Latest questions and answers

Q: Size

by RyanD124 - 7/5/07 11:56 AM

Is the iPhone small enough to fit it into your pocket? I ride lots of roller coasters and like to keep my phone in my pocket instead of let the operators take care of it. Would it fit nicely?

A: Very slim

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:59 AM

It fits nicely in a pocket but you might want to consider buying a case if the roller coasters are very rough!

Q: iPhone Price..

by DJVas514 - 7/5/07 11:54 AM

The price of this thing is pretty high, do you see a price drop from here to december?

A: Probably

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:58 AM

I'm sure will see the price drop in the next few months. It could happen just before the holiday buying season.

Q: Camera gets dusty?

by ikjadoon - 7/5/07 11:53 AM

I'm not sure, but the camera looks like it doesn't have a shutter. Is it easy to get dust/fingerprints on it?

Thanks!

A: No shutter

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:57 AM

There's no camera shutter but the lens is recessed so we didn't have a problem with fingerprints. On the other hand, the lens is near the top of the phone so you have to make an effort to keep your fingers out of the way.

Q: Canada

by theAppleFanWhoAlsoLikesMS - 7/5/07 11:47 AM

Hello,

Is the iPhone likely in Canada? Most of our carriers use CDMA 3G where GSM is offered by only Rogers wireless. Also there is a lot of chat about ichat eventually making it's way into the iPhone, IS there enough bandwidth in even 3g to support this?

A: Rogers

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:54 AM

Rogers is the rumored carrier but we don't have confirmation yet.

Q: (NT) What is the overal call quality of the iphone?

by 8thsegare - 7/5/07 11:46 AM

A: See our review

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:52 AM

We give a full analysis of that in our review. http://reviews.cnet.com/smart-phones/apple-iphone-4gb/4505-6452_7-32180293.html

Q: Flash Video

by 8thsegare - 7/5/07 11:49 AM

Does Safari on the iphone support flash video, which is currently the standard for video playback on the internet?

A: Flash

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:52 AM

The iPhone's Safari browser doesn't have Flash right now. Is that the "Internet in your pocket"? No, not really.

Q: Larger text?

by crows_nest - 7/5/07 11:44 AM

I wear reading glasses. Can you make the text in the contacts application for example larger than default? With the large screen and a bigger font, I would assume that I could use iPhone without having to wear my glasses.

A: Text size

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:48 AM

The text size is pretty small and it can't be changed. You can use an onscreen "magnifying glass" to enlarge test you're highlighting but that's not really the same thing. Before buying, I would try it for yourself to make sure you can read it.

Q: GSM SIM Card

by imacpwr - 7/5/07 11:37 AM

No contracts have been signed yet but here in Switzerland it's reported that Swisscom is trying to negotiate a contract with Apple to be the sole iPhone carrier. How is that possible? Normally you insert a GSM SIM card into a cell phone which allows the device to connect to the carrier of your choice irrelevant of what make of cell phone you actually have. Do iPhones have some sort of GSM SIM card built into them which can't be swapped out..?

A: SIM card

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:47 AM

You can remove the iPhone's SIM card via a small drawer on the top end. But you can't use other AT&T SIM cards in the iPhone. That's troubling as swapping SIM cards between different handsets is one of the big advantages of GSM phones.

Q: photo quality

by LeMoNs23 - 7/5/07 11:38 AM

how is the photo quality? is it better or worse than other 2 megapixel phones?

A: Photo quality

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:43 AM

It's pretty good, actually and quite comparable to other 2-megapixel cameras. Just remember the iPhone doesn't come with camera editing options. That's not a surprising move from Apple. Check out our iPhone camera photo gallery.

Q: Razr 2

by evant8950 - 7/5/07 11:36 AM

When is the Razr 2 due to the US?

A: Razr 2

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:41 AM

Motorola has said sometime this summer. AT&T is the rumored carrier right now but we don't know anything for certain.

Q: Europe and Asia?

by Difatality - 7/5/07 11:30 AM

Will Europe and Asia recieve a watered down version of the iphone, or it will have the same futures like AT&T visual voicemail?

A: Visual voice mail

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:40 AM

Visual voice mail is a big feature on the iPhone so I would be surprised if Apple eliminated it on versions sold in other countries. That may be why it's taking so long, as Apple need to find a carrier in other countries that will support the features.

Q: Photo transfer

by The Big M - 7/5/07 11:28 AM

Can you transfer pictures snapped with the 2mp camera to your computer or is it crippled just like every other locked phone and requires cingular's data service to transfer them?

A: No Bluetooth photo transfer

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:39 AM

Sadly, Apple and AT&T seem to have pulled a Verizon move on the iPhone. The Bluetooth only seem to work for voice calls.

Q: Iphone and iPod speakers?

by bennyd317 - 7/5/07 11:27 AM

If you plug your iPhone into your iPod speakers using the 30-pin connector will it work? Will you here the audio? Or will you just have to use the headphone jack?

A: Not sure

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:38 AM

I haven't tried this yet but Jasmine France has some speakers I can test it with.

Q: iPhone user data collection

by thatchman1 - 7/5/07 11:21 AM

The other day while syncing in iTunes on Windows, I was asked if I would submit some usage/usability data to Apple. This happened twice. I was more than happy to submit, but I am interested to know if anyone has researched what apple is collecting...

A: Looking into this

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:38 AM

Our music editor, Donald Bell, mentioned this the other day. That's a great question though. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer but he's reviewing the latest iTunes so check back soon.

Q: web browser usabillity

by noldrin - 7/5/07 11:26 AM

In the promotional material, Safari on the iphone looks awkward and small. How is usability / readability compared to Opera and Opera Mini?

A: Safari

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:31 AM

I like the Safari Web browser on the iPhone and think it's one of its better features. You can zoom in pretty closely so it doesn't have to be small. But it's best when using Wi-Fi.

Q: EDGE: "Slow and Horrible"

by Alansmallen - 7/5/07 11:26 AM

Why did Apple kill the iPhone with EDGE?

A: Wish I knew

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:30 AM

I don't know why Apple excluded a lot of things on the iPhone. Read my latest column for a further discussion on this topic.

Q: filter?

by ATLGUY - 7/5/07 11:19 AM

My kids love the iphone. Can I filter what youtube stuff comes up?

A: Parental controls

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:29 AM

Nothing from what I've seen. If it's on YouTube you should be able to find it on the iPhone.

Q: 2.5 g speed

by LeMoNs23 - 7/5/07 11:18 AM

how fast is the speed of use on the internet for the iphone? is it faster than dial up?

A: Internet speed

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:28 AM

EDGE is about the same as dial up, or maybe just a little bit faster. In other words, it's slow. Wi-FI can be very fast depending on the network you're usisng.

Q: textin

by Schmee101 - 7/5/07 11:17 AM

is the Iphone good for alot of texting? or should we stick with something along the lines of a enV or sidekick?

A: Depends

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:27 AM

This depends on the person. It has a QWERTY keyboard so you can type one letter at a time but not everyone will love the lack of tactile feedback that comes with the touchscreen. I'd try it and see how it works for you.

Q: HTC Coming to the US?

by Ivanoski - 7/5/07 11:16 AM

Is the any word of the HTC s710 (VOX) coming to the US?

A: Review

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:25 AM

Bonnie Cha, our smart phones expert, should have a review of this phone next week.

Q: iPhone comparison

by lifesucks9294 - 7/5/07 11:14 AM

Hi Kent, do you think the iPhone compares well to it's main competitor phones from LG and Samsung? Is the iPhone worth the huge price tag for what it offers?

A: iPhone comparisons

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:31 AM

For music I think Nokia's Xpress music phones and the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones compare well with the iPhone. They may not be as flashy but they're good music phones. I like the iPhone better than the LG Chocolate.

Nokia's Xpress music phones

Q: Ring Tones....

by Scott Gilchrist - 7/5/07 11:14 AM

Downloading ring tones is a "cash cow" for the cell phone carriers. I understand the iPhone has only a few ring tones. What are the options for ring tones with the iPhone?

A: 25 ring tones

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:23 AM

Right now 25 ring tones come on the phone. I'm hoping to see more soon.

Q: Do you think Apple will add Flash or Yahoo Messenger to iphone?

by Scott-USA - 7/5/07 11:08 AM

I heard Walt Mossberg predict that Apple would be adding Adobe Flash to the iphone in a software update through itunes within 60 days. But when i talked to a sales rep in the Apple store here in SF, he told me that Apple purposly kept Flash out of the iphone because it uses the phones processor too much and making battery life go down much faster. I also would like to know if Apple will at Yahoo Messenger to iphone. What is your opinion?

A: Flash and Yahoo

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:23 AM

I bet that these will be added to the iPhone soon. The omission of Flash is especially noteworthy. I don't know what the exact issues were with not adding them.

Q: Battery Issues

by wdehning - 7/5/07 11:06 AM

Though I had left it charging (via wall and computer) for in excess of eight hours, my iPhone never said it was fully charged. I took it in to the Apple store yesterday and they swapped it out for a new one. Today, while recounting my story, I ran into two other people who are having the same problem --- so here's the question ... is there a battery-recall issue brewing for Apple?

A: Nothing official

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:22 AM

A few people on Apple forums are reporting battery issues and that Apple has made exchanges. I checked with Apple tech support and called a few stores. They said there was no official exchange program as of yet and they didn't issue an official battery problem. I'm keeping tabs on it though as our battery can charge fully.

Q: Battery Life?

by jwatsontexas - 7/5/07 11:07 AM

Have you tested the charge time on the battery? Is is close to the time Apple says?

A: Not yet

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:17 AM

We haven't conducted that specific test yet. But we'll do so in the next couple days.

Q: Ringtones

by joeycnet - 7/5/07 11:09 AM

Can you assign songs in the ipod to be your ringtones for incoming calls or ringback tones?

A: Unfortunately, no

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:14 AM

No, you can't use MP3 tracks in the Ipod player as ring tones. That's really disappointing as we were hoping to see that feature.

Q: Thickness

by Schmee101 - 7/5/07 11:10 AM

I heard On cnettv that it was thinner than the original razr, is that open or closed? And is the original the same size as the v3m?

A: Just barely

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:13 AM

The iPhone is just barely thinner than the razr when the Razr is closed.

Q: latin america?

by Difatality - 7/5/07 11:05 AM

Is there any plans for apple to launch the phone on latin america in the near future?

A: Don't know off hand

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:13 AM

I'm sure the iPhone will get to latin America at some point. Europe and Asia are supposed to first though. Apple won't confirm anything right now.

Q: iPhone 2.0

by superduperuser - 7/5/07 11:05 AM

Hi Kent,
Have you heard of any concrete or possible release to the iPhone 2.0? and do you think it will support other carriers other than ATT? Thanks!

A: No word yet

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:12 AM

Rumors on the iPhone 2.0 range from this fall to next year. We won't know anything for sure unless we hear it form Steve Jobs' mouth. Wish I could tell you more!

Q: Email management

by rlabarca - 7/5/07 11:04 AM

My experience with the phone is that the email client does not remove email from your server when you delete it on the phone. I've seen some other posts about it too. Is this true? Could Apple have made the choice not to let people manage their mail from their phone like that?

A: I've seen this too

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:12 AM

This seems to be the ase, though we're testing to see if it's true in all instances. I'm not sure why Apple would have made this decision, if they did.

Q: How about the heat?

by jwatsontexas - 7/5/07 11:04 AM

Does the iPhone heat up a lot like most other cell phones?

A: Not that I've noticed

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:09 AM

I haven't noticed this yet. But we're still testing extended talk time. I'll add it to the review if the iPhone does heat up.

Q: Flight Mode?

by SteveL. - 7/5/07 11:01 AM

While the iPhone may be a great combenation of phone and music player, can you "seperate" the two features for use on an air plane? My phone (LG vx 9900) uses a "standalone mode" or flight mode for this.

A: yes, it does

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:08 AM

The iPhone does have an airplane mode for the iPod player.

Q: other carriers?

by jwatsontexas - 7/5/07 11:01 AM

Any idea on the time table for the iPhone to be available on the SPRINT network?

A: No idea

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:07 AM

AT&T is supposed to have the iPhone for a couple of years at least (though we don't know for sure). And Apple would have to make a CDMA verion for Sprint. I think it's unlikely, at least for a while.

Q: iPhone Now?

by Alansmallen - 7/5/07 11:01 AM

Kent, let me say that all your coverage was awesome. I have one year left on my Verizon contract. Should I wait, or get the iPhone now? If now, what are the cancellation fees for switching. Thanks

A: I'd wait

by KentGerman - 7/5/07 11:07 AM

Unless you really, really want it I would wait until your Verizon contract is up. if you cancel now, you'll pay a fee ($100 or more). Also, in a year we should see an iPhone with more features. Or at least i hope so!

JaJah iPhone Mobile Voip
Along with my first question about using an iPhone in Canada, i just wanted to make it clear that I'm not too worried about having cell coverage if I can use JaJah Mobile for a voip service. I know it's only good on a wi-fi network, but where I am in Canada, there is a lot of wi-fi anyway, and at 3.5 cents a minute, thats not gonna break the bank. Can I use the iPhone as a stand alone wide screen Ipod w/out the phone aspect?

You were wrong about photo transfers
You told "The Big M" at 11:28am that he could not transfer his photos to his computer without using the data plan.
Aside from the fact that the data plan is included, and unlimited, the answer is also very wrong.
The iPhone syncs with iPhoto, making photo transfer incredibly simple both ways via the docking cable.
Please read the questions carefully, as you are providing wrong answers to very important questions.

Will Apple look for a sole carrier in every country in the world?
I was thinking by the time the iphone arrived in Europe, if would be offered in an ulocked version. Nextel User
Kent, I am currently a Nextel user and despise my service. I am not locked into any service contracts, however, my phone is a company phone on a company account. My company does however allow me to port the number to my own private account if/when I leave the company (which will be soon hopefully). My question is this.....do I need to get my current number ported to a private account and then switch to ATT? Also, is the iPhone worth the money? I am a HUGE fan of new tech, and love to be on the bleeding edge sort of speak, but I have had some tech that has been rather disappointing. In your professional opinion, does the iPhone live up to what it is designed to do?

I've been following the phone closely, but can't remember seeing if the phone will sync wirelessly via 802.11g to the PC with the iTunes account. Will it? Also, what is the price if you add the phone an existing family account. $10.00?

I have an uncanny tendency to shy away from anything popular which is why I bought a creative Zen Vision m instead of an ipod. Heard any rumors about a "Zenphone" lately?

iPhone comparison
Hi Kent, do you think the iPhone compares well to it's main competitor phones from LG and Samsung? Is the iPhone worth the huge price tag for what it offers?

Ring Tones....
Downloading ring tones is a "cash cow" for the cell phone carriers. I understand the iPhone has only a few ring tones. What are the options for ring tones with the iPhone?

GSM iPhone
While I'm as burnt out on iPhone news as the next guy, I thought this was interesting.

BBC wrote today that O2, a UK Carrier, has won the contract to distribute GSM iPhones in Britian. The company says they "should have the new phones on sale in time for Christmas" and will likely carry a 300 pound (US$604.98) sticker price

Using iPhone's Wi-Fi Capabilities at SF Giants' AT&T Park
Just wanted to let you know that the folks at AT&T Park are working on permitting the use of their free Wi-Fr service by Apple iPhone users. I tried using it during the last SF Giants homestand and couldn't because their "Terms of Use" webpage used Adobe Flash (which the iPhone couldn't do). They claim that it should work before the All-Star week.

iMouse?
Do you think Apple will start integrating iPhone technologies into other products. For example:

http://www.macrumors.com/

Hrmpf notes that Apple has applied for a patent (in March 2006) which extends the concept of Multitouch to a computer mouse.

The user would be able to perform gestures such as pinching or a virtual scroll wheel on the surface of the mouse. In one embodiment, the touch-sensitive mouse would use an internal light source and a optically transmissive surface to track finger positions.

Gestures can also be used to invoke and manipulate virtual control interfaces, such as volume knobs, switches, sliders, handles, knobs, doors, and other widgets that may be created to facilitate human interaction with the computing system.

Combinations of taps or gestures could trigger different actions such as "tapping with the middle and ring fingers could open iTunes or be set in the preference panel to do any particular action."

Apple has had a number of patent applications related to multitouch technology in the past, and features multitouch technology prominently on the Apple iPhone.

Do you think Apple will add Flash or Yahoo Messenger to iphone?
I heard Walt Mossberg predict that Apple would be adding Adobe Flash to the iphone in a software update through itunes within 60 days. But when i talked to a sales rep in the Apple store here in SF, he told me that Apple purposly kept Flash out of the iphone because it uses the phones processor too much and making battery life go down much faster. I also would like to know if Apple will at Yahoo Messenger to iphone. What is your opinion?

Other Carriers Already In Phone
A few tidbits coming out iPhone hacking/modification efforts. The full file listing for the iPhone has been found, and a few interesting tidbits can be gleaned from the files:

Besides AT&T and Cingular, there are logo images for T-Mobile and Vodafone in the iPhone's file system.

Both Vodafone and T-Mobile are heavily rumored to be Apple's mobile partners in Europe/Germany. No other carrier's images are included.

What do you think? Other carriers? Other countries?

Battery Issues
Though I had left it charging (via wall and computer) for in excess of eight hours, my iPhone never said it was fully charged. I took it in to the Apple store yesterday and they swapped it out for a new one. Today, while recounting my story, I ran into two other people who are having the same problem --- so here's the question ... is there a battery-recall issue brewing for Apple?

Is it really that great. There are quite a few phones that can beat the i-phone overall. Cell phones rated on this site have higher ratings then it.

Email management
My experience with the phone is that the email client does not remove email from your server when you delete it on the phone. I've seen some other posts about it too. Is this true? Could Apple have made the choice not to let people manage their mail from their phone like that?

Flight Mode?
While the iPhone may be a great combenation of phone and music player, can you "seperate" the two features for use on an air plane? My phone (LG vx 9900) uses a "standalone mode" or flight mode for this.

Kent, let me say that all your coverage was awesome. I have one year left on my Verizon contract. Should I wait, or get the iPhone now? If now, what are the cancellation fees for switching. Thanks
