I have owned several brands of TVs. The best color, reception, reliability and look has been with the Sonys. My first Sony lasted over 12 years. My second one that replaced it is going strong after 8 years! I have just purchased a 1080 LCD...and everyone comments about the picture quality and ease of use. BTW, all of my components are Sony brand. Consumer Reports rates others better...but I still rely on the history of my Sony equipment.
I believe it has the best cost/benefit ratio. Great features, great quality, great design for 80-90% of what a similar Sony would cost.
While I LOVE my Pioneer Plasma HDTV, in general I favor Sony because:
1) They work the first time, every time
2) Very high quality
3) Good documentation

When I used to attend the video trade shows in NYC, Panasonic showed their cameras on their monitors; Hitachi did the same; so did every other company who made both cameras and monitors. If a company did not make monitors, but wanted to demo their $100,000 broadcast camera, they used a Sony monitor. Without fail. 100%. I've bought Sony for the same reason - picture sharpness, color reproduction, and consistency. I've never been disappointed.
....have to admitt that the Hitachi 50 inch 4:3 *big screen* TV we bought over 11 years ago is still going strong. So well in fact that is has become the theme song for my wifes argument that we don't need a new HD wide screen.
I have considered a little midnight sabatoge (though not seriously).
I finally gave up waiting for the Hitachi to fail and advised I planned to go ahead with the purchase with my own bucks, (We have "his bucks", "her bucks" and "family bucks"; with no accounting for the spending of our *own* money). I wanted to charge the new set to the family but I just can't wait any longer.
So to the point, I've had good luck with Sony and will buy Sony again but that Hitachi........

I am receiving an on scerrn message that I should re-load win, 98 it also gives me a message to close down. My question is how do I remove my win.98 operating system? I do not see it in add or remove programs.
Thanks in advance for any help.
My computer is a Dell desk top Dimension xpst 450.
After having TV sets repaired in the past my repairman tells me that fixing Samsung TV's cost less. The parts are cheaper to purchase. Plus the Samsung's have a good picture.
Now when I purchase a HDTV it will be based mostly on picture quality. I sure if a HDTV set breaks it really won't matter about repair cost.I believe it will cost an arm and a leg to repair one.
After window shopping it seems to me the better picture on HDTV belongs to Phillips,Sony and Panasonic. But you have to consider resolution. The higher the number in d.p.i. the better the picture.
Kind of like digital camera's. A 10 mp versus' a 6.4 mp.
We've never spent more than $30 for a TV set. We get them at garage sales. They're not the latest or flashiest, but it does the job for us. I don't even hook up to cable or satelite. We watch movies from our local library.
I waste my money and time on DSL, laptops, MP3 players and my business.
no problems after years of service...exceptional picture and sound.
Studied hard before forking out big bucks for a big TV. Was all set to buy Sony Vega, but discovered the 5 year reliability is no where near the old Sony trinitron sets. Nearly bought a Panasonic Plasma until I found out the store had over 20 defective ones in the back room that couldn't be repaired. So, I went with Mitsubishi. Good combination of size (57 inch), great color management and clearity (1080P), and good value.
I'm hoping it was a good choice. Great so far (8 months)!
It will depend on the situation. If at the time that I am looking and the picture of one brand looks better than another, then I will get it. Not just because of the brand name.
I have only owned 1 TV; I've had it since 1995, and it's a Magnavox. When I got married, hubby brought his Toshiba big screen in the mix. Those are the only TVs we have, and don't plan to purchase any others until one of them craps out on us or we get a bigger house. Whenever we do buy one, we look at picture quality, user reviews, and price. For our other electronics, it goes by performance and price for the most part. For groceries and other sundries, like Lee, we have particular brands we *always* buy.
I've had several Hitachi large screen TVs, and have had great pictures with no complaints. I have the 55" Hitachi HDTV now and it's great. Lots of features, great picture and good price too!
For some reason, I seldom see Hitachi listed on your review lists.
No preference. The bottom line for me is to compare. As others have said, at any given time any brand may be best. Also I think some brands are better at making certain technologies rather than others. I think Samsung makes great DLPs. Two years ago their plasmas weren't as good (in my opinion). The downside to this is you can go crazy comparing all the technologies, all the brands, and all the models! I use reviews from CNET and other sources to narrow down my choices. I just wish CNET could focus a little more on reliability!
I currently have four TVs:
Panasonic 42" plasma
Toshiba 27"
Toshiba 20"(?) for the bedroom
Sony 27"
The three smaller sets are older. The Sony just broke down but it's 15+ years old. I haven't decided if it's worth fixing or I should get a 32 inch LCD. I have a Nintendo Wii attached to it, so a LCD or CRT are probably best.
When I got the plasma I knew the Panasonic got good reviews. I first bought a Samsung because it was cheaper. I did not like how faces looked on in dark scenes so returned it and purchased the Panasonic. I've been very happy with the Panasonic for the two years I've had it.
i just purchase a Mitsubishi 73" DLP is unbelivable never will I look at at normal tv again.
