Hi
I was wondering with your expert knowledge, whether you'd be able to give some advice.
I have a pansonic 32" LCD with a broken screen and wondered whether I could replace it with another make's screen, if there was one that was the same size and was compatible, as not bothered what name is on the front....
Thanks
I have had a Samsung LCD for almost 5 years, not one dead pixel. I am using another Samsung LCD as a dual monitor setup with my laptop, three years old, not a thing wrong with it. I have purchased other brands but not even Sony is as good when it comes to monitors. I have had several Samsung cell phones, all have been solid performers. There are a lot of good brands out there, but Samsung has had the best track record in my experience.
I am a bit surprised that it is last in the polls.
probably due to the cost. they have always been more expensive
than the others. But = I have never found one to equal the
quality and abilities that they have.
I see friends and people at work that seem to replace their
tv and monitors every couple years due to some problem or another, but I have as yet to have any problems with mine. My monitor is
about 17 years old and can still handle todays video requirements.
the only reason I now have a dell 24 inch monitor is due to price.
the quality is also great. time will tell. Plus I still use the
mitsubishi on my old pc.

Why? Because of perceived reliability. After years of buying Dell desk top and laptop computers and repeated failures, I bought a Toshiba laptop computer and haven't had a problem in 3 years. The same with TV's. When it came to buying my first LCD TV, I went with Toshiba and so far, 2 months it has been perfect. I also recently bought a Toshiba DVD player.
are a marketers dream...
I love 'em both. I bought my first Sony car stereo with a cassette in 1979 while in HS and it never failed. Sold it to a friend after two years and it never failed him. All my electronics are usually Sony and they never fail me. My laptops are Toshiba; anyone with any brains can research that their product line is equal to or better than Dells and at less money. I am buying a new gaming laptop at $1800 WITH a 200HD and 2GB RAM. Dell offers the same laptop at $2300 with only a 80HD and .5GB RAM(that's 512mb). Anyway, most of my home appliances and food stuff, laundry choices I make are because of my parents choices' when I was a kid. I assume the makers of these products want that too. lol. I think the term is "Life-long Customers".
To be frank, I have NO loyalty towards any brand of electronics?
Why? Because I sell the suckers, and every single year, one brand will make a set better than the other, and vice-versa. To buy simply because you're comfortable with the name and not willing to put the research in is inexcusable. I'm looking at you, Sony-fans. You know Sony because it's a big name. Just like you know Bose. You assume because it's familiar, it must be the best. And in reality, you couldn't be any more wrong.
Bose is NOT the best speaker. Not by a long shot, in fact, it pales in comparison to many speakers at a lesser price point. But you buy it because it says Bose on it, right?
Sony is NOT the best TV. It's a good TV. You will pay more for the brand name. Often there are superior products for less. But it's true, Sony makes a reliable product. So do other manufacturers. Panasonic for example, is extremely reliable. The older Mitsubishi CRT's and CRT projections were ridiculously reliable (I have nothing good to say about their DLP's... break so often it's ridiculous. Lamps go out prematurely, light engines go out, fan's stop working, etc. etc... trust me, I have to listen to these calls every day.)
I have NEVER been a Sharp fan. But guess what? The new D92U series of Sharp? EXCELLENT! I bought the 52", and I'm totally satisfied.
Samsung: A few years ago, they were crap. Now? They make one of the best looking LCD's I've ever seen. And their new 1080p Plasma's? Beautiful.
Toshiba: For a few years, they've been behind the times. Their new LX177 Cinema series LCD's are INCREDIBLE. A 57" coming in about a month! For only 6 grand! It's great! A 57" LCD, you realize, usually carries about an 8 - 10 grand price tag. So yes, 6 is expensive, but in comparison, is not so bad.
Definitive Technology: GREAT speakers, incredible price and value. Klipsch: A little over-rated, but sounds great none the less, and is comparably priced. Their 600 dollar cinema 6 system is such a good value.
B&W? Pricey, but totally worth it. The list goes on and on.
The point I'm trying to make here, is that every single year, these brands change. Sony might just be the best brand next year, who knows? Please, do your research before you cling to a brand.
I have been considering a Sony KDL-40w3000 but have recently been reading some impressive reviews of the Toshiba 42lx177. My problem is that no one around here has the lx177 in their showroom to compare. It sounds like the picture and features are excellent. I would appreciate any feedback people who have seen this lcd.
There is little to choose technically between most electronics brands, the only objective differentiator has become features versus price - it's essentially a commodity market and most of us will probably switch between most brands for a 5% price incentive.
But then along comes Sony or Apple and, suddenly, we are prepared to pay a 10-20% premium for an apparently comparable spec. Why? Because our heart kicks-in and we 'desire' them for emotional reasons... an iPod is a cultural icon, while a Sony TV makes you feel smug when your friends walk into your sitting room. We secretly know that they send out certain signals about lifestye and attitude that we rather like.
LG, Panasonic, Sanyo, Mitsubishi...etc. do no such thing. they perform a function and remain a commodity until the next one comes along!
I have a had a Mitsubishi Diva for many years and it still gives perfect colour, and has proven to outlast other brands that my friends have had e.g. Panasonic, LG, Philips, toshiba etc. Recently I bought a Sony as Mitsubishi was not available in my town. I have many Mitsubishi products and have always had good experiences with them. Generally my fav electronic brands are Mitsi, Sony, canon, pioneer
In the past I chose Toshiba for quslity of color (I believed it to be superior after careful comparisons) and long life. I just purchased a HD tv and I am finding Philips to be an excellent product for picture quality and durability (so far) for the same reasons.
I've had my 27" Sony since 2001. During these 6 years I've never had a problem despite it being moved in a mobile home. Then being moved 1,000 miles by a moving company. Out of the flat or nearly flat screen TV's I looked at, Sony had the best picture. Plus having extras like being able to turn off the internal speakers and having the ability to turn the TV off & on at specified times are a real help. The only drawback Sony has is paying the price for their name. Especially on the HDTV's.
I tend to buy a TV based on its price and warranty followed by picture quality. I recently bought a hisense 32" LCD HDMI and it works fine, nb it is not as good as a sony 32" LCD, but for almost $800 cheaper and a 3 year in house warranty, where can u go wrong? Its seems other high end brands just have better marketing techniques than the lesser known brands. Take Samsung for example, for some reason i thought they were perfect but i bought a samsung DVD recorder and it F*&$%# up in 2 weeks. Go figure?
There are a lot of products I would happily buy an off-brand from, but not a major television. Philips has sold more televisions than most of teh other brands put together, they support tehir product well and are innovative. In fact I doubt that tehre is any television sold in the world that does not at least have a few Philips parts in it. My parents have 2 Philips TVs, one is 13 years old and the other one is 17 years old and they both are still in perfect working condition.
I would buy Sony, Panasonic, JVC (have a 47" of them), Sharp and Pioneer any time as they are good brands, but my loyalty remains with Philips.
My last TV I bought was a Toshiba - it had the same great components as the Sony, for about 100 bucks less.
