can't decide on mp3 player!

by lordacro - 6/22/07 3:45 PM

Okay, I have an old black and white screened 30gig creative nomad and I'm tradin' up...

I want a 30 gig or more device under $300, preferably closer to $200. It's got to have internal FM and video functions (so no iPod).

I have a 2000 song collection of unprotected mp3 files (with a few wma and aac here or there, thanks a lot stupid itunes). I also want to be able to put movies or TV shows on it (almost all avi, some divx)

Is there a way to sync a video podcast on say, a Zune or a Vision:M? How are the software packages that come with those? I am sick of iTunes screwing with my audio formats!

Stupid? How?

(with a few wma and aac here or there, thanks a lot stupid itunes)

If these were purchased tracks, Apple made no secret of them being protected AAC, your fault.
If these were purchased tracks and you have not figured out how to remove the DRM, your fault.
If these are ripped CD's into iTunes, you set, or didn't change, the preferences to/from AAC, your fault.

Make sure your new player can handle MPG4 and all your AAC files will play.

They were CDs ripped to wma format a while ago. It seems like everything but iTunes plays them, but the program made me convert to aac. I'd love to dump it altogether but I like having access to npr podcasts, so I might as well have my media there too.

I hope it's really worth it to troll forums and whine at people who suggest that any apple related product might be imperfect in some way. You completely failed to answer my question, your fault.

Does anyone have a real response to my original post?

I'm in the same boat...

I got a Zune from staples for 189.99 and a zen vision from Dell for 189.99 From what i've read online, the Zen seems to have better performance but the dongle thing is a big drawback and the Zune not being backward compatiable for my old mp3 files is an issue. The Zen does have a record from the fm radio which the Zune does not. As you know the Zune does have issues with drm but you can hack that out of files. Overall, i'm looking for someone to suggest one way or the other. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just curious

as to why you thought iTunes was stupid.

I have no problem with you declaring such but, in this case, it appears that you missed the iTunes conversion function that would convert AAC to MP3.

Any decent player will play AAC (MP4) files, including the Zune, so conversion would not be necessary.

Itunes gives you the choice of what format to convert WMA to and does not change Audio formats unless it has been set to do so. Settings are in iTunes Preferences.

Good luck in your search.

I suppose my views were due to my ordeal with using a program that refuses to support wma and converts my files to the aac format, which my current mp3 player will not take. iTunes did not mention having a choice of formats (I foolishly assumed it would do mp3) when it told me I had to convert my songs for placement in the library.

I like the Zens better as well. The Zune's screen is definitely nice but I've heard lots of good reviews for the former.

iTunes does do mp3s

by ktreb - 6/23/07 11:12 AM In reply to: Re: by lordacro

I set my preferences for cd ripping into mp3s rather than aac. (edit/preferences/advanced.....) but of course that doesn't help you in your current predicament. You could convert those into mp3s using iTunes (right click on song, select "convert selection to mp3). Do you still have those wma files? iTunes doesn't delete the original file, so you should still have them unless you did delete them manually.

If you're really into a nice screen, I would suggest the Zen Vision M, or the W if you like wide screens. (I'm looking at the upcoming Archos 5th generation) The Zune, although bigger, is really no better than the iPod. If you don't like the closed environment of iTunes/iPod, then you should also stay away from the Zune as well.

Well i would recommend that you get the zen vision w. not the vision m. The vision w is way better and now if you buy at fry's you get a 50 dollars rebate. I got mine and it rocks. It has FM radio and video. It plays divx and all of that jazz. If i were you i would get the zen, the zune is just too simple , besides they are in their first models and they still need some work rebuilding the next zune. So by far the zen is the best in the market

Buy a MS Zune

by browninggold - 6/24/07 10:52 AM In reply to: can't decide on mp3 player! by lordacro

$199.00 @ Circuit City Best Buy will match the price. 7500 songs, 25000 photos, and video playback...sounds awesome. Everyone in our family owns one. If you want a excellent speaker for the Zune check out VAF Research. Its awesome

I would go Archos

by cjohnbrown - 6/25/07 12:09 PM In reply to: can't decide on mp3 player! by lordacro

I am a current Archos user and the Archos covers all you need and does not have any of the problems you have mentioned. I would look into the new 5th Generation of Archos, which is what I am waiting for which should be out in Early September. Archos.com only shows the 605 but they have 5 models coming out and I am sure one if not most of them will suit your needs. I would check out Archosfans.com and if the archos is not for you check out the creative zen m and possibly the cowon line they are ok but I would still suggest archos.
