You have got to be kidding!

by back_water_tech - 6/28/07 9:34 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have to pipe up and say something:

It is a cell phone! :D

I didn't pay $300 for a Motorola razr when it came out, either. ;)

Here is the way I see it:

1. I have no need for web browsing on the cell phone.
2. I have no need for a media player on the cell phone.

You can't stuff all this silly kid stuff into a phone and not have its radio systems suffer.

I do not live within a metro area. Cingular (I mean AT&T, oops) and t-mobile, like all the other little kiddie networks (Virgin, Amp'ed) just plainly do not work here. The cell towers are too far apart for their weak metro phones to function. Sure, when your car breaks down, you can watch a movie you downloaded to your phone while in Denver. Good luck making a call.

I use my cellular phone as a primary now days. It just has to work. I don't have the patience to have to drive to the nearest hill to get my phone to work.

Do i use my cell phone as a modem? Sure do. Do I use my cell phone as a web browser? Nope. That is what the laptop is for. Why would you pay $1000 for a laptop and not use it, only to use a tiny, crappy cell phone that you were charged $300 or more for. On top of that, why would you pay $300 or more for a metro only cell phone anyway?

I am not a kid, maybe I just don't understand. :p :D

It would make a really cool iPod

by cryoungdds - 6/28/07 10:11 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I like the touch screen technology, but the phone is too new to jump on right now.I'll let everyone else be the beta testers.

On another note, Apple needs to come out with the next iteration of the iPod with all the touchscreen features in the iPhone but without the phone...

No iPhone for me

by anisemurphy - 6/28/07 10:17 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First of all, the price of the phone is ridiculous. $499 for 4GB or $599 for 8GB? For a phone which is locked to one network, this is too much; even if it were unlocked and usable on any network supporting SIM cards, I'd still think the price was high. I will stop short of saying that Apple & AT&T are gouging the consumer because I don't know now much of the cost of the phone is going back into recovering the cost of developing it. After all, they do have the right to earn back the cost of research and development.

Second, the pricing plans suck. I don't think it is reasonable to force people to pay for services which they may not want, need or use. I'm not interested in surfing the net on my phone; so why do I have to pay for unlimited data on the plan? It's not like I can download music directly from the iTunes store; I still have to plug the iPhone into my computer to put music on it.

Here's the math:

$ 499 plus tax for the 4GB iPhone
$ 60 service fee per month for 24 months
$ 36 activation fee
$1975 will be the MINIMUM amount you will have to pay

Third, I'm not going to buy into the "ooh, aah" factor. Like the iPod before it, the iPhone will eventually blend into the landscape of the modern era. For a time, the iPhone will be the "IT" gadget to have. But the Ooh Aah factor will fade with time as the iPhone joins the ranks of the other cell phones in the market.

Personally, I'll be awaiting the sale of the Motorola Razr2 V9 (unlocked version of course).

I'd rather buy a new computer

by batman823 - 6/28/07 10:46 AM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

For that price I could buy a mid-ranged desktop. The desktop would already have internet service that I wouldn't have to pay extra for, and I would laugh my butt off if I saw somebody surfing the internet on a desktop with a 4" monitor. The very basic computer would have much more storage and out-do the iPhone in every area worth thinking about.

Other reasons exist. Anybody even considering it already has a phone. Why buy this mystery thing for $500 when you can buy a blackberry which has better connectivity and more convenient features. Plus the fact that nobody knows anything about it, except that the screen adjusts to the position you hold it to. I'm sure it'll be all over this site tomorrow. Happy birthday to me! But the iPhone just seems too impractical for the price.

The people who do buy the iPhone will likely just put their old phone on eBay. So look out for cheap and lightly used chocolates and kRazrs and every other model of phone you could possibly want. The ESN change is free for Verizon and I'm sure it is for AT&T as well.

iPhone not!

by Tim Hillebrand - 6/28/07 12:03 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I cannot understand all the hyperbole about the iPhone. It's little more than an iPod that makes phone calls. Big deal. It certainly cannot be taken seriously as a productivity device. It's just an expensive toy for those who are either techno challenged or don't have any real need for a serious handheld computer. It lacks even the most rudimentary productivity tools. My advice is to save your money and invest it in a Windows Mobile device, which can do anything an iPhone can do and a whole lot more, and has been doing so for a long time now. If this over-hyped device is successful, it will be a sad comment on the expectations of the public mindset.

I have no need for an iPhone

by mabradle - 6/28/07 12:53 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am currently using a Nokia 6800 with a built-in qwerty keyboard as a phone and PDA. It does everything I need, is paid for and the battery lasts more than 3 days between charges. I am not willing to pay a premium for web access with my phone. If the price and subscription rates drop I may reconsider.

I read on the 1st page that you cant get handset insurance for this thing? so buy a 600 buck phone and carry it around in public and cant insure it? if thats true it sucks badly that alone would make me never ever in life get one, seriously its like buying the top of the line beamer and being told you cant cover it under your insurance, you wouldnt drive it would you? (well i wouldnt hahahahaha)

No, hype is not heaven

by spinella - 6/28/07 2:29 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Since I have fairly good sales resistance, and apply the following:
1)Shop around, 2)Wait, 3)Don't by; I have good confidence in my ability to skip the iphone. On the airplane, I noted there are several other products that offer the same blend already that have not been hyped. I also noted that it does not make wifi phone calls and it does not use 3g web services.
I do look forward to merging my palm (which of course does play mp3s and take SD cards) and my camera phone, but I will just have to wait until there is actually a product that does both well.
Still I do thank Apple for moving everyone along in the direction of ubiquitous wifi, cheap cell phone service, and a merged device.
But why didn't they call it iNewton?

Your off base

by MzSabina - 6/28/07 10:05 PM In reply to: No, hype is not heaven by spinella

1) I agree with you.... WAIT and definatly no line
2.) As far as shopping around goes, that won't do you any good in the near future. Apple if very strict on their control over the price of their products. They do offer discounts to students, but that is 10% and notl likely to be on the iPhone. Better of with an Apple ceritied refurbished. And refurbished doesn't necessaryly even mean used. If a product was sold, opened and then returned it goes back to Apple for testing and is than sold as refurbished with the same EXACT warranty as if it were brand new,

Where I don't agree with is this:
1.) The iPhone absolutely works on WiFi
2.) There is a Sim card. Just not as easily accesable (that is if you call pushing a paperclip or pin into a hole hard).
3. You and not have seen ny other phone on a plane that does the same think since the iPhone is the first one out there that works with a fulll blown browser, plus widgets. Real time weather, real time stock and even real time traffic conditions via Google Maps.

Now for merging your palm, that is a different story. That you will have to find out from Apple. But if there ease of switching from a PC to a Mac is any example, I wouldn't really worry about it. Condsidering it does it for you as long as you have a firewire port on your PC.

bugs? 3g

by eschaton - 6/28/07 2:49 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Can't justify buying an edge smartphone/pocket pc especially at that price. But the current 3g phones have qualcomm chips which apparently are much slower than the edge intel chips. I read an article that said that was why the iphone is edge. I want an iphone, and I want it 3g and intel. I think a lot will have to happen before that will happen, so I will wait. A Mac, on the other hand, is something I will purchase quite soon.

No iPhone

by Aimee H. - 6/28/07 3:39 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I was torn between "No" and "Never". I like new gadgets, but I'm not a technophile. I can see how it would be appealing to the younger set, just like any of these phones with cameras and video and music. For my lifestyle, it just isn't necessary. I have a Blackberry now, but that was more because I can't have a camera phone at work and we got a good deal on it. Like others have said, I don't want to be jacked into something all the time.

iWont

by vwdriver - 6/28/07 3:44 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

No way.
First off, it's with Cingular/AT&T. After 23 months of torturous "service" with my problematic Treo 650 (exchanged 6 times in the first 12 months), there's no way this iPhone using their service can be replied upon as a business tool for me. Not to mention AT&T has HOURS on their customer care (welcome to the 21st Century, people!) - and is closed all day Sunday.

Read the other postings to see all of the restrictions inherent in the iPhone and decide for yourself: do you need to be part of the hype?? If you drive a Hummer and simply have to have the latest flashy thing to show off to the world, then hop in line with all of the other people who are falling for this one.

Otherwise, there are much smarter Smartphones out there which won't tie you down so much.

...oh, and the coverage

by vwdriver - 6/28/07 3:54 PM In reply to: iWont by vwdriver

To comment on back_water_tech's remarks on coverage...

I AM in a metro area and STILL have horrible, inconsistent service with AT&T/Cingular. I'm in the Bay Area, where several million people live, and there's no excuse for the DAILY dropped calls, static on the line, voicemails without missed calls, and dozens of other malfunctions as a result of both the mediocre-at-best service and the lemon of a phone I own (Treo 650).

Every time I pass a billboard for AT&T that says, "Fewest dropped calls of any network" I get angry and laugh all at once, fighting the urge to climb up there and spraypaint an expletive diagonally across it.

I don't think so

by cyberthugmobile - 6/28/07 4:12 PM In reply to: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is a great device but it is targeted to a specific user type like all phones. You would have to be an advid ipod user for one. There's not enough memory if you are a hardcore ipod gunky. Mobile OSX is a feature that I like although I am a windows mobile 6 device user now it's nice to see something new hit the market. I think apple should of integrated all of these cool technologies into thier regular ipod player line up. I would have definitely purchased a unit like that ( a mac mobile PDA with built-in IPOD ). Price isn't even a factor with me but the mobile carrier is.
