The best ways to keep the 360 cool are:

1) Do not stack it ontop or beneath any other AV equipment (or equipment that produces heat)
2) Do not block the vents
3) If you put it in a entertainment stand, make sure that it is not fully closed.
4) Do not buy an intercooler, MS says that they can melt to your 360.

A cheap way to cool your xbox 360

instead of putting the xbox 360 directly on a flat surface, that will block the vents no matter if it is verticle or horizontal, lay the xbox on a mesh rack of some sort, or put it up on blocks. This will allow more air to get into the vents, and will keep the hot underside from heating up too much. because normally the hot underside (when horiztontal) is touching the ground which in turn just heats up the xbox which heats up the ground more etc until your xbox burns out and has the 3 red lights of doom.

Isn't it ridiculous that you have to go as far as putting a 360 on blocks to keep it cool? MS needs to fire all their quality assurance testers by releasing the 360 with obvious hardware over-heating issues. MS even admitted their mistake with their 1.15 billion dollar allocation for fixing broken 360s. Now analysts say the failure rate is over 30% for the 360.

I still love the console, but have had 2 360s die on me.
