HELP!!!!
I am really struggling with this decision, so any feedback would be massively appreciated. I'm trying to decide between the bulkier, more expensive 850 with image stablization and theoretically better quality photos vs. the thinner, cheaper, no I.S. Powershot SD1000.
If anyone out there has thoughts on this, I thank you, because I am just at a loss. I would go for the 850, but I'm afraid I won't pocket it as readily as I would the 1000, as it's just thicker enough as to not be quite that convenient. But then I worry about picture quality, the lack of I.S., etc.
Ugh.
Both of them are essentially the same. The 850 is rated slightly higher. If you do not have a steady hand then get the 850. You do not have to pocket it. Get a waist case, which some find fashionable. In fact, it is advisable not to pocket a camera. It is safer to put it in a waist/belt case. Both are also light enough to wear round the neck !
The Canon SD1000 is the replacement for the SD600.
Making the SD1000 camera thinner resulted in a reduction in picture quality.
If you look at similar photos at 100% size, the SD600 picture is much sharper.
If I were choosing between the SD600 and the SD850, I would go for the SD600.
Because the picture quality is just about equal.
And the SD600 is less expensive.
But I would choose the SD850 over the SD1000 because of the sharpness of the images.

I just picked an 850is up as a replacement/addition to my Canon S70. The size is excellent, albeit marginally larger than the SD600 series. However, the picture quality is superb and the IS function really does work as it allows low light handheld shots to be nicely exposed. This function alone is worth the difference in my opinion. In addition, the S850IS has a slightly longer telephoto range (35-140) vs the S1000 (35-105) as well as 8MP vs 7MP.
