How well can you spot phishing sites? Many of the readers of this blog are pretty savvy when it comes to security issues. So, we've created a deceptively easy but devilishly hard 10-question phishing quiz. Are you up to the challenge?
If so go to http://www.siteadvisor.com/quizzes/phishing_0707/ to test your Phish IQ!

I got 5 out of 10 right. Kinda scary, when you think about it. I use site advisor and spoof stick, so maybe I'm a little safer!.....Maggie
Another method to avoid phish is type the URL in the address of the financial institution or any websites instead of clicking it from the email message ![]()
I got 9 out of 10. Screenshot of my result here. I made a mistake about "MySpace". Luckily, it's not a financial institution ![]()
considering I've NEVER had ANY contact with ANY of the test sample companies or even visited their sites or received mail (even ads) from them, I figure not too bad. Glad I don't bank online! ![]()
That's why I use Spoofstick. I know I wouldn't recognize a spoofed website. The only downside to Spoofstick is it doesn't work with FF.....Maggie
1. Turn on the status bar on your browser. Normally under View - Status Bar.
2. Then hover your cursor over the various urls. The status bar will show you the actual url. If you see some IP address instead of a site name. Or if it's a financial institution and it doesn't have an https, I would stay away from those site.
7 out of 10, not bad considering that I use a more secure system for my online banking! Online banking in the States seems QUITE insecure, scary to say the least! Living in Sweden, most banks use a Digipass (Google it!) or other similar two-factor authentification system for their secure online banking, increasing security. I am able to log in even at internet cafés, since the information I type in is usable only one time. Without entering the "virtual vault" of my bank using my own security token I wouldn't be able to access any information.
Thanks for a great test - quite a thought provoker!
got 7 out of 10. Blew it on Capitol One (it surprised me that the actual loan application site asked for the social security number - seems dangerous to me, but I suppose it would have to to start the application), Amazon (don't use it), and the PayPal email (surprisingly - the link got me - thought they didn't use links in their emails anymore? Most of the PayPal spoofs I get come to my non-PayPal address, so they're pretty obvious). That score got me the rank of "Tight-Rope Walker" which I thought was a bit harsh, especially as I mostly blew it on sites I don't use, and for PayPal I type in the URL and go straight there. Not exactly a tight-rope walk.
Got The bank of America one wrong, i'm only 13 so I though that was pretty good but I don't use or have even heard of some of those sites.
You're looking at another safety guru, with 10/10.
Admittedly, the very last question made me think for a minute.
I don't even live in Australia, and of all those sites I've only used Myspace.
Don't share personel information on the net. Like age, income, home address, parents names, names of brothers and sisters, phone numbers and the like. This could cause you trouble. Anyone else agree/disagree?
Hello- I got a 10/10 but honestly I'm shocked. I reviewed the results and the reasons I picked the real sites were not the same, except for the AOL question and email scams. I have a screen shot with results to show my teenager!
Ha!! Great marketing ploy. My choices were not based on any of their haphazard examples. Scammers are not so sloppy. It’s about 50-50 that you would recognize a bogus site. Which was my score. If a site or a request makes me uncomfortable, I close the tab. Using the company’s URL is your best bet in dealing with the scams. Go right to the company, bank or whatever, and start the process there.
No sales here.
What is the marketing ploy?
I’m referring to the McAfee site. Which is obviously selling a product to deal with Phishing. Then of course the readers are directed there by the Quiz creator from. Oh well, just to cynical I guess.
