Stereo for my Ipod Nano

by mdavis03 - 6/26/07 8:39 AM

I am looking for a stereo to hook my iPod Nano 8GB into it. I dont know if I should get one that is built for the iPod, like with the dock, remote control, etc... or just get a regular stereo and get the cables to connect the iPod to the stereo? Which would be cheaper? Is one option better thanthe other? Do you have any favorites taht I should look at.

I looked at the Home Accesories on CNET for the Ipod Nano and the ipod dock stereos they had were expensive.

It was 89 or 99 at the Apple store. They love it. Paired with their 30GB Video iPod it's been one of their favorite things since they didn't get a dock and charging was done from the laptop. This changed all that and gave their iPod a nice home.

How about this cable?

I was surfing on the Apple Store and I saw this cable to connect my iPod through the headphone jack to the audio ports on my stereo. I recognized the Monster brand.

There was also a Belkin but it said discontinued.

Avalable from Radio Shack

the mini plug to RCA (Left and Right) is a cheap cable.

Connect it to the Phone out port of your iPod and then to the Aux in of your stereo. Works well.

The iPod Dock does the same thing but takes the Line out route. The dock, which also charges the iPod, is connected to the stereo using the same connector as above

Do you mean this dock?

I was looking on Apples website and I saw this dock. Is this the Ipod Dock you mean? I would probably like this better than just a cable for the fact that the iPod is standing in it instead of sitting next to my stereo. Question though, does it come with that cable you mentioned? Does it charge while it is hooked to my stereo or only when I have it docked to my computer? Can I buy a remote so I can change the songs from my bed. I dont care if there is an onscreen list of songs as I play stuff through my Playlists anyway.

That's the one

We have the iPod Mini version, back a few years, and the Firewire A/C power adapter so that the iPod can charge and play through the stereo at the same time.
The Firewire cord has a regular Firewire connection on one end and an iPod connection at the other. The iPod connector attaches to the dock or directly to the iPod when it is outside of the dock.

As noted on the site, if you are using your computer to charge the iPod, it will not play at the same time.

There is a USB A/C power adapter that "may" fit this dock in the same manner as the earlier Firewire power adapter does.

If I buy the iPod Nano dock

And the Apple Remote

Will they work together? Does the dock come with the cable to connect to my stereo?

So the nano isnt just a small universal dock?

Would my nano fit the universal dock?

So whats the difference?

by mdavis03 - 6/27/07 9:17 AM In reply to: NO! Wrong combination by mrmacfixit Moderator

I looked at the universal dock and it says that it is compatible with my 8gb 2nd Gen nano.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C04E07A&nplm=MA045G/C

So I am assuming that means I will be able to connect my iPod Nano 8GB 2nd gen to it and plug it into my stereo system? And if I get a remote, the remote will work as well? Is there any on screen guide?

My information source

by mrmacfixit Moderator - 6/27/07 12:06 PM In reply to: So whats the difference? by mdavis03

is exactly the same information source as yours. In fact, you are supplying the links that I go look at.

I believe the info on the UD states that you can connect it to your stereo or your TV.

The Nano screen may reflect what the remote is telling it, but I don't know.

If you are in a position to read the print on the Nano screen, you would not need the remote!

True Compatibility

by mdavis03 - 6/27/07 12:09 PM In reply to: My information source by mrmacfixit Moderator

Sorry about that, its just that its a little daunting trying to find a good set of ipod accessories while trying to wade through all the crap.

I was reading in the comments of the Ipod Remote that the remotes MENU button isnt compatible with all iPod Models. The remotes page says that its compatible with the 2nd Gen Ipod Nano, but people in the comments still said the menu button the remote doesnt work. Is this true? Is it "truely" compatible with my ipod Nano 2nd gen 8gb?

A rhetorical question,

one hopes.

Try calling 1-800-692-7753

They will give you all the information you need and you can also find out if you can return it if the MENU button does not work with your iPod

Another option to the monopoly that is Apple

by mdavis03 - 6/28/07 6:15 AM In reply to: A rhetorical question, by mrmacfixit Moderator

http://us.kensington.com/html/10117.html

I was looking at iLounge.com and they listed this dock from Kensington. I looked on CNet and they said it was pretty good.

I wonder if this would be better than the iPod dock, remote. Even though the Kensington one is a hundre bucks, I wonder if by the time I buy the Apple Ipod Universal dock, remote, and cables if it wouldnt be close to a hundred dollars.

CNETs review

by mdavis03 - 6/28/07 12:50 PM In reply to: Another option to the monopoly that is Apple by mdavis03

I was looking at the review CNET had for that Kensington dock.
http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-player-accessories/kensington-entertainment-dock-500/4505-6519_7-31631868.html?tag=uolst

I had a question about part of the review though, I am not sure I am understanding it correctly.

"We were impressed by the remote's ability to take control of our iPod; most of the third-party iPod-dock remotes we've seen only pause the music or video, skip tracks, and adjust the volume, not browse the menus. That said, the Entertainment Dock still isn't perfect. When you navigate the menus, your TV screen will be blank, so you must rely on the iPod's screen for your visual cues. Our other gripe is that the remote seems cheaply designed: The buttons on our review model looked misaligned (if usable), while the battery cover was annoyingly difficult to pry open. We got about 30 feet of range from the remote, which is more than adequate for most living rooms."

So this means that even though the remote can navigate the menus on the iPod, you wont be able to see what you are doing unless you go to the screen of your iPod?
