Re: Anyone know of a good free registry cleaner?

by LennyV39 - 7/19/07 7:37 AM In reply to: ntoskrnl.exe by Carboglace

I use WinASO Registry Optimizer from WinASO.com. The "free" version is a full functioning program but it limits the number of registry entries it will repair on each run to only 10. So if you haven't run a registry repair program in a long time, you may have to run this "free" version dozens of times. Once you have your registry cleaned/repaired the first time, then running it once a week will be a much quicker process. I've been using this program for several years since version 1 and it's up to version 3.xx now and is much faster and does even more. I've never had it cause a single problem on any of my computers, AFAIK.

Thanks for the advice...I've never done a registry cleanup before, only disk defragmentations.

I did a search for "registry repair cleaner" on http://www.freewarefiles.com/ and found a couple. I'm going to try the Eusing tonight and see if that helps.

Regarding "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner"

Carboglace..

You might want to read this thread, before making any decisions. Things may have changed since then, but then again, maybe they didn't. Your decision.

too late

by Carboglace - 7/20/07 5:03 AM In reply to: Regarding "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner" by Carol~ Moderator

Too late, I used it last night. It found tons of errors, supposedly fixed them all, and then I was finally able to get Nero to work (although still very slowly but at least it worked).

On a related note, my AVG found that same ntoskrnl.exe here on my work computer, so maybe it's some crap I downloaded accidentally (and I never go on risky or obscure sites).

Regarding the Ntoskrnl.exe

by Carol~ Moderator - 7/20/07 7:35 AM In reply to: too late by Carboglace

Carboglace..

As quoted from AVG's forum regarding, "c\windows\system32\kernel32.dll and ...\ntoskrnl.exe"
:

'It is normal that AVG shows that files, the MBR or Boot record to have changed. These are done during normal maintainance, when you or windows updates files or have had to correct errors on the drive. The only time that you should worry is if they also show as infected.

To get AVG to quit showing them as changed, open the AVG Test Center, click the F3 key on your keyboard and tell it to accept the changes. If it still shows something as changed after this.. delete the file named AVG7QT.DAT in the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\avg7\ folder and AVG will rebuild it the next time it is run.

The %ALLUSERSPROFILE% is different for each version of Windows. The following are the typical locations for XP and Win9x

XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg7
Win9x -C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\avg7
'

I would venture to say, you probably didn't download anything accidently, if any one of the circumstances in the first paragraph existed.

You're welcome, Carbo....

You might want to read what "other's" are reporting about Nero. (Scroll down the page) The same site has an "unofficial" Nero Forum. It may be a simple matter of which version you have. I have absolutely no idea, as I don't use it. I only took a quick look earlier, but it may help. I remember reading about a compatibility issue with it, but don't remember exactly what I read it, or even where. :(

Best of luck with both..

Ntoskrnl.exe, shell32.dll,user32.dll,kernel32.dll,wsock32.dl

by DGcomp - 11/3/08 4:10 AM In reply to: Regarding the Ntoskrnl.exe by Carol~ Moderator

Hi all above mentioned files are appearing in the scan of the latest AVG -latest free version- .The result/infection column says change but this doesn't seem to change at all and comes up with every single scan. My laptop is operating considerably slower and not just for AVG scans. I have run cccleaner and got rid of a lot of stuff however it doesn't seem to have much impact. I have tried pressing F3 -as suggested- but that doesn't change anything either. My laptop is M Vista can anyone help please?

Would you recommend uninstalling AVG and installing it again?

Many thanks in advance

WINDOWS NTFS KERNEL IS A (IT) NETWOKING OS WHICH USES
CMOM (think of it a MRS MICROSOFT or MOM to us USER)
well just like your real mother (MOM) to you
MRS MICROSOFT CMOM watches and reports any and all changes TO MR MICROSOFT (your os kernel) and any changes made buy your software (HACK 1 HACK 2)windows update your ISP and nay software that uses auto updates
is recoreded BUY CMOM then your os kernel makes them changes that you see as a USER

AVG THRID PARTY SPY is like the 007 of your computer because it watches what CMOM is watching but 007 reports back to AVG your antivirus

so with all that in mind WHEN YOU UPDATED (most likily the TIME UPDATE (latest patch from DADDY MICROSOFT) made changes to CMOM and MR microsoft WHILE 007 said
HEY CHANGES WHERE MADE I BETTER ALERT BASE CAMP A.S.A.P
hence the changes made to the sys dlls you speak of from the time update

this means 2 things the most important is that AVG is MI5 on guard
and 2 your update was installed correct and is working

as for your slow running program defrag and defrag the registry also run a reg cleaner

AVG is a new breed of antivirus sweeper that digs a little deeper CLAWS into your KERNEL to stand gurad
and i am sure that this will be corrected in the near future dude i have used norton, trend, macafee ,and when it was time to shell yet ANOTHER 50 bucks every year i said NO.....NO MORE will i be a slave to A PROGRAM I BUY ONCE EVERY YEAR and after hearing about AVG and then trying it IT BLOWS MY 50 DOLLAR antivirus AWAY and its free while i am in no way knocking any of the PAY FOR ANTIVIRUS basicly there all the same
UNTIL AVG came along

and i think i speak for people all over this planet when we SAY WE ARE TIRED OF paying for CONTINUED UPDATES
for a program i already spent 50 BUCKS ON LAST YEAR

i think it is time to release THE DOG!!!!! on your CONTINUED SUPPORT PROGRAMS

this is just my point of veiw......... and in no way should reflect upon to your point of veiw........

but there will allways be someone doing it better then all the rest as history refelects from the dawn of time it self

AVG-slow

by mrlemarquis - 4/2/07 2:02 AM In reply to: AVG Free scanning REAL slow and ntoskrnl.exe changed by LennyV39

I've been with AVG Free for years, and haven't noticrd anything unusual recently. The first two mentioned have always been marked as "change" and the 3rd I've never seen mentioned on the scan.
I can only imagine that it has something to do with whatever you've installed recently. A suggestion which you can try is to go to "add/remove" programmes, and either take AVG off and reinstall, run the scan to see whether the same things happen, or on the same page "add/remove" try to see whether the possibility exists to "repair" your Installation of AVG.

AVG scan

by doktorbob - 4/2/07 4:13 AM In reply to: AVG Free scanning REAL slow and ntoskrnl.exe changed by LennyV39

The AVG scan of over 450,000 items only took me 26 minutes. 80 gig hard drive. The more programs and other junk you put IN YOUR computer takes up space and is more to scan. So quit complaining that AVG is running slow for you for the last 2 days. What did You add in the last 2 days. Maybe Your machine is screwed. Robert

AVG Free scanning REAL slow and ntoskrnl.exe changed

by anglerfishuk - 4/9/07 11:55 PM In reply to: AVG Free scanning REAL slow and ntoskrnl.exe changed by LennyV39

I have virtually the same message coming up except mine is user32.dll is changed, along with ntoskrnl,
My system seems to be running ok, I have been usuing AVG for ages (4+ yrs) and have never found any problems with it, in fact in a recent Computer Magazine lab test it came 4th against all the "well known" AV progs in fact it shamed them.
I know I had a major AVG update a couple days ago, along side a Zone Alarm update as well,
As for AVG running slow I have an 80GB HDD and this morning it took just over an hour to scan over 100,000 files which i think is good, usually if it starts to run slow i check to make sure nothing else is running in background,
I have read through this thread and agree CCleaner is a very good suggestion also if system seems slow to do a Defrag its amazing just how quickly stuff gets spread around causing slow downs.
An old adage that springs to mind is " If its not broke dont try to fix it "

AVG slow? Not on mine!

by mrlemarquis - 4/10/07 12:09 AM In reply to: AVG Free scanning REAL slow and ntoskrnl.exe changed by anglerfishuk

I liked that last answer about doing a defrag etc. After my comments on the thread "Norton", recently, I got a private message saying that it all seemed like a lot of work! Well it is, but there's "nought for free" and the time taken up in re-installing lost data (always assuming one has access to it) is considerably more.
Is it not possible in this particular case, that there are 2 AV Programmes still installed (even in part) which are "fighting" each other, instead of the virus?

AVG slow? Not on mine!

by anglerfishuk - 4/10/07 6:48 AM In reply to: AVG slow? Not on mine! by mrlemarquis

I think most new computers are shiped with either Norton or Macafee as standard with a time limited trial, IMHO they are a waste of drivespace and cause more problems when the time runs out, I have always told friends & relatives to delete them completely and to install AVG, plus I remind them to back up the HDD before they install anything else as well.
