Computer help: Vista upgrade
Vista upgrade
by genej313 - 6/20/07 8:52 PMI just got the Vista upgrade for an HP Pavilion I bought in early January. I use Firefox, Zone Alarm Pro, Nod, JV PowerTools, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. I am relatively satisfied with the system performance under XP Media Center 2005. Is there any real reason to upgrade to Vista? Will any of what I use now no longer work? Has Vista got the bugs out, I mean? Any advice is helpful.

Eye candy that requires some pretty significant graphics processing power and memory, and still doesn't even do as good a job as what Apple has done with OS X for years with significantly less powerful hardware.
If you're happy with what you've got now, don't bother with the upgrade. Only if there are some specific features of Vista you're interested in, and those features are worth the upgrade price to you, would I recommend even considering it.

When I tried to order the upgrade, HP had farmed it out to Indonesia somewhere, where they had just had an earthquake. Had to enter everything twice. Then they gave a printed set of instructions to verify everything and said they'd mail them to me. When I got the mailed ones, they were different. Physically impossible to do both. So I asked about that. Got a very warmed over letter thanking me for my support and no help. HP was next, they didn't care, just referred me back to the same place that gave me the contradictory instructions. So I never did anything. They sent me three sets of warnings that 5/31 was the latest day to submit. I still did nothing, I sort of figured, from what I had heard, that getting drivers and such would be tricky and my system works just fine. So on 5/31, they mailed me the upgrade anyway, even though I had never faxed or mailed them the various proofs they insisted on getting, in two different formats. :^). None of this gave me much confidence in the disks themselves. And I haven't heard anyone but newsletter writers raving about Vista. They write about it because it is their job. No businesses that I know of have moved, the place I work is staying with XP. So I thought, before I jumped in, I'd ask a few real people. Like you guys here. I had a blaze of a time when I upgraded to Win98, it was a full year before everything finally worked, countless reinstallations. All because of a glitch in their original code which I did not find myself until the third or fourth install. Microsoft takes its time doing things, but that does not guarantee they do them well. Especially in new incarnations. I figure by the time XP support dies off, I'll buy a new machine anyway. So thanks to all for your advice. I'll go with that and make bookends of the disc's, lol. :^) gene

Ad-Aware is not currently supported.. Spybot Search & Destroy is supported ONLY when the user has admin rights.. ZoneAlarm Pro requires the newest version for Vista support and many of the bugs haven't been worked out yet. JV Power Tools require full admin rights as well.
And if you're using a printer, you may or may not be able to find updated driver software for the printer.

Adaware 1.06r personal works fine for Vista. New 2007 version will be at end of August

"Ad-Aware SE Personal is not currently supported" whether or not your's works fine. Quite a few others have had problems. Users should use it at their own risk.:

According to Lavasoft, Ad-Aware 2007 won't support Vista till "Fall". (We're hearing anywhere between the end of August to October, but who knows till it's done.)

Spybot S&D won't have issues UNLESS you try to run it as a non-admin user...

Never mind CNet hawking the "wonders" of Vista. Read some expert's opinions on Vista and why you shouldn't switch to it.
Google it (or use whatever search engine you like) and read what a joke Vista is.
