a consumer as myself, I would prefer to spend less money to buy blank disks.

And quoting a friend who is an industry expert on this stuff, "Blu-ray disks waste 20$ of the areal space on the disk surface, so you are getting a lot less usable space than possible."

Thanks.

HD-DVD for me now.

I mistyped the following:

It should read 20% oppose to 20$.

Why should I upgrade?

by vrmsr - 7/26/07 6:37 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have over 500 DVD's have spent way too much on current movies and have stopped purchasing more. If I want I can rent or download movies so I don't need a HD or Blue-ray player. They all cost too much anyway. I wish to keep more money in my pocket instead of supporting Communist China.

Only one reason to upgrade

by Alan Maughan - 7/26/07 6:54 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Since DVD quality and price and availability are all great, there would only be one reason to upgrade. If, and only if, the studios would make it possible to watch the airline version, the cleaned up version of some good but highly offensive movies.

LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS

by thelunker - 7/26/07 7:03 AM In reply to: Poll: Which factor would make you upgrade to a Blu-ray or HD DVD player? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Bottom line is I'm not getting enough back to justify the cost. Never once have I watched a regular DVD movie and wished it was higher res. Never.

If the players hit $100 AND the movies as are available for $9.99 AND my old player dies, I'll think about it. But, it won't do a thing for my current collection of DVDs and I'm not going to re-buy them.

The only way I'll buy one now is if it comes standard on my XBOX. Otherwise, not a chance.
