Is the iPhone small enough to fit it into your pocket? I ride lots of roller coasters and like to keep my phone in my pocket instead of let the operators take care of it. Would it fit nicely?
It fits nicely in a pocket but you might want to consider buying a case if the roller coasters are very rough!
The price of this thing is pretty high, do you see a price drop from here to december?
I'm sure will see the price drop in the next few months. It could happen just before the holiday buying season.
I'm not sure, but the camera looks like it doesn't have a shutter. Is it easy to get dust/fingerprints on it?
Thanks!
There's no camera shutter but the lens is recessed so we didn't have a problem with fingerprints. On the other hand, the lens is near the top of the phone so you have to make an effort to keep your fingers out of the way.
Hello,
Is the iPhone likely in Canada? Most of our carriers use CDMA 3G where GSM is offered by only Rogers wireless. Also there is a lot of chat about ichat eventually making it's way into the iPhone, IS there enough bandwidth in even 3g to support this?
Rogers is the rumored carrier but we don't have confirmation yet.
We give a full analysis of that in our review. http://reviews.cnet.com/smart-phones/apple-iphone-4gb/4505-6452_7-32180293.html
Does Safari on the iphone support flash video, which is currently the standard for video playback on the internet?
The iPhone's Safari browser doesn't have Flash right now. Is that the "Internet in your pocket"? No, not really.
I wear reading glasses. Can you make the text in the contacts application for example larger than default? With the large screen and a bigger font, I would assume that I could use iPhone without having to wear my glasses.
The text size is pretty small and it can't be changed. You can use an onscreen "magnifying glass" to enlarge test you're highlighting but that's not really the same thing. Before buying, I would try it for yourself to make sure you can read it.
No contracts have been signed yet but here in Switzerland it's reported that Swisscom is trying to negotiate a contract with Apple to be the sole iPhone carrier. How is that possible? Normally you insert a GSM SIM card into a cell phone which allows the device to connect to the carrier of your choice irrelevant of what make of cell phone you actually have. Do iPhones have some sort of GSM SIM card built into them which can't be swapped out..?
You can remove the iPhone's SIM card via a small drawer on the top end. But you can't use other AT&T SIM cards in the iPhone. That's troubling as swapping SIM cards between different handsets is one of the big advantages of GSM phones.
how is the photo quality? is it better or worse than other 2 megapixel phones?
It's pretty good, actually and quite comparable to other 2-megapixel cameras. Just remember the iPhone doesn't come with camera editing options. That's not a surprising move from Apple. Check out our iPhone camera photo gallery.

Motorola has said sometime this summer. AT&T is the rumored carrier right now but we don't know anything for certain.
Will Europe and Asia recieve a watered down version of the iphone, or it will have the same futures like AT&T visual voicemail?
Visual voice mail is a big feature on the iPhone so I would be surprised if Apple eliminated it on versions sold in other countries. That may be why it's taking so long, as Apple need to find a carrier in other countries that will support the features.
Can you transfer pictures snapped with the 2mp camera to your computer or is it crippled just like every other locked phone and requires cingular's data service to transfer them?
Sadly, Apple and AT&T seem to have pulled a Verizon move on the iPhone. The Bluetooth only seem to work for voice calls.
If you plug your iPhone into your iPod speakers using the 30-pin connector will it work? Will you here the audio? Or will you just have to use the headphone jack?
I haven't tried this yet but Jasmine France has some speakers I can test it with.
The other day while syncing in iTunes on Windows, I was asked if I would submit some usage/usability data to Apple. This happened twice. I was more than happy to submit, but I am interested to know if anyone has researched what apple is collecting...
Our music editor, Donald Bell, mentioned this the other day. That's a great question though. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer but he's reviewing the latest iTunes so check back soon.
In the promotional material, Safari on the iphone looks awkward and small. How is usability / readability compared to Opera and Opera Mini?
I like the Safari Web browser on the iPhone and think it's one of its better features. You can zoom in pretty closely so it doesn't have to be small. But it's best when using Wi-Fi.
Why did Apple kill the iPhone with EDGE?
I don't know why Apple excluded a lot of things on the iPhone. Read my latest column for a further discussion on this topic.

My kids love the iphone. Can I filter what youtube stuff comes up?
Nothing from what I've seen. If it's on YouTube you should be able to find it on the iPhone.
how fast is the speed of use on the internet for the iphone? is it faster than dial up?
EDGE is about the same as dial up, or maybe just a little bit faster. In other words, it's slow. Wi-FI can be very fast depending on the network you're usisng.
is the Iphone good for alot of texting? or should we stick with something along the lines of a enV or sidekick?
This depends on the person. It has a QWERTY keyboard so you can type one letter at a time but not everyone will love the lack of tactile feedback that comes with the touchscreen. I'd try it and see how it works for you.
Is the any word of the HTC s710 (VOX) coming to the US?
Bonnie Cha, our smart phones expert, should have a review of this phone next week.
Hi Kent, do you think the iPhone compares well to it's main competitor phones from LG and Samsung? Is the iPhone worth the huge price tag for what it offers?
For music I think Nokia's Xpress music phones and the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones compare well with the iPhone. They may not be as flashy but they're good music phones. I like the iPhone better than the LG Chocolate.

Downloading ring tones is a "cash cow" for the cell phone carriers. I understand the iPhone has only a few ring tones. What are the options for ring tones with the iPhone?
Right now 25 ring tones come on the phone. I'm hoping to see more soon.
I heard Walt Mossberg predict that Apple would be adding Adobe Flash to the iphone in a software update through itunes within 60 days. But when i talked to a sales rep in the Apple store here in SF, he told me that Apple purposly kept Flash out of the iphone because it uses the phones processor too much and making battery life go down much faster. I also would like to know if Apple will at Yahoo Messenger to iphone. What is your opinion?
I bet that these will be added to the iPhone soon. The omission of Flash is especially noteworthy. I don't know what the exact issues were with not adding them.
Though I had left it charging (via wall and computer) for in excess of eight hours, my iPhone never said it was fully charged. I took it in to the Apple store yesterday and they swapped it out for a new one. Today, while recounting my story, I ran into two other people who are having the same problem --- so here's the question ... is there a battery-recall issue brewing for Apple?
A few people on Apple forums are reporting battery issues and that Apple has made exchanges. I checked with Apple tech support and called a few stores. They said there was no official exchange program as of yet and they didn't issue an official battery problem. I'm keeping tabs on it though as our battery can charge fully.
Have you tested the charge time on the battery? Is is close to the time Apple says?
We haven't conducted that specific test yet. But we'll do so in the next couple days.
Can you assign songs in the ipod to be your ringtones for incoming calls or ringback tones?
No, you can't use MP3 tracks in the Ipod player as ring tones. That's really disappointing as we were hoping to see that feature.
I heard On cnettv that it was thinner than the original razr, is that open or closed? And is the original the same size as the v3m?
The iPhone is just barely thinner than the razr when the Razr is closed.
Is there any plans for apple to launch the phone on latin america in the near future?
I'm sure the iPhone will get to latin America at some point. Europe and Asia are supposed to first though. Apple won't confirm anything right now.
Hi Kent,
Have you heard of any concrete or possible release to the iPhone 2.0? and do you think it will support other carriers other than ATT? Thanks!
Rumors on the iPhone 2.0 range from this fall to next year. We won't know anything for sure unless we hear it form Steve Jobs' mouth. Wish I could tell you more!
My experience with the phone is that the email client does not remove email from your server when you delete it on the phone. I've seen some other posts about it too. Is this true? Could Apple have made the choice not to let people manage their mail from their phone like that?
This seems to be the ase, though we're testing to see if it's true in all instances. I'm not sure why Apple would have made this decision, if they did.
Does the iPhone heat up a lot like most other cell phones?
I haven't noticed this yet. But we're still testing extended talk time. I'll add it to the review if the iPhone does heat up.
While the iPhone may be a great combenation of phone and music player, can you "seperate" the two features for use on an air plane? My phone (LG vx 9900) uses a "standalone mode" or flight mode for this.
The iPhone does have an airplane mode for the iPod player.
Any idea on the time table for the iPhone to be available on the SPRINT network?
AT&T is supposed to have the iPhone for a couple of years at least (though we don't know for sure). And Apple would have to make a CDMA verion for Sprint. I think it's unlikely, at least for a while.
Kent, let me say that all your coverage was awesome. I have one year left on my Verizon contract. Should I wait, or get the iPhone now? If now, what are the cancellation fees for switching. Thanks
Unless you really, really want it I would wait until your Verizon contract is up. if you cancel now, you'll pay a fee ($100 or more). Also, in a year we should see an iPhone with more features. Or at least i hope so!
