Apple iPhone < Nokia N93 (which is in my pocket right now)

by wirebook - 6/28/07 1:38 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Let's assume these two phones are equal in price and avoid any details on this bit. Plainly put, if you have enough money to afford either one of these than you can probably afford the other.

Camera:
N93 has a 3.2MP camera. iPhone has a 2MP camera. N93 has a (basic) LED flash. iPhone doesn't. N93 records VGA, 30fps video. iPhone doesn't record video.

Screen:
N93 has a 320x240 pixel display. iPhone has a 320x480 pixel touchscreen. N93 has a clamshell form-factor to protect the screen. iPhone's screen just attracts fingerprints. N93 screen appears better, because of it's tiny pixels in relation to the iPhone's.

Battery:
N93 has a user replaceable battery that is pretty cheap. iPhone has a battery that is destined to go terminal all of a sudden.

Software:
N93 has tons of 3rd party software. Anything from blogging, barcode readers, GPS, torrents, VOIP, games, they're all there. iPhone has iTunes.

Computer Connectivity:
iPhone requires iPhones. N93 can work in mass-storage-device mode. Or it can sync with the computer. Or your computer can use it as an internet connection.

Overall:
June 29th is around the corner. People are camping out to buy the iPhone. Let's blame that kind of behavior on the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii. People are just too impatient. Apple is pushing the iPhone as being something of a miracle iPod which runs Mac OS X. If it eventually does function like an iPod, and can be used like a Mac computer, then I'll give it credit. I might even buy one instead of a laptop next year. But when your iPhone gets stolen... there goes your phone, your MP3 player, and your computer. Sure... same thing can be said about the N93. But people see the N93 and say, "Well... he's the only guy for miles with that phone. So if I had it, people would know I took it. And besides, it's big." You know what I say? "That's what she said." And, my N93 can do more than your iPhone.

Never will buy one.

by ttaylor49 - 6/28/07 2:18 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There will be a better one coming along.
But the real reason is I don't own a cell phone and won't unless the company I work for buys me one.

What's new?

by balouke - 6/28/07 2:20 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Mio A701, just because I don't want to have more than one thing to carry with me and it fits nicely in my Windows environment.
It 's not perfect (is there one device that does?) but it serves me well as phone, PDA and GPS or MP3 player. The IPhone (still) cannot.
On the other hand, the camera is just good for emergency.

I Phone

by whitts - 6/28/07 2:28 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I will not be bothering, having used all types of communications around the world whilst serving in the Army and Colonial Police (nearly 30 years in all) and always managed to get along. I even found the "cleft stick" to be useful when in the "Bundu". (It was to make sure that the message was not ruined by sweat.) At 79 I will not miss the I Pod. whitts

rather than spend $SIX HUNDRED ON AN IPHONE

by winstonh5 - 6/28/07 3:01 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I plan to spend $600 on APPLE stock to take advantage of the profits they are going to make from profits of selling to suckers.

Stocks

I think you may have missed the boat on that one. You should have thought about that when Apple shares dropped below 30 a few years ago. I did exactly that and have now bought 2 computers, an iPod, taken out my original $500 and am still showing 1000% profit. Wish I had $50,000 than rather than $500. I'd be paying someone to wait in line for me tomorrow just like someone else here said he was in his post.

GREAT WAY to get back at the iSheep buying the iPhone!!! Great thought; I'll keep that in mind! Just one thing, if the iCrap phone flops, you're screwed! And with about 99% of the people on this forum refusing to buy the iPhone, I'd wait and make sure it's worth trying. Peace!

I am in the market for a new phone and would love to buy the apple phone but I'm locked in on my plan with sprint. I hate them but my whole family is on sprint. I also need international access. I travel a lot and I need to be able to make a call in another country more than I need to watch a video.

Apple IPhome

by ronp4570 - 6/28/07 5:12 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

No, Don't plan to buy one of these phones.
Why? Well the phones is for those that can't get away from their
computer and so far peoplespend too much time on their cells now.
I see someone driving along with this thing and get an email for their love and can't wait to see it. We already have enough distractions driving with our current cells. Already people are dieing out there on the roads from cell phones.

Not right now!!

by edgar17 - 6/28/07 5:29 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There is nothing new about the Iphone, it's all hype. 1. Wait until you have to be without the phone for a week while the battery is replaced.
2. No 3G- Try to log onto a heavy content page like ESPN or CNN, also no flash. WiFi- Lets see if your local DMV has it when you're stuck there for 3 hours trying to renew your Drivers license.
3. If you get the 4gig, you are actually getting 3.3 gigs, WHAT?? Just one movie will take 1 gig away.
4. No MMS to share picture with others- Better learn the other carrier's email address (phn#@vzwpix.com,phn#@mycingular.com,phn#@pm.sprint.com) This one is really a joke!
5. Keyboard- You'll be there all day just trying to say hello, How are you? How is your day going? You might a s well just call the person, its faster!
6. Call quality- Remains to be seen. Beware of car stereo inteference, do not put the Iphone too close to your car stereo.

Now, you're asking for $500-$700 for all these crappy features??? Go get a Sprint Upstage for $79 and you'll get more minutes, 6PM nights, same touch screen feature and a data plan will run you $15 a month and you'll be able to download music now and not have to wait to get home to your pc to buy misic that's specific to your Iphone/Ipod only. Plus, you'll have about $500-$600 left to put gas in your car, take a friend out to dinner and movies. LOL! I heard Verizon has great music phones as well, and a great network, too! ;-) I am most disappointed at the fact that we all waited for so long for nothing!! Maybe the Vodafone version, but not this one... Just my 2 cents. EC

So many misconceptions!!!

by MzSabina - 6/28/07 5:41 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I wasn't planning on making another post to this forum, but after skimming through the posts this morning I just could not help myself.
First of all, I do plan on getting on iPhone, but certainly not on Friday. Probably around October.

Now for my comments on some of the posts I have read:
1. If you only use your cell phone as a cell phone, than NO you shouldn't even be contributing to this forum no less buying an iPhone.
2. An iPhone is not just a phone, It is also a data device and if you compare the price on ATT for a data plan to do texting, access the internet, etc. the price for the plan is the SAME!!!!!
3. Seems like Alto of people out there are comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended). What is so different about the iPhone is the WAY it accesses the web. It is a full blown, built in browser. Just like you have on your home computer or laptop. No extra steps to contact. For all you PC people out there who are unfamiliar with Safari, go to Apple's website. They have released a PC version. This is the same browser that is built into the iPhone. It is by no means the best browser out there, but it is still a whole lot better on a phone than anything I have seen so far. The biggest downside from the reviews I have seen so far is the EDGE technology. It is kind of slow, so graphics rich pages will be slow to load. The phone is also WiFi but that is going to depend on where you are. But just like any other cell phone, it depends on where you are. If the carrier does not have enough towers or the usage is too high, your going to get dropped calls.
3. People seem to think that there reception problems are the fault of the phone. Not the case. Most times it is the carrier. I am with ATT (currently Cingular) and have had no reception problems in my area in years. That is until ATT took them over. But from what I have read that is just temporary as they are planning on using the mass profits from the iPhone sales to upgrade their networks.
4. Why do so many people think there are no other apps available. Guess you haven't done your research. Just like any Mac running OS X, iPhone has Widgets. And Widgets are great. They are not hogs!!!!!!
4. Okay, no GPS. But Google maps and satellite images. And with Apple's typical elegance, the ease of going from looking up an address on the internet, to getting a map of the location, and then calling that location will be just as many steps as I mentioned. 3!!!! Not get out a piece of paper or switch apps or anything, just tap on the listing for the map. Or tap on the phone number and it will send it from the browser to the phone. No fuss, no muss!!
5. No calendars? Did I read that on one of the posts? Whoever wrote that better go take a better look at Apple's site. I have been using iLife for years and the Calendar, Address Book, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie are all integrated. If you put a birthday in your address book, it shows up in your calendar, and will send you an email to remind you of that birthday. All with ONE entry!

So to sum it up. Yes, there will be problems with the first generation, but I doubt they will compare with the Vista fiasco!!!! But to compare an iPhone to your simple camera phone just is silly!!!! It is sooooooo much more!!! And not just a toy. For someone who uses these functions, the iPhone will be a good choice. And the price point when you add it up is not really out of the ball park.

One other thing. You don't need a Masters Degree to figure out the functions. I am looking forward to getting a new phone for the first time and not going through a 2 month learning curve.

There are a lot more issues I could address here such as the SIM card, but I am tired of typing for now. So for all you people who are looking for a data phone that will access the internet and also your email, do your research before your start calling the iPhone a toy! Oh and by the way, you tell me which phone out there will download your email in a real email client in the background while you are checking your stocks or sending checks on the internet?

Remarkable.

"If you only use your cell phone as a cell phone, than NO you shouldn't even be contributing to the cell phone forum".

That clearly shows the evolution of cell phones.

The iPhone is more of a PDA with Internet access than of a phone, I think. Cleverly named, because iPhone surely sells better than iPDA. Possibly the PDA forum would be a better place to discuss it than the cell phone forum. Some of the posts above seem to agree when they compare the iPhone to their Treo.

Speaking of "Mz"conceptions...

by DWCorn's - 6/28/07 9:37 AM In reply to: So many misconceptions!!! by MzSabina

1. "Shouldn't even be contributing??" The last I checked, this was an open forum and the question was not structured with any conditions upon the response.
2.) Not that I'm doubting your veracity but I'd like to see your math on this one. If you're right, and I can't know because I don't do ATT, it could be why their scrambling and the exclusivity option with Apple turned into such a plumb.
3.) So I guess if you live your life out of a suitcase or the back of an SUV, the iPhone could be just perfect for you. Then hopefully there will never come a time when you're out there on the cutting edge, in the middle of no where, trying to secure a million dollar contract with a new client, and your carrier drops your call.

The current limitations of THE WHOLE SYSTEM limit the practicality of the iPhone... not the imagination or the needs of the user and in so much as we desire to be bent upon using such technology, the tail continues to wag the dog!

you have a misconception also

by mserica513 - 6/28/07 1:45 PM In reply to: So many misconceptions!!! by MzSabina

cell phones do drop calls, its not just the network, its both. cheaper made phones drop calls, I've owned 5 nextel phones some of them were the same model and there are differences. it depends on the phone as well as the network. my old black berry (before it got ran over hahahaha) dropped calls constantly. when it got ran over i got another one with my insurance exact same model, dont drop calls at all. not to mention i used to work for sprint, its both sweetie, phones and service..

but still no iphone for me i just got a ps3 no more 600 buck gadgets/toys for me, especially one that cant get my corporate email.
